Hi all,
I've been trying to find a marriage for a while now for my great great great grandfather George Tharme and my great great great grandmother Ann Tharme formally Stannard.
On their son Robert's 1854 birth certificate (my great great grandfather) it lists George as a butler and Robert's mother as Ann Tharme formally Stannard. On the 1851 census Ann was still in Suffolk with their oldest children and George is listed as a butler for Lord Manners in Westminster. On the first census my great great grandfather is on (1861 in Marylebone) Ann is the head with the rest of the children. I've been looking everywhere trying to find a marriage between them in London and in Suffolk where Ann was born but i have so far found nothing. They would have been married in the 1830's i pressume. Ann died in Marylebone in 1863 when my great great grandfather was about 9. I can't find George on any census until i found him reappearing on the 1881 census with his second wife. George died in 1894.
Thanks
Craig

As you probably know Ancestry has the Roberts family tree descended from George Tharme and that also leaves this question unanswered . If of course they were married before 1837 then one would need to find the appropriate parish records. It looks as though George was b. 1808 in Staffordshire. By 1837 they had two children - George and Emma - so the most likely year of marriage would be 1834 or close. Ann is reputed to have been b. 1814 so that ties in with her last child b. 1855 - about 41 or 42 seems to be near the limit of child-bearing back then.
Their first child was christened at Southwold, Suffolk so that is probably where the marriage also took place. You need someone who can access those parish records.

I notice that Ann was 37 on the 1851 census but eldest child was only 5yrs old
I wonder if she was married previously in which case - the remarriage would not be as Stannard - see example
Ann Stannard marries Joe Bloggs and is widowed
Ann Bloggs marries George Tharme
Birthcerts will show mothers true maiden name - Stannard

George Tharme, born Colton?, Staffordshire, aged 53, is a servant and indicated as married in the 1861 Census (RG9; Piece: 43; Folio: 46; Page: 11).
George Tharme is also indicated as married in the 1851 Census (HO107; Piece: 1475; Folio: 563; Page: 27).
He can be found at HO107; Piece 733; Book: 13; Folio: 19; Page: 31 for the 1841 Census.

Hi Ray,
Thanks so much for all the information.
Some of the information you mentioned for George Tharme i have already but did miss that 1891 census entry. Thanks.
My great great great grandmother Ann Tharme died in Marylebone in 1863.
If the George Tharme on the marriage records for 1856 is my great great great grandfather then it looks like he committed bigamy? due his wife at the time, Ann Tharme, was still in suffolk with the kids? But sometime after that Ann and the kids moved to Marylebone by the 1861 census.

Insofar as the 1856 marriage is concerned George Tharme married Jemima Howell. George and Jemima had the following children baptised at St Mary, Bryanston Square:
20 Mar 1859 - Jemima Tharme (George indicated as being an omnibus conductor)
23 Aug 1863 - John Tharme (George indicated as being a coachman)
3 Jun 1866 - Ann Emily Tharme (George indicated as being an omnibus driver)
From the 1861 Census this George was born about 1835 in Southwold, Suffolk (presumably the son in reply #1).

Hi Nigel
Yes, George's first son with Ann was called George born in 1835 he died aged 51 in 1886 in St. Pancras. So the George Tharme born 1808 didn't commit bigamy in 1856. Phew!

The Suffolk Marriage Index is on findmypast, but I also have it on cd.

Thanks Suffolk Sue. As i have never seen a marriage record that is before 1837. Does it list any other infomation other than the names and the place of marriage?

Have a look at some of the parish registers for Norfolk at the following link. They will give you a good idea of the type of information that is available at various dates.
