Am looking for any information regarding an Agnes Robertson, born 14/4/1884 somewhere in Scotland. She died 10/12/1969 in Ruislip, Hillingdon. She married my great uncle George Sturrock, although I don't know when. He was a Director of Public Works in the Straits Settlements in the 1930s (now Singapore & Malaysia). I cannot find either a birth or marriage record. All info comes from her death record and the informant was her son George Munro Sturrock.
Any help would be much appreciated.
-
Was she married previously and is Robertson her maiden name?
-
According to the death record, her maiden name was Robertson. The actual name entered on the certificate is Agnes Robertson Sturrock. At first I assumed Robertson was her middle name, but apparantly not...
-
When and where was George munro Sturrock born?
-
Born 9/6/1912 in Serebam in the Malay States. Died 19/5/1991 Stanmore, Harrow.
-
So George would not be Agnes' son if she married in the 1930s
He may not have known if she was married previously
-
Oops! No! I think I misworded that in my initial post - the 1930s relates to when my great uncle was a Director of Public Works out in the Straits Settlements not when they got married. I have no idea when they got married. There does seem to have been a daughter also - Helen Beatrice Sturrock, but I have no idea when or where she was born but according to some passenger records it might have been between 1909 and 1912 approx. (Beatrice seems to run in the family...)
Sorry about the misunderstanding!
-
Do you know where and when George Sturrock was born?
-
Just adding the link to a previous post on George Sturrock for background www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,500365.0.html

Bermudagirl, nothing to do with who was Agnes Robertson. Have you come across this link? http://janus.lib.cam.ac.uk/db/node.xsp?id=EAD%2FGBR%2F0115%2FBAM%202 Looks like a photo of George on file from 1933.

Yes I had already spotted that! Haven't applied for a copy of the photo yet, although have found out about how to apply for it.
Getting confused with my Georges here!
George Sturrock born 1/12/1880 Edinburgh. Died 7/1/1950 Richmond Surrey
George Munro Sturrock born 9/6/1912 Serebam, Malay States (presumably where his father was working). Died 19/5/1991 Stanmore Harrow
-
Is this George in 1881
George M Sturrock 52
Marg Forbes Or Sturrock 37
George Forbes Or Sturrock 4 MO
Address: 7 Claremont Pl
-
Yes, my great grandparents - George Monro Sturrock born 9/1/1849 Blairgowrie and Margaret Forbes born 16/4/1843 Kilmadock. George was the eldest of their children. My grandmother was 2nd youngest!
-
Does Agnes' death record mention parents names?
-
It's an English death entry Sancti, so there won't have been details mentioned on her parents unfortunately.

Going to be tricky finding her.
No sign of a marriage in Scotland and George is still on the 1901 census so I wonder when he emigrated
-
Well he was back and forward between the Far East and Great Britain a number of times (by ship obviously), but I don't know where he met Agnes. I don't have a birth record for his son or daughter either.
-
Possible marriage for his brother
I wonder if George was a witness
1914 STURROCK WILLIAM GEORGE and JAMIESON AGNES HIGGINS P at SCOTSTOUN AND YOKER GLASGOW CITY/LANARK
-
Well his brother was Wiliam Young Sturrock and at some point emigrated to Canada (like 2 of his brothers). I forgot I had his RIBA statement, and according to that, he worked for the Caledonian Railway 1902-3 but by 1907 he was out in the Far East. I couldn't find a marriage for him in England either...
-
Possibly a related marriage
1904 GREEN PETER and STURROCK HELEN BEATRICE at ST ANDREW (EDINBURGH) EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN
And possible for his sister
1920 GRAY JAMES EDWARDS and STURROCK PATRICIA BEATRI at CRAMOND EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN
-
Now the Helen Beatrice Sturrock one could be interesting as it is a very similar name to one of the children of George. The other one is the marriage of my grandparents.

The Scotsman - Tuesday, 11th May 1909, page 12
STURROCK—ROBERTSON.—At Penang, on the 10th inst., GEOEGE STURROCK, A.M.Inst.C.E.. Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan. Federated Malay States, eldest son of the late George Monro Sturrock and of Mrs Sturrock, Blairmount, Blackhall.
Mid-Lothian to AGNES ROBERTSON. eldest daughter or James Robertson and Mrs Robertson, 12 Argyle Street , Maryfield, Dundee .
There are also some passenger lists on Ancestry and Findmypast in the 1920's for Agnes giving as UK address; Inglemere, Pitkerro Road, Dundee. Searching that address in Ancestry returns a James Robertson there from about 1922 to 1935.
One later passenger list has what looks like Agnes and George travelling home with a Helen B Sturrock aged 21 in 1932 , ( here the UK address is Walker St. Edinburgh ) .
Old Newspapers for Singapore ( but also covering what is now Malaysia ) can be freely searched at http://newspapers.nl.sg/Default.aspx . There are various mentions of George Sturrock there , and also the wedding of an Alice May Robertson , daughter of James Robertson of Inglemere , Pitkerro Road , to W L Forwell of Serembam.
So armed with this info , your Agnes is possibly enumerated in the 1901 census at Brachead (Braehead?) cottage , Mains in 1901 with parents James and Helen and a younger sister called Alice M. She was aged 16 and her birthplace was Dundee.
I will see if I can find some more info.
Hope this helps

Oh Sally, thank you so much! it never occurred to me to search the Scotsman! That helps me so much! Now I can trace Agnes! It's strange how things go round in circles because Dundee was where I was born as well! Yes, I have tracked them down on various passenger lists but hadn't found a marriage for George and Agnes. Can't find a birth for Helen (possibly abroad like her brother) and can't find a death record for her either...but never mind, what a help you have been! Thank you again! :)

Wow, Sally! That is hugely helpful :)

Oh thanks, but it was fun and cost me nuffin....
2 more entries from the Scotsman - verifies that her mother was a Helen , so hopefully the 1901 family is correct. But you have both parent's names , so it doesn't matter if iit isn't I think.

Thanks for all these! I'm struggling to find the marriage of Alice in the Singapore newspapers at the moment! Plenty of reports regarding a James Robertson, but I can't find her marriage. And the marriage of my great uncle George - that's great because from one of the passenger lists (I think) I have his wife as being Leslie Louisa Cartwright Wood. But he was married at least twice, because the informant when he died was his wife Audrey Mary. I think a lot more investigating is in order!
Thanks again for so much help!

Well, have just done a search in the 1891 and 1901 census - it seems to have been a family of daughters! - at least 5!!!
-
Sorry my post missed a rather important bit out of the Sturrock-Wood marriage above - Should have said :
STURROCK—WOOD.—At Bombay, on the 27th of July. GEORGE MUNRO STURROCK. of the Scottish Assam Tea Company, Kharikatia, Assam, son of the Hon. Mr George Sturrock. Director-Adviser , Public Works, Malaya, and Mrs Sturrock , Sydenham, Singapore, and grandson of Mr and Mrs James Robertson, Inglemere, Dundee , to LESLIE LOUISA CARTWRIGHT, daughter of the late WILLIAM H. WEST WOOD, of Palmerston Place, Edinburgh.
Oops !
Sally

Thanks for that! Can you tell me how you could Alice May in the Singapore newspapers - I'm having a struggle...oh ignore this! Have just found it by searching under "Forwell"!!!
