Title: Lancashire Asylums
Post by: kimberleyallen on Tuesday 25 January 11 17:05 GMT (UK)
I wonder if anyone can help me.  I am trying to find some more information on mental hospitals in the Rochdale area in order to trace my Great Grandmother Alice Close, nee Brearley.  Last seen on the 1911 census in Rochdale when her two children were quite small.  My grandmother used to say that she never knew her mother and the family moved to Lytham St. Annes, earliest records I can find is 1927.  The feeling is that she was an alcoholic and was sent to an asylum / institution.  I cannot find any death record for her.  Can anyone tell me if there is a particular hospital she would have been sent to when living in Rochdale.  Also were there any private institutions?  The family were quite wealthy.  Any help greatly appreciated.  :)

Would Prestwich be too far away from Rochdale?

Could she possibly have been sent to Prestwich? Also were there any private institutions?  The family were quite wealthy.  Any help greatly appreciated.

Near Bury, to the north of Manchester.

Well possibly then. I've just had a quick search but can't find her name amongst those that were buried at St. Mary's.  Does anyone know of a complete index anywhere?

As Prestwich is no more than 8 miles from Rochdale, there could a good chance she was there. i only have records for Prestwich Asylum Admissions 1851 - 1901. You may be lucky and Greater Manchester county records have her listed as they have later records i think. Some times if your lucky you will even get a photo of the person.
I would either phone or email them and ask, the do a 15 min free search for you.

Try this Click for burials at ST.Mary's 1910 to 1921  (https://www.familysearch.org/s/image/show#uri=http%3A//pilot.familysearch.org/records/waypoint/6468996&hash=Mrd8SMocDIIen2Q83tu%252B82PRagg%253D)

Hi,

 :)

Thought you might find the "Safety in Numbers" document interesting if you are looking at Prestwich Asylum.  You can download the PDF from this link:-

Also have you considered Rochdale Union Workhouse.  I think by 1911 it was a hospital or had a hospital attached as I had a 3 x gt grandfather who was in there in 1911 and his status was recorded as "patient".

Asylums seem to have been organised on a county-wide basis rather than locally.
I've found someone from Garston as an inmate at Whittingham near Preston, though Winwick (and maybe others) would have been a lot nearer.

There was an asylum and workhouse at Oldham ( now the royal Oldham Hospital ) It is on Rochdale Road Oldham. Which is not too far from Rochdale. The Asylum later became the Elizabeth Martland Unit for the mentaly infirm. The building is still there I think. If this is of no help try writing to the Rochdale Infirmary I feel sure they will have archives. Jo
