I would like to request a lookup of a marriage occurring at Long Melford sometime between 1st october 1852 and 31st december 1852 between Benjamin Mitchell and Hannah Lymix/Lynix? I am particularly interested in the name of Hannah's father.
Many thanks in advance.

How do you know the marriage took place between those dates??
If you are going by the marriage registration FreeBMD -then it just states Dec qtr Sudbury reg districtso the marriage could have taken place between mid-end Sept to Mid/end Dec somewhere in that registration district
also I am wondering if Hannah's name has been mistranscribed.
looking at 1861 census -if I have the correct family - hannah is a widow - and she has a Mitchell stepson -which indicates benjamin had been previously married
She also has a son whose surname is transcribed as Lomas (image it could be Lomax)
so was hannah a Lomax/Lomas when she married ?
if so had she been married before??
If you have any more information it would help narrow the search

If this is the family, Bridge Street is in fact a hamlet a couple of miles to the north of the village of Long Melford.

John -I know you were asking for a marriage look up - I am trying to find out what Hannah's maiden name was??
It seems (if the 1861 family is correct) that it would be Lomax

Both of full age
Both of Melford
Both signed X

I also checked Long Melford for a burial of the first Mrs Mitchell but could not find it, nor any earlier baptisms of children of the first marriage.
These baptisms were at Long Melford:
19th June 1853 - Sarah Ann d/o Benjamin and Hannah Mitchell
6th September 1857 - Mary Ann (born 1/3/1855) and Benjamin, both children of Benjamin (dec.) and Hannah Mitchell.
I couldn't see Benjamin's burial in the Long Melford registers but on the Suffolk Burial Index there is an entry for a Benjamin Mitchell being buried at Alpheton (about 4-5 miles from Long Melford) on 16th January 1857 aged 46.
Regards
Anne

and the hamlet of Bridge Street is between Long Melford and Alpheton.
Bridge Street residents tended to use Long Melford Holy Trinity Church (where my children were baptised ;D

Just to say a big 'thank you' to all who have replied to my request and especially to Anne who was kind enough to look up the marriage for me, and thank you also for the additional information.
To Suzard: The quarters for marriages (unlike births and deaths) are precise - a marriage for the December quarter will take place between 1st October - and no earlier - and 31st December - and no later. I did a study of this in registers in London and there were no exceptions to this.
If you do find evidence that I am wrong about this then please let me know!

Hi John,
I think you will find that it is when the marriages were registered -or the registrations were entered -not always the period when a BMD took place.
I have two marriage certs reg Mar qtr -but they took place late Dec the year before.
A marriage which took place at the end of a quarter can quite possibly be registered in the next quarter.
I think it is probably looking into whether "Lymix" is a mistranscription of "Lomax"
I haven't found any other "Lymix" in the census in the same area???
