The spelling of Irish names varies all the time for a variety of reasons, and there are many of these names across Ireland. Perhaps you could let us have the specific information you have on your Irish relations, so that we can help you.
Ideally we need to know the names you have, their religion, dates of birth/marriage/death and the townland/parish you know/think they came from.

Karen- is there an Irish connection further back? From your last post it looks like Michael was born in Leeds, England and was in England in 1901 and 1911?
If you are trying to find details of Michael's parents this thread you'll need to check English records- is Michael's father's name and occupation listed on his marriage certificate? have you found him in earlier census records (hopefully as a child with his family), etc.
P.S. typing messages all in capitals is considered shouting and I'm sure you didn't mean to do that :)

Just had a quick look for Michael in 1881 census which is online (free) on www.familysearch.org. Searching for Michael Shearen born 1866 +/- 5 years England brings up on 2 entries-
1) Michael Shearan, age 13, born Leeds York England, scholar at "Shibden Industrial School", Southowram, York (born c1868)
2) Michael Sheerin, age 17, born Manchester

Think the 13 year old Michael in 1881 census might be the correct one so if he could be found in 1871 census his parents' details might help. Is there a link to Ireland anywhere yet?
-
The school should have a record of his parentage. I've pasted the website page below which gives the information. Maybe somebody who goes to Kew on a regular basis could help.
SHIBDEN INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL FOR ROMAN CATHOLIC BOYS, SHIBDEN, NR HALIFAX, YORKSHIRE.
AUXILIARY HOME St Vincent's, Howarth Street, Leeds, Certified in 1878 for 45 boys.
Records held at the Public Records Office, Kew - reference MH102/72 1877-1929

There seems to have been more than one establishment with the same name and it might be that if he was born in Leeds, West Riding, Yorkshire then the West Riding might have his details.
The a2a manorial record site has nine SHIBDEN records and it looks like there's a registry of children's details.
Use the link below and enter "Shibden school" in the search section "all these words"
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/advanced-search.aspx?tab=1
Good luck.
-
That looks more promising for school records but if someone could find him in 1871 census (aged about 3 years) then there's a chance his parents, and other siblings, might be listed.

Hi,
Sorry no, I don't have a DOB for James but the census suggests 1835/1836.
From the school Michael is attending in 1881 the family could be Roman Catholic. I have no experience of finding RC records, but I'm sure someone else here will be able to point you in the right direction :)
I think this might be James and Mary in 1861, same address but HOLLAND looks like HOLLORAN ???
1861 RG09/3377 f.62 p.20 Leeds
55 Wellington Yard
Michael HOLLORAN Head M 47 Brush Hawker Ireland
Bridget " Wife M 47 Hawkers Wife "
Mary SHERAN Daur M 22 Work at Flax Mill "
James " Son In Law M 23 Bleacher "
Michael HOLLORAN Son Un 13 Cloth Dresser Leeds Yorkshire
Martin " Son 9 Scholar " "
Marriage
James SHEARAN Dec Q 1859 Leeds 9b 625
Mary HOLLORAN
This marriage cert. should give you James father's name.
Do you have Michael's marriage cert. to check who his father is?
Regards,
Daisy
Thanks Madri for showing the other post, I'd already typed all this out so I'll post it anyway. Maybe a Mod could combine the threads.

Post on MAYO board has now been locked so that all replies can be kept on the same thread. For reference-

wolliter - you gave details of a marriage in 1894 for Michael but also mentioned that you didnt know anything about his parents. Does his marriage cert not state his father's name and occupation ?
These details would help confirm or rule out the possible census records posted here....you probably have these already but here are the details you need to order a cert :
Marriages Sep 1894
Groom : Michael Shearan/Shearon
Bride : Florence Armstrong
Registration Distrct : Tadcaster
Volume : 9c
Page : 1197
The entry for Michael appears twice in the FreeBMD database and appears to have been transcribed that way by two different people. When you view the actual page you can see that the detail is also on the original index twice. Possibly just done like this as the original creator of the index was not certain of the spelling (seems very unlikely that two different Michael Shearan/Shearon would appear on the the same register page.).

thank you all
for your help which is appreciated by a novice like me
if i have posted it on another thread sorry as i am a complete beginner on here as well
i thought by posting micheal shearen and james shearen seaparetly i would get more replies for each one
sorry if this has caused a problem
did not mean to do so
regards karen

no problem... it's best to establish and confirm all the details you can about a person and their family have before moving on to the next step, otherwise it is possible to end up wasting time and money by following the wrong family.

Hi Karen,
Sorry I have only just seen your PM. I don't think I can be much help to you. My Shearons (Patrick and Margaret)were in Wolverhampton. I found a Patrick Shearn (born 1833) with Margaret (born 1832) living in Carribee Island on the 1861 census. He has 4 sons (William 16, Patrick 9, John 6, Edward 2) and 1 daughter (Catherine 11). The last 2 sons are on a separate page where the surname is definitely Sheran.
I can find Patrick and Margaret Sheeran in Carribee Island on the 1851 census. They have a son 5 (William) and a daughter 2 (Catherine). The birth years are Patrick 1821 in Ireland and Margaret 1825 in Ireland.
I think they are both the same family. So far I can't find them in the 1871 census.

Hi Mike, not sure if you are still researching (and you may well have found them after 6 years!), but I think I found Patrick and Margaret on the 1871 at Wednesbury. He is now a rag gatherer and they are at 6 Bolton Sqre (I think that's what it says anyway!) with children John and Edward. The name shows as Shean.
I am connected to the family through son John Patrick born 1854 at Wolverhampton. He ended up a Chimney Sweep in Worcester, appearing occasionally in the newspapers for his behaviour ;-)
I think Patrick died Wolverhampton 1886 but still looking for what became of Margaret. If you have any clues, please let me know!
