Has anyone in the area of Bradford any idea where or what TYRELS is or was.
Found TURLS on an old map but nothing else comes up except a street name in central Bradford.
Census return for 1841 has Tyrels as a place of residence.
John Field born 1814 family of possible weavers known to be in Queensbury area .

I can't find Tyrels either, even in Genuki. However, in the latter I did find Tyresall in the parish of Calverley which is 3 miles north of Bradford. Therer is also a place of the same name in the parish of Darton near Barnsley.

So I 'd hazard a guess that the enumerator either misheard or miss spelled -
How far do you think a man might have moved if he took up a weaving apprenticship at the beginning of the 19th C
I think I need to research this further. The chap I have looking for this family has rather fixed ideas about how much , or otherwise, people moved around. He thinks they stayed put! I dont and I have done research on the wool trade, but that was for Devon.
Thanks for the help

There is a street in Bradford, near the City Hall, called The Tyrls, another one nearby is called Tyrell Street. The Tyrls (or Turls) and Tyrell Street were both there in 1800. Many streets in central Bradford were residential or had residential properties alongside commercial ones at that time.
I had a quick look but I couldn't see a John Field b 1814 living in Queensbury in 1841. There was one living in Thornton and one in central Bradford (remember the ages are rounded down).

To confirm Dave's findings.
John Field @25 Labourer Church Hill.
John Field @27 Woolcomber Thornton
(Corrected original post as shown name Fielding.)

John Fielding @25 Labourer Church Hill.
John Fielding @27 Woolcomber Thornton
I'm sure Brian meant Field as I found, and not Fielding

Sorry about that!
Will correct post to read name Field.

Thanks Brian & Dave - My chap is insistant that his ancestors were in Queensbury probably at Sandbeds . The John Fields in 1841 census had the address Tyrels- Queensbury - and I found Tyrels Street, Queensbury in central Braford but nothing else.
I wondered if Tyrels was a small parish or a manor or maybe a someone with a weaving loft , a Master Weaver maybe but have so far found nothing.
Since Queensbury is some way out of Bradford that irritated him and puzzled me!
Thanks for you work.
Do You know any links sources of information about weavers , apprenticships to or Master weavers that we can look at? I found one very comprehensive on that I will show him but is there a genealogicaly biased one??
I see that FindMyPast has now got a whole load more parish records up for Yorkshire so maybe that will prove fruitful!

I think I remember reading that Sandbeds was built to house the workers of John Fosters mill which is just over the road. Sandbeds is at the Bradford side of Queensbury as opposed to Halifax at the other side, but as your friend says, Sandbeds must be 10 miles or so from 'central' Bradford. Have another look at the 1841 census and see what the surrounding streets were called.
Where were the family in subsequent census's ?
Perhaps your Tyrels was the name of a block of houses given the name of a builder or perhaps an overseer at the mill ??

Ive done it myself on occasion through FreeCen and the 1881 in IGI However it doesnt come up on Free Census so if you have the CD I'd be most interested to see what you can find.
I think they remained in Bradford area - Id have to check and I dont see him until History Club in Wednesday
Thanks Dave

Annie,
I'm not quite sure what you mean here, have you seen the 1841 census with John on it ? or was it someone else who saw it ? My information was found on a web site not a CD

Sorry I misunderstood about looking in the census, I thought you had a CD.
It was John Field - in FindMyPast we put in John Field -Bradford and got sheets of them. We pulled out the most likely looking ones and are going through them.
We know his father was Samuel and he found a samuel last week that he is looking at.
I just wondered about Tyrels and we couldnt find it on a map and wondered if local knowledge might throw up something.
Lots of garden paths to wander up on genealogy!

As a retired policeman I can confirm that 'The Tyrls' was the name we used to refer to the police headquarters in Bradford, in the centre opposite the Odeon cinema. Not to be confused with 'The Bridewell' which was the term we used for the charge office and cell area there. I'm not sure whether 'The Tyrls' related to the building or to the area where it stood.
