Hi,
Looking for the marriage of Charles CLACY & Lillian EARLE in South Australia. Charles CLACY came from Reading, Berkshire, England in 1850. I have searched unsuccessfully for their marriage in Victoria, so it either looks like they married in South Australia before they came to Victoria, or else they didn't marry at all. Any help much appreciated.
Sharon.

Thankyou everyone for your information. I am trying to help my Uncle sort this out - it is his brick wall.
Charles CLACY is said to have married Lillian EARLE in 1861, but we have been unable to find a marriage.
The information about Charles CLACY arriving in Australia in 1850 is from a family bible.
We don't know Charles CLACY'S parents names. Lillian's maiden name is EARLE. She was married to a THORNTON and had 2 children to him before she 'married' Charles CLACY.
Thankyou Cando for deciphering 'Living at World Upside Down Beer Shop' in the 1841 Census - we were having trouble working that out. We are wondering if that is our Charles CLACY in the 1841 Census as he ended up becoming a Publican in Victoria. What a quaint name for a Pub/beer shop!
We're not sure where the name PRESTON fits in. It is an intriguing puzzle.

The book by Ellen (aka Mrs Charles CLACY) on her visit to VIC had her leaving England at short notice April 1852 and arriving in Melbourne end of August. From early September until
early November late October she traversed the diggings. Then she embarked for England on 15 November 1852 for "her wedding trip home" along with her caro sposo (intended). By Christmas Day the ship was in the Tropics, and Ellen set foot in her homeland the end of February 1853.
Strange that neither her arrrival or departure is evident in VIC records.
It seems an illegitimate child was born at sea. Of course she did not include those personal details in her book nor did she say she met her future husband whilst in VIC but why wait until 1854 before getting married?
Ellen CLACY died in London in 1901. It has been suggested that her husband "absconded".

Hi Sharon
Ellen L Clacy nee Von Sturmer, is a distant relation of mine, she has lead a colourful life. Her daughter Ellen Clacy married 5 june 1854 to Charles Berry Clacy . Charles B Clacy was born 1819 Reading Berkshire England. d 23 August 1882 Boundary Hotel , Emerald Hill, Victoria. Death reg. no. 8530
Lillian Clacy nee Earle b1838 Middlesex, London England m 1859 d 19 August 1907 St. Kilda Victoria
He is buried with Lillian Clacy nee Earle in the St. kilda Cemetery compartment c grave no 1704, I have a photo of grave, there is no headstone or marker just the metal plaque with grave number.
Charles B Clacy father John Clacy b abt 1784 m ?d ?
mother Mary Ann Berry b1785, Hamburg,Wiltshire, England. m? d?
Lillian Clacy was Hotel Proprieter of the
Queens Arm Hotel High Street St. Kilda 1887
Newmarket Hotel 36 Inkerman Street St. Kilda 1888 - 1889, 1892 - 1894
CONFECTIONER
133 Grey St. St. Kilda
Ellen L Clacy often mentions that she was widowed dont believe this to be true that she was widowed I believe it suited her life style to be rid of husbands. there is a story that the first husband who she was pregnant to before coming to Australia with her brother absconded, as far as can tell never divorced and as far as i can tell never divorced Charles Berry Clacy and he went on and remarried to Lillian Earle. you just have to love a good mystery.
my grand father Richard Charles Ryan married Edith Florence Clacy, Ellen Clacy 1/2 sister.
just for interest Clacy is french as has something to do with Church bell ringers in France.

Hi Colin,
It appears Shazza has not been on Rootschat since May last year, but she should get notification for this thread if she still has the same email address.

I am Barry Clacy. Charles was my Great Grandfather. I have some new information on him. He arrived at Adelaide on the brig Corsair on 16th November 1843. He was one of just three passengers on the ship. I do not believe he married Lillian in Adelaide. She was in Adelaide but married to a John Thornton with whom she had two daughters. Charles was still in Adelaide in 1849 as there is a record of him giving evidence in a court case in 1849. I imagine he would have travelled to Victoria at the discovery of gold. He was mining at Simmons Reef at Blackwood in the early 1850's. He may have met Lillian in Adelaide but I think he took up with at a later date. When Charles died, the information for his Death Certificate was provided by a son in law of Lillian's who was married to one of the Thornton girls.
