Hi
I'm trying to establish why my Grandmother was born in the Union Workhouse - Pontypridd in 1900. Yet in the 1901 census she reside with her parents in Cardiff Road, Treforest, Pontypridd.
Where do I start to unravel this puzzle??
Regards
Paul.

Hi there,
There was a materity unit in the workhouse for unmarried mothers. Perhaps your G grandmother was not married when she gave birth to your grandmother.?
kindest regards

Thanks Heddwch
I didn't realize the workhouse had it's own maternity unit. The puzzle arises from the fact that my great grandparents were married in Treherbert in October 1894. In the 1901 census they were registered as still married and all living at home!!!!
I can only assume the parents must've fallen on hard times for a while or the husband was away working!!
Best Regards
Paul.

Your ggrandmother may not have been an inmate, probably just using the infirmary there. They might not have been able to afford the fees charged by a doctor.
You could try the records held at the Glamorgan record office to see if the mother was an inmate or not. They have admissions & discharges for the period & births.

Look at this site under workhouse life, there's info under medical care

Hi
My husband's gt gt grandparents both died in the workhouse too.
They are buried in Eglwysilan church cemetary, Abertridwr. However there is no headstone and we are not sure exactly where they are buried because on his dead certificate it says that his gt gt grandfather committed suicide while in an unstable mind. He jumped off the first floor window sill.
You may need to check where your ancester was living prior to entering the workhouse and check the cemetaries in that area too.
Good luck

someone did look at the Glyntaff records and William Roberts is not there.
I did get his death cert finally ( I had been off by 2 years) and he died of kidney disease, at age 49. I was also told that if someone was ill they went into the workhouse for medical care.
William was in the Army for 22 years and had a pension so I was surprised he ended up there. Guess a pension wasn't all that much.
will look at the Pontypridd poorhouse site, and will also try Abertridwr.
many thanks for the help. teddy

more than likely, he died in the workhouse infirmary rather than being an inmate of the workhouse. If he was the breadwinner of the family, there may not have been money to pay for his care, so the workhouse infirmary was the only option.

Hi all,
It may be worth possibly checking the records for St Ilan church which is on the top of the mountain at the borderline of Eglwysilan area over towards Abertridwr.
The area ran from the River Taf on the Glyntaf side of Pontypridd town area up over the mountain towards Abertridwr.
I think these may be held at the Ystrad Mynach council offices.

Dave

Hi.
We found all the church records in Cardiff records office.
We also checked the workhouse records there too.
Obviously there is the 100 year rule but we were lucky in that we were allowed to read the report at the discretion of the librarian - we were within months.
Good luck with your search
