Title: James KANNANE - South Australia
Post by: Rochdalian on Thursday 27 January 11 09:21 GMT (UK)
Hi

Have this chap James Kannane, all we know is what we've found on his WW1 service record and the AIF Project.

His next of kin is given as his mother Jane Kannane of Walkerville

When he enlisted in 1914 he gave his age as 36 but in 1917 when he was trying for a discharge he gave it as 46.

He died in 1926 and is buried at Port Wakefield.

Also a Mrs Eleanor Johnstone of Maylands SA wrote to the army looking for an address to write to claiming she was a relative (possible sister?)

Anyway we would be grateful for anything about this man and his family.

Cheers

Possibly his sister (Mrs Eleanor Johnstone) who was making the enquiries into his whereabouts:

KANANE Patrick James b. 1 Apr 1877
Birth Place: North Adelaide
District Code: Ade; Symbol: A; Book: 180/Page: 120
Father: Patrick KANANE
Mother: Jane NOACK

It appears on his birth reg that his mothers maiden name has been recorded incorrectly as his siblings births show it as ROACH as does her marriage below.

Hi and thank you all so much.

We'd like to take this a little further if we may.  Could someone please look up to see if James, b1866, died young.  You see we are still struggling with the age of our main subject James who died in Port Wakefield in 1926.  We think he is most likely the Patrick James, b1877, as the age seems to fit with the age given at death, 49 yrs.  If it is him then for some reason he dropped the Patrick when he joined up in 1914.

Secondly is there any chance of finding when Jane Roach, or her parents came to SA please.

Thanks

I do not believe this was Mrs Eleanor JOHNSTONE

Ellen Gertrude KANNANE died unmarried in 1919

2nd marriage

HARRIS Leonard Francis 41 widow father Richard William Francis HARRIS = JOHNSTONE Eleanor Bertha 43 widow father James HALLIDAY 11 Aug 1923 Res of Mr Measday Mitcham Dist Ade 296 382

No Births to this Eleanor in SA

Hi Kris

Just a quick one to say thanks before we go out for dinner.

I think Jane who came with her brothers is the one who married Patrick Kinane.  The age fits with her calculated age from her death.

The Eleanor Johnstone thing is interesting in that her maiden name was Halliday and we have a Halliday on the Baker side of this complecated family.

More later and thanks

Hi Kris

We had a look at the passenger list for the OMEGA and found Jane Roach and her brothers thanks.  The brothers were James, Thomas & Patrick - I couldn't see where you got two Thomases? ???

And with Ellen Gertrude dying unmarried thanks for confirming that, we thought it was the case :)

Now then the Hallidays, we have an Eliza Halliday who arrived with her husband Job Baker in 1838 per EDEN, they came from Stroud, Gloucestershire.  Just wondering if a brother of Eliza also came out to SA.  Noticed on Barry Leadbeater's passenger lists that a number of Hallidays came out and one that caught the eye was a Debney family which included a J Halliday.  Now a James Halliday married a daughter of this family Hepzabah Debney.  Reason we are trying to connect is that Eleanor Johnstone (Halliday) claimed to be a relation of James Kannane.

Is it possible to trace back from Eleanor's father, James Halliday, to see if there is a connection? ;)

We are just fishing here and even if Eleanor turns out to be descended from a brother of Eliza then the relationship is very tenuous eh!  Perhaps it was another kind of relationship ;)

Thanks SASHAR for your info also.  It throws up a question, you list four female children to Patrick Kinnane & Jane Roach but only two show up on the list that MERLIN sent.  Is it just that BISA has it wrong do you think?

Thanks

Helen & Bob

Hi Helen and Bob,

Quote

was wondering the same thing myself. Often women could not get answers if they were not related.

Eleanor Bertha HALLIDAY was born 26 Apr 1880 at Marden Dist Ade 240 1 parents James HALLIDAY and Sarah Ann CASTLE

HALLIDAY James 33 Widow father James HALLIDAY = CASTLE Sarah Jane 20 single father William CASTLE 12 Dec 1878 Res of brides father Crafers Dist Ade 117/959

Children Frederick Castle, Lillian Adelaide Elis, Beatrice Louise, Elise Maude, Ruby Amelia, Olive Amelia, Mabel Ellis Squires, Ruby Ethel Maude, Leonard Stanley

possible first marriage (although nothing further visible (births/death)

HALLIDAY James 28 singe father James HALLIDAY = SHIPTON Louisa 24 single father George SHIPTON 1 Oct 1874 Trinity Church Adelaide Dist Ade 101/17

I see James and Hepzabar had a son Albert James in 1846 but this isn't him. I don't see a birth for James

The second Thomas had arrived with John who died in 1864. (arrived 1857 aboard DAVID McIVER Seemed a likely for the father unless this Thomas returned to UK and came back with rest of family.

Cheers Kris  :)

Hi Kris

Seems the Halliday connection may be a dead duck for now eh, but thanks anyway.

So, with the Roach family I suppose it is possible that the family that arrived per David McIvor were the parents and siblings of Jane & her three brothers per Omega, except for the Thomas conundrum.  Just did a little googling and it appears that ROACH was a fairly common name in Clare.  Taking into account the Thomas problem there is the possiblility that John & Mary where not the parents of Jane and the boys but uncle and aunt - no, just remembered that Jane, at her wedding, says that John Roach is her father-drat!

What do you think? ???

Hi

Been mulling over this Roach family with two Thomas' and decided to search Trove for the passenger lists in the SA papers.  In respect to the 'David McIver' on which John & Mary plus two kids Thomas & Joanna arrived in 1859, according to the Ships List.  I can find no mention of a Thomas Roach in either of the SA papers of the day.

The SA Register of 29/11/1859 lists John & Mary Roach then a few lines further down has  Johanna Roache.

In the SA Advertiser of 29/11/1859 it lists John & Mary Roach then two lines further has Joanna. Roach.

Neither paper lists in family, single men, single women order.

I am not suggesting that either list is at fault I am just a little confused.  Mind you it would make much more sense if there was only one Thomas travelling ie. Jane and three older brothers came out first and sent for mum and dad and little sister.

I would like comment please if anyone feels like it ;D

Cheers

Hi Bob and Helen,

State Archives list Thomas on both voyages. I have it on my list to check when next at the library. Unfortunately the information on The Ships List is probably all there is but I will take a look at the original manifests.

Hi Bob and Helen,

Nothing of further interest in the passenger lists I am afraid. There is a Thomas listed on both voyages. All were from Clare

They do appear to be family groups in both instances - One List has

Thomas from Clare Farm Servany
Mary and John bracketed Wife and Lab
Johanna 16 Dom Serv

Cheers Kris  :)

Hi Helen & Bob,  Jane Roach was the sister of my great grandfather James Roach. Along with brothers Patrick and Thomas they arrived in Adelaide on board the Omega in 1857. As you know Jane married Patrick Kinnane/Kannane. They are buried together in Eastern Catholic Section of the West Terrace Cemetery in Adelaide. James Roach married Catherine Lyons; their son James was my grandfather. My grandfather married Emma Alice Hood in 1891. They had four children, Alfred James (my father), John Stanley, Thomas William and Minnie May Roach. As far as I can ascertain Jane Roach's brother Patrick moved to Burra and married and had a family there, but Thomas remained unmarried till his death and is buried with his mother Bridget in Eastern Catholic Section of West Terrace Cemetery. I am yet to establish the father's name.
Regards, Alex Roach.

Hi Alex
Just came across your post.  I thought this thread had died but you have now brought it to life and I will now re-read it and see where to go from here.
Do you have any birth marriage and death dates, or anything for that matter, for Jane and her brothers.  On Jane's marriage to Patrick Kinnane in 1860 her father is named as John Roach.

Cheers

HI there everyone

I am on ancestry.com.au DUCKWORTH FAMILY TREE
Trying to find Jane, James, Thomas and Patrick Roach's parents. The siblings arrived in 1857 on the "Omega". John Roach is their father.

Is Alex Roach who wrote some of the above posts still active? He says that Thomas is buried with his mother Bridget in West Terrace Cemetery. When did she arrive in Australia? What was her surname?
Any ideas ROACH descendants.
