Title: COMPLETED"Cemetery Request" Christchurch area
Post by: porridge301 on Monday 24 January 11 21:29 GMT (UK)
Hi Everyone,

I have a number of ancestors buried around the Christchurch area.

Josiah Hadley buried 11 December 1875 at the Weslyan Cemetery, could be under Joshua Hadley

Henry Wade buried 30 May 1888 at Avonside

Christina Hadley buried 9 September 1893 Avonside

Susannah Elizabeth Wade and Charles Hadley Wade Barbadoes Street Cemetery, area 6 - 964

any photo's of graves I would love if they still exist and if not I would be more than happy with a photo of the cemetery.

Cheers ;D

Hi Glenys,

On our resource board are the names of people who offer cemetery lookups.  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,508522.0.html.

scroll down to the South Island and perhaps send a personal message to one of the people.

Glenys,

There are two Susannah Elizabeth Wades buried at Barbadoes Street Cemetery one in 1859 age 3 and one in 1863. It is a very old cemetery and in quite bad repair in places. It would be wonderful if there is a marker for the graves.

Suzy do you know where the Weslyan Cemetery is? :)

The Wesleyan Cemetery is no longer in use, There was a Wesleyan cemetery in Withells Road. The bodies were transferred to a common grave in Waimairi Cemetery.
So looks as if Waimarri needs to be investigated.

No luck with Hadley for Christchurch cemetery search, only later deaths 1979-2005 and one still born in 1941.
I wonder if names were lost when bodies were relocated?  :-[

This is great, Susannah Elizabeth Wade died in 1863 and it appears her brother is in the same grave.

Thank you for the Weslyan info, it looks like Josiah's body has been lost!!!....lol.

Glenys I will go to Barbadoes Street for you, I have never been to that cemetery so it will interesting for me. I live out of town so it might be a few days till I get in there - if you don't mind the wait.

Thank you that would be great.....and of course I can wait, My information came from the Canterbury Museum and at one time there must have been an inscription. Dont worry too much about headstone if it is difficult to locate or just cannot be found, I would love a photo of the cemetery.

area 6

964 - In memory of Susanna Elizabeth Wade, born in Goulburn, NS Wales 10 July 1859, died 8th May 1863. "come to my grave, our god to bless, who to my happy souls hath given, More than a mother's tenderness, A saviour's love, a home in heaven. Also of Charles Hadley Wade, who died 24 January 1866 aged 18 weeks.

Would I contact the Christchurch Council about the Weslyan Cemetery and the details of it being moved?

Cheers
Glenys ;D

LOL.  I was going to say Newbie would be the one, you are very close to Avonside.

I wonder if the Weslyan churches have burial records?  Or more information on how and why the bodies were removed and not recorded into the new plots, unless it was a mass grave with no headstones?

Canterbury museum may hold more answers or Christchurch Public Library.

Hi Newbie,

All I have on death certificate is Avonside Cemetery, so I assume all is the same. Christina Hadley died 6 September 1893, buried on the 9th.

Henry wade died 28 May 1888, buried o  the 30th.

Thank you for your help and if you are unable to locate grave/headstone a photo of the cemetery would be great.

Cheers
