Title: Caroline snookes
Post by: mr pinkwhistle on Wednesday 26 January 11 19:22 GMT (UK)
I am trying to find a Caroline Snookes who was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire in 1860 and who was the daughter of George snookes and Harriet Fowler. At aged 11 she is in Sheffield but not living with her parents. In fact she is living with a foster family called Bird. After this she completely disappears and I cannot find her. There were rumours that she possibly went to Canada but as yet I have not been able to find any proof of this. Can anyone help?

It might be useful to get the certificate for the Caroline BIRD marriage and check things like age and parents names.  That one does sound like a good bet to me.

Can you check workhouse records for the area and see if she ended up in the children's part of that at any point?   I think records are variable depending on the area, but I know I got a lot of info from London Metropolitan Archives for my relatives in the Edmonton Union Workhouse (including dates and circumstances of children entering and leaving the workhouse school), so its possible that records are available in Sheffield that could help you.

Might also be worth checking child migration websites (like British Home Children).  I'm not sure what years children were sent to Canada, but if the timing of it fits with her age, then you might be able to find records for that.

1871 Caroline Snookes is listed as "adopted daughter" -assuming that is to head of house - then she is the "adopted" daughter of Henry Bradshaw
I'll post the census

Hi, spotted your entry and it immediately grabbed my attention. My ggg father was Henry Bradshaw and I always wondered who this girl was living with him as the only census entry was very hard to read and i was unsure of the surename. I see you say she was a daughter of Harriet Fowler who I assume is a sister of William Fowler who married Ellen Bradshaw (both of went to the US in 1865). Her sister Fanny Bradshaw was later Fanny Bird you listed but they are all living with Henry Bradshaw at the time shown. I always wondered who this girl was and how she came to be with my family and what happened to her so you have part answered my question. Maybe you can email me if you have a family connection to the Bradshaw line or have found an answer to your question?
Regards
Jon

Hi, think from the Free BMD she married a
PARKINSON  John  or WALDRON  William so on the 1891 census this could be them

William Waldrem age 39 (transcription or recording error shown in Ancestry?)
Carloline Waldrem age 30
Louisa age 9

You need to get the marriage cert I listed to see if its the right caroline and husband then you can check the census again for 1891, 1901, 1911 to track their whereabouts. Come back to me later if you need any census lookup.

Hi I have checked Caroline living with William Waldrem but in 1901 william is living in somerset classed as a widower. This is the conundrum. There is a Caroline Crowder living with joseph crowder with a daughter louisa in 1901 in Sheffield. There is no marriage record, no birth records for most of the children and Louisa is definetly alive because in 1914 she marries  a Haggarty. This is where it gets very interesting as Joseph Crowder was Carolines step brother and Louisas birth date is right and so is Josephs birth date and I cannot work this one out so I would be glad of any help to solve it!It is all very odd!
