HI Everyone:
I got some information from a family member that my 2nd great grandmother is buried in this cemetery. I can see on google maps that it is no longer a church, but it appears there still might be a small cemetery there. Is anyone close to this location and can anyone help me? Her name was Mary Mitchell and we have a date of death of 10 Oct 1854 or it might be 1864. Thanks in advance for the help!

The only comment that I can make to this item is that I went to this primary school, up to the age of 11 in 1947, prior to going on to grammar school. I do remember the small burial ground which was behind the church building, abutting on to the playground. The church of St. Wilfrid was located on Bedford Street whilst the access to the school was on Rutland Street and Clopton Street. I am sure someone on the great site will be able to help you.

Thank you both. Well at least you have confirmed there was a burial ground there so this is promising. Thank you also for the web site as I have not been to that one yet.
I just recently got this information from another family member so we are still putting the pieces together, but this is so much fun searching and finding family from the past.
Based on the information and the census they lived very near this church. However, I have noticed that a lot of the roads listed in the 1851 and 1861 census no longer are in the area. I did find one street, but there is nothing built there from that time period and it is all industrial.
Thank you again for your input!

If you put Birchvale Close, Hulme, Manchester on a "Google" Maps seach and then use the little yellow man it brings you on a street view outside St Wilfrid's Primary School and then you can see the church next door. Can't see if the graveyard is still there though because I can't get the little yellow man to walk in the right direction ::).

Yes I tried the little yellow man too and just can not find the cemetery.
You know I did have a thought... if the mother was buried at the church cemetery there is a good chance that some of the children may have been born or married at the same church. Do you see many Mitchell or Mulligans?
Thanks again everyone!

My 2 x gt grandmother's maiden name was Mullin but on quite a few of the childrens' birth certificates she was recorded as "formerly Mulligan". She was born in Ireland. I think all her children were baptised at St Wilfrid's (between 1877-1895). Her married name was Grant.
Thought I would mention it just in case.

Hi I wonder if you can confirm a marriage for me....
Ernest WALKDEN
Mary Elizabeth HARRIS
22 April 1901
I am also trying to locate a burial place for both of them...Ernest died in 1937 and Mary in 1928. I have tried Manchester & Southern Cemetery with no luck. Even though Ernest's parents and some siblings are all buried in the same plot at Southern. Still waiting to hear back from the Cremetorium. But I wondered if St Wilfreds is a Catholic church would they be buried there ??

Did they die in the Hulme area? Do you have there address's? It may help
-
Hi thanks for your replies. I have their address when Mary died as Herbert St Hulme and Ernest address was Nell Lane Hulme when he died.
I had a look on the register that you mentioned willie bat and it looks like they had several of their children christened at St Wilfreds too !!

I have checked the project database - and only 1 Walkden mentioned, but not yours.

MANCHESTER CREMATORIUM
Memorial Inscriptions Project
1892 - circa 1940
The Missing Records
Early in 2001 I came across a thin folder in the Manchester & Lancashire FHS library.
This contained photocopies of a document which turned out to be part of the report
and accounts for the Manchester Crematorium Company for 1900 in which brief
details had unusually been published of the first 412 people cremated at Manchester
Crematorium since its opening in 1892. Upon making further enquiries, I soon
discovered that this was the only surviving official record of those cremated there
before 1941.
The reason for this gap in the records was the loss of all of the Company’s records
during the “Christmas Blitz” of 1940. The building in which the Company had its
offices was destroyed in the bombing and with it the registers recording details of
those cremated. There were no other copies.

Well I have some good news about my Ernest WALKDEN. He IS buried at St Josephs in Morton YAY !!!! I phoned them this morning and they gave me the details. He is in a public grave with a headstone (another yay) so my aunt & I are going to have a look. Now I just need to find which section his wife and her family are buried. Mary Elizabeth Walkden is not buried with him but to find her details I need a date of death. The only thing I have is from free BMD is that she died in the Jan/Feb/Mar of 1928. Any idea on how I can get the actual date ???
-
Glad you found him ;D I take it you mean Section M
After all these years I just realised the spelling mistake "Doh" :P

Go to the office they may charge you for a burial search, or purchase the death certificate. either way it will cost :'(
