Post by: Ewan on Saturday 29 January 11 10:58 GMT (UK)
Does anyone know the occupation of this young lady please?

The first and sixth one looks to be the same.

Thank you for help.

With a one of the entries being  a mariner one  wonders whether the dress makers were actually members of the oldest profession who frequently described themselves as dress makers in a census.

That is a gross libel on all sailors and on all dress makers.

Having both mariners and dress makers in my family, I am bound to agree with Scouseboy!

The sixth occupation isn't servant, I don't think, it's scholar.
Red post  Snap, Rafter! and as regards the unknown word, it's "seas" written in in a differnt hand.

Thanks everyone, dress maker it says then!

Just to clarify as well, the 2 mariners are heads of the 2 famiies and the 3 dress makers are their daughters.

Thanks for identifying the occupation

Sorry I should have been a little more explicit.  Working from so little detail I was concluding that the presence of a mariner made it likely that the census item was for a seaport where ladies of the night are found more frequently.  If they were daughters within families then I agree that this was extremely unlikely.  However my original statement that not all dressmakers were just that, should stand, particularly if they were fairly young and not living within families.
