Hi, I have a puzzle I would like some assistance with pse. I will try and keep this as brief as poss. w/out losing the thread.
My ggrandfather was a John Grogan Murphy and he was born in Dublin. He married a Rose Armstrong from Fintona in 1875, in Liverpool.
On his marriage certificate it gives his age as 28yrs.
His father's name is shown as Barry Murphy, a 'clerk in the Registration Office Four Courts, Dublin'.
John Grogan Murphy's marriage to Rose was confirmed by family,
The Parish records for St. Andrews RC parish give John Grogan Murphy's dob as 1838 in Dublin. His father is listed as Barry William Grogan Murphy.
Street Directories reveal that a Barry Murphy is listed as a law agent/scrivener at 28 Dawson Street (this appears to be an office) and another address at Chancery Place.
I feel that both bits of info therefore match. However, The age on the marriage certificate does not tally with the date in the parish register. It is out by almost 10 yrs.
Q.Is it likely that I am looking at a second JG Murphy because the first one died?Or is there another explanation?
Q. Where is the nearest RC church to Chancery Place?
Q.Assuming that Barry William died in Dublin as was still living in Chancery place where would he and his wife Anne (nee Rooan) have been buried?
Finally, Q. Are there any census returns for Dublin that cover the time period 1830 to 1850?

I'm not sure the two occupations you mentioned correspond - clerk in the Registration Office Four Courts and law agent/scrivener
The Four Courts is located on the North Quays
28 Dawson Street is south city.
Chancery Place is beside the Four courts and the nearest RC church would be St. Pauls, Arran quay.
The only surviving census details for the timeframe you mentioned is an extract from the 1851 census. This just covers the city area and only shows head of household and address - no other details. It's available on Origins Net

Hi Shane, thanks. I'll start from there. With a Christian name of Barry I was hopingthat it may have been a little easier to find a connection. I am stil bemused about the gap in ages between the baptism recorded date(where a witness was a John Grogan) and the age o0n the marriage cert. which is 9 yrs out. Regards, Pauline

Hi Shane, I thought Four Courts was where the Courts of Chancery and Common Ples and the like were until the late 1800s? In which case the scrivener connection is feasible,. Pauline

People didn't (and don't ! ) always give their correct age when marrying - especially if the other half was a lot younger or a lot older.

the Law agent having an office beside the courts fits... it's the other occupation that I think doesn't match - i.e. the 'clerk in the Registration Office Four Courts'
It's worth noting that a 'clerk in the Registration Office Four Courts' would almost certainly not be listed in a directory, but someone running a business could be.
remember that Murphy is the most common surname in Ireland, so there could be a number of Barry Murphys working in and around the Four Courts. Someone with the Grogan middle name though would narrow things down...
What year is that Dawson street directory entry ?

Hi Shane, sorry I havent got back before I have been looking at the Dircetories on Origins. The problem is the images are so small it is difficult to read them.

The entries appear to be quite extensive in that it is not just the bigger players who are listed. Have you got access tobetter images than Origins? Pauline
