have had a look in service/pension records for him and he,s not in those i also used the variants search ie pryce and still nothing as eng and ireland was all one armed force back then if he,s not in pension records there won,t be any other service records to find as all soldiers records were destroyed approx 20 yrs after leaving the army .
hope this helps

hi know he was enrolled to serve in the kilkenny fusiliers in march 1855ish then in september 1885 ish was released on condition he enlisted in the 88th regiement he was entered in the enrolment book of kilkenny fusiliers
have a copy of his obituary he died in england in 1901 at time of death he was a barrack sergeant
states on obituary he served in india .know he had a daughter who was born in hamilton scotland in the cavelry barracks
he sounds like he travelled about a fair bit i have a copy of the church record of his baptisem in 1835 in mothell
his father was in the military but have no idea whitch regiement
know Joseph enlisted in limerick but no idea of the regiement he enlisted in
i always wondered if he followed his father into service in the same regiement
have no info to prove this just a whim i thought sounded plausable
as info is very scetchy at this time i have no high hopes of getting any more info

the 88th was an infantry regt but he was transferred to the 90th another infantry regt hence why i didn,t find him plus what you have for birth place is different to his pension record and yes i,ve found him and he had quite a service time ,as it,s getting late i,ll write it all out tomorrow for you .

Hi there Moony,
I sent you a pm earlier today.
The 88th regiment of foot became the Connaught Rangers, the 90th Regiment became the Perthshire Volunteers until 1881.
I will be intrigued as to how Trevor found him as I scoured all over the place.
Cheers Roger.

i gave his birth place as mothell as this is were he was baptised .and just assumed he was born where he was baptised .

thats the lot , so somewhere there is an indian mutiny medal with his name on it and a shame if it,s not in the family some place , he had a some what chequered career but pulled himself back to full promotion good on him .
as to the indian mutiny part it,s worth reading up on that as it makes for a very sad and terrifying time for those civilian brits who were out in india especially women and children as no quarter was shown to them .
if you are interested i can recommend this book written by saul david entitled the indian mutiny
it,s a very comprehensive view of the whole episode and has quotes from letters written by folk who were there .
sorry for the history lesson but it does help to put meat on the bones of josephs time out in india and his luck in coming through unscathed .
best wishes to you both

thank you so much for the info Trevor and Roger it is very kind of you i am thrilled with it.
i would appreciate any books recommended i would love to read about the past he was involved in.none of us know anything about a medal unfotunatly would have been nice to have seen it
i have visited his grave he is buried in Warrington cemetery in Cheshire was Lancashire. he is named on the grave stone along with his wife Fanny
got a copy of his obituary from Warrington librarys archives
rather puzzled as he is stated as a barrack sergeant on his death obituary
states procession walked from Orford barracks to the cemetery where he was interred with full military honours including gun shots over the grave
know it is the right Joseph as he is recorded as born in castlecomer in obituary assumed mothel was a parish in castlecomer why would his service have finished but at his death in 1901 he was given a military funeral and described as barracks sergeant
once again thank you so much
i am away from tomorrow untill friday so if anything sent please do not think i am ignoring it
will be next weekend before i can get to a computor again
kind regards Mareith

hello. Trevor and Roger
i am being very cheeck i wonder if you could look for a William Price he was in the 90th reg in the Peninsular war
i am clutching at straws here but Josephs father was named William and he was a military person
i wondered if Joseph followed his father into service
also could you possibly explain for me how Josephs record ended a good while before he died
but on his obituary he had a military funeral and was a barracks sergeant
hope you do not mind me asking but you have been so helpful in the past
best regards Mareith

hello mareith
the only william price in the 90th with a birth in the 1700,s is this one
william price born 1796 parish killone town koolarney co sligo
age at att 15 att date 30 mar 1811
90th regt of light infantry discharge soldier no 169
service length , 28 mar 1814 - 22 apr 1835 = 21 yrs 26 days [ the difference between the att date of 1811 and service date of 1814 is that he was underage when he originally joined up so his service time only counts from the age of 18 ]
served 8 yrs in the Mediterranean
discharged due to pulmonary disease and general debility due to service conditions .
on discharge he was 39 yrs old 5 foot 6 and 3qtrs brown hair grey eyes and a sallow complexion
he must have missed out on waterloo as no wm price,s in the 90th are mentioned in waterloo medal roll .
as to joseph i can only surmise that after discharge they kept him on in a civillian capacity as barrack sgt , it would be interesting to know the duties of such a post it could be he did the day to day running of the barracks and with such a distinguished career a military funeral was the least they couldfor him .
best wishes

trevor thank you so much for the information
he must (i mean )Joseph have been kept on in a civilian capacity
i have no idea what his duty was in this post .
i think he must have worked hard on his death certificate one of the causes of death is stated as exhaustion
i was just clutching at straws re William i found a William Price in the 90th as was his son i just wondered if son followed father
i have no info on William apart from he was in the army.
i do not think he married in the same place his son Joseph was baptised as i have searched the parish records and several Williams but none married a rebecca
sorry if i have rambled on
regards Mareith
-
hi mareith
sorry i,m a bit confused re william and rebecca as she hasn,t come into my part of this before , so i,m presuming william married a rebecca ? who had joseph , as to parishes and places of birth don,t get bogged down by looking in specific places if you don,t find something or someone where you feel they should be start moving out in a circumference around that area , but always be prepared to think outside the box and never take census records as gospel some folk lied through there teeth i should think and told the enumerators any old rubbish at the time so again treat everything with caution until you can back it up with cast iron facts .
now that,s rambling on ;D ;D ;D .
if i can be of any other help please feel free to ask as always glad to be of assistance .
best wishes

Trevor. sorry yes Rebecca is named as Joseph Prices mother on the copy of the church record as his mother with William as his father
i cannot use census records or copies of birth certificates as it is to far back birth certificates start later
census records do not hold any information for me to locate anybody as so far back the info on them is limited
i searched church records and found Joseph Price .right fathers name right place of birth right age .going forwards i can easely trace his family up to date so know i am right
but i have searched marriage records in the same location and found a few marriages for a William Price but not a William who married a Rebecca
so i suppose they must have married some where else.
i have found Rebeccas death certificate in the same location as her son Josephs birth
have a copy of this and she is described as the widow of a military pensioner desceased
as this is the ony Rebecca Price i can find and know her husband William has died by the time the son Joseph married in England
on Josephs marriage cert his father is described as military pensioner deceased
the marriage is proving very hard to find as you say i have to look further afield
for it
but hopefully i will locate it at some time
fortunatly for me Price was not a very common name in Ireland around this period
well thanks for all the help you have given very gratfull
regards Mareith
