Title: Elizabeth Bell
Post by: aspin on Sunday 23 January 11 17:33 GMT (UK)
Elizabeth Bell was married at Warkworth 2.12.1844 to Selby Douglas
I have the marriage
Her father is John Bell ,looking in familysearch.org I cannot find her birth
On the marriage certificate it gives underage  ,so I take it she was under 18years old

1881 census has her living at North Broomhill with husband Selby and their family aged 51

Any help please

Elizabeth

Minor would be under 21.

She has her mother with the 1871 family.
her birthplace also varies when looking through.

Where is Amble?

Looks like Elizabeth Bell in 1851. She's a widow.

1881 gives her as aged 51 married to Selby, therefore born 1831.  Are you sure the marriage is definitely right in 1844 as she would have been 13 (but legal I think?) and Selby seems to be about 19.

taking her back 10 years to 1871 the birthdate still corrolates as 1831.  Her mother Elizabeth Bell Snr seems to be her and Selby with them in 1871, aged 81 years, so it seems we have John & Elizabeth as parents.

1861 gives her as 22, birth date would then be 1829, adding a couple of years

So we have Elizabeth and John the parents of Elizabeth Bell born Warkworth about 1828-30

If you see on 1881 census there is a granddaughter also Elizabeth Bell aged 3

This is another problem did Selbys wife have a baby
before marriage if not who is baby Elizabeth's mother ( unless she died in childbirth )also one of the Douglas girls must have had Barbara

I thought I had a funny family my husband has too  :o
Ruth you ask about the marriage I will try to scan part of it

Popping in before i start work to thank Ruth and Pauline
for their reply

I was busy entering some more of this family into my family tree when my husband spoke to me and I clicked on delete of his father and lost quite a lot of the work I had entered in

So after dinner yesterday I had to start and enter all back in
It took me up to 10 o'clock last night

So sorry I didn't get back to thank you

Hoping tonight to see if i can find any more on Elizabeth Bell
Thank You again

Pauline Amble is a small fishing town in North umberland on the east coast
I see you are from where some of my Monkhouse and Wraey family came from

Hi Elizabeth

I’m not sure whether you are still looking for this information but I had a few spare minutes at the records office and dug out the following from Warkworth baptisms

All to John and Elizabeth Bell of Amble, Blacksmith

Margt (or possibly Mary) 2/6/1822
Isabella    8/8/1824
Edward   19/3/1826
Isabella   23/8/1829
Robert   23/10/1831

No Elizabeth

The burials were on a different microfilm so I have no way of telling whether the first Isabella died but it is possible that the vicar wrote down Isabella instead of Elizabeth - it’s been done before.  ::)

There were other Bell families showing up at the same time but I only looked for John and Elizabeth.

aspin, you are quite correct in saying that Amble is a small fishing port on the East coast of Northumberland.  I don't think we have a west coast in the county. ;D  But being serious, wasn't coal exported from there up until about the 1960s, and were there any staithes at the harbour ?  It would be interesting to know the tonnage of coal out of the harbour.  I know it would be nowhere near that of Blyth, but I think there was a reasonable amount of coal shipped out.

Whenever you like  :)

I always take a few extra things to Woodhorn - in case I find everything I want at the first attempt (yeah I know, eternal optimist) but usually it's in case I'm bored with the people who refuse to be found.

It can have advantages though as I've come across one or two ancestors who have been in parishes that I wouldn't have normally looked at.

Hope it helps anyway.

Christine ,
Sorry for the relay
I had computer trouble last night and just got it up and running again tonight
All I have on Elizabeth Bell is her marriage to Selby Douglas from Tweedmouth 2.12.1844 the address is }Radcliffe Terrace Selby full age Elizabeth under age
her father is John Bell a Carrier and Selby's father John Douglas  a Pitman
Looking at 1881 census the family with Selby and Elizabeth
Are Margaret aged 22,Robert 19,Joanna 16 all born Radcliffe then Mary aged 14 born Slackburn ( this could be Sleekburn ) and John aged 12.b Chevington
also living in the house with them are two granddaughters Elizabeth Bell and Barbara A Douglas both born Chevington

you are right Amble is on the east coast JenB
Pityackafromblyth sorry have I that right
Amble once had a big fishing fleet when my husband first started fishing in 1962 now we only have a few boats left its such a shame but this in modern times and cut backs have made the fleet dwindle away
Yes I remember the staithes and it was terrible in those days trying to keep the white washing white
if the wind was from the west .
I married and came into Amble in 1959 so I really cannot tell you about the coal part of it .As i came from up the north road a village on the A1
But I do know Blyth was and still is a much bigger Port I still have to go there if our fishing boat is there

Hi

This is very interesting than you. I have done a DNA test and I'm trying to match up to other trees. Elizabeth Bell is a contender as she appears in a tree that I am matched to, so interested in tracing her and her family.

I have confirmed family in Warkworth and immediate area south (Morwick Hall) - mainly Gacscoigne/Gaskin, but also Morrison, Scott.
