Title: Gellatly Edinburgh
Post by: Wee lassie on Tuesday 25 January 11 13:20 GMT (UK)
Hi
I wonder if anyone can help me find any information on Thomas Gellatly and his wife Maria Howie. They had a daughter Maria born in Edinburgh in 1799. She married John Kennedy in 1828 and died in 1866, all in Edinburgh. All I have is the name of her parents and a possible birth for Thomas in 1769 in Edinburgh.
Any help would be very welcome.
Cheers

Hi Wee Lassie

Have you come across this 1841 census entry. Those showing as born outside the county of Midlothian are indicated below:

Thomas Gellatly 84, b. Scotland
Maria Gellatly 58, Seamstress b. England
Catherine Gellatly 20, Seamstress
Margret Gellatly 18, female servant
Charles Cant 25, Gardening, b. Scotland
Mary Cant 20 b. Scotland
John Cant 6 Months

Address: No 33 Arther St, Edinburgh St Cuthberts

No relationships included within the household for the 1841 census.

No I hadnt come across this. I will look into this further. Big age difference is that husband and wife or father and daughter? Dates don't quite add up but worth investigating further

Hi Wee Lassie

(From IGI) Daughter Maria was christened "Moria Gellitly" in the Canongate 15th October 1799 to parents Thomas Gellitly and Mary Howie.

There is also an entry for a marriage that same year in the Canongate.

"Ann, daughter of Thomas Gelletly labourer, and Thomas Wilson Joiner 22nd Feb. 1799 "

Given the name is not that common it could be a relation.

There are these possible sibling entries in Edinburgh:

Margaret Gelletley b. 9 Aug 1808 to Thomas Gelletley and Maria How - likely died young and name re-used?
Grace Gellatly b. 30 Nov. 1810 to Thomas Gellatly and Maria How
Margaret Gelletley chr. 20 June 1817 to Thomas Gelletley and Maria Howes

Also, double checked the transcription on FreeCen where the family show as Gelletly and Thomas does show as aged 84.

Just in addition to Monica's find of Thomas and Maria's children, there's also:

Katherine Milli- Galetely, 1814, St Cuthberts - Thomas Galetely and Moria Howe

She does appear on the 1841 (again posted by Monica ;D) but her birth/christening is not an extracted entry on the IGI. It only appears on SP.

The middle name (which only partially appears on the SP index) may be useful to find, just in case it's a family name.

I have also found death for Thomas Gelletly in 1848 aged 90. I am not sure if he is Marias father !  I have also found birth of a Thomas Gellatly in 1769. that would make more sense age wise but I am still confused. I would assume they are related but how? There is not enough age difference to be father and son.

Thomas in the census is either Maria's father in law or husband you would think (not that uncommon for an older man to marry a younger woman, even today  ;)).  Not sure about that possible 1769 entry in Midlothian, father to that Thomas shows as John.

So as I see it
Looks as if Thomas was born around 1758. I can't find that birth anywhere. According to census Maria senior would have been 16 at time of her daughters birth so that looks as if it adds up. Will now try and find her birth.

From that likely 1841 census entry, Thomas shows as not born in Midlothian but in Scotland, Maria shows as born in England - a wide search...

The surname Gellatly is native to the Carse of Gowrie and still fairly common in Perth and Dundee and thereabouts. Also spelt Galletly and Gallitly and several other variants.

Wee Lassie and All Blacks,

An hour to spare, another brief look for ancestral clues and a few keystrokes led me unexpectedly to Wee Lassie's 2011 request for information about Milne Square Edinburgh.   Being a descendant of John and Maria (via Thomas) I was very curious to see what other information was available so I have just registered and found your exchanges on Maria's parentage.   This is where my part-time research drew a blank some years ago.

To come across other family members on this side of the tree exchanging information is a new experience for me so it's going to be interesting to read through what has been said.   Perhaps I'll be able to fill in a gap or two and maybe you'll allow me to ask the odd question where I draw a blank?

For the record I had hoped to find Milne Square on a visit to Edinburgh a few years ago, but I think it now lies underneath an Italian restaurant!.  I recall there were however a couple of other addresses of family members from the 1800s still in existence.

Regards,

Hi hi vis (that looks a little strange!)
Sorry I have taken so long to reply but I have been on holiday.
Great to hear from another distant relative. What is your connection to Maria and John?
I have a fantastic picture of Milnes square which was sent to me by another Roots Chat member which I would be happy to send to you by email. It even shows pawnbrockers balls!
I haven't managed to get back any further than Thomas and Maria Howie but I live in hope.
It would be good to share any info that we have.
If you send me a personal message we can exchange emails.
look forward to hearing from you
Cheers

Hi Wee Lassie,

I realise that this is a long time after the original post but worth a shot as I am also descended from Thomas Gelletly and Mary Howie from their Daughter Maria who married John Kennedy and their son Thomas McGowan Kennedy.  I've had zero luck so far and was wondering if you've made any progress.

Merry Christmas (well Boxing Day) and look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards.

Ricky
