Hi,
I'm new to all of this but am finally starting the journey to piece together my family history.
Could anyone shed light upon how to get the best results going backwards from info on my grandparents who have been deceased for many years.
My father's side is Horatio Nelson Weir married to Matilda Cresswell, who lived in Tradeston, Glasgow. Both died in the 1960s and were married, I believe around 1913.
I believe "Nelson" had 2 x brothers - Ebeneezer or "Abie" and, I think, Alfred but not sure as both my parents are now deceased.
My mother's side is Davie McAulay married to Jessie (Ralston - I think?!?), again in Plantation/Ralston area. Jessie would have died around 1971 whilst Davie died in the late 1980s. His father, I understand, was of Irish descent/origin and was run over by a Tram car in Glasgow.
Any information already in extistence for these and beyond would be hugely welcome as would helpful guidance/advice.
Many thanks indeed. TW

Hi and welcome to Rootschat
A very good starting point would be the 1913 marriage cert as that will give you their ages and also the names and maiden names of their parents
I think this may be Horatio on the 1891 census for 17 Jamieson St Glasgow. All older children b Dundee Forfarshire
Horatio N Weir 42 b Glasgow last & boot tree maker
Ebenezer 12 b Dundee
Alfred 10
James 9
Horatio N 8
Lizzie H 7 b Glasgow
William H 4 b Glasgow
Glasgow Govan ED 106 Page 25 Line 6
1881 census for Angus as follows
Horatio Weir 32 last maker b Lanarkshire
Elizabeth 29 b Lanarkshire
Marion 4 b Lanarkshire but it then also has Forfar after it
Ebenzer 2 b Forfar
Alfred 1 b Forfar
St Peter ED 28A Page 7 Line 1

Hi TW and welcome :D
If you go onto the website Scotlands People you can download extracts of birth, marriage and death records...at a cost. £6 will get you 30 credits. It costs 5 credits to view an extract and you can save it to your pc. You'll use 1 credit to view search results.
There's a marriage extract showing for Horatio Nelson Weir and Matilda Cresswell, 1913, Plantation, Glasgow. The marriage extract will confirm the names of their parents.
Horatio is also showing up on the 1891 and 1901 censuses.
In 1891 he's at 17 Jamieson St in Hutchesontown. It says he was born in Dundee. He's there with his father and brothers and sisters.
Horatio N Weir 42
Ebenezer Weir 12
Alfred Weir 10
James Weir 9
Horatio N Weir 8
Lizzie H Weir 7
William H Weir 4
In 1901 he's at 1 South Wellington Street, Hutchesontown. This time it looks like his mother's there - Elizabeth*

Using the search engine on SP, looks like Horatio died 1965, and Matilda in 1968.
There's a Matilda Cresswell coming up on the 1901 census, born abt 1892 in Ireland. Parents William and Matilda. 45 Pollok St, Kinning Park Burgh.

There's a Matilda Cresswell coming up on the 1901 census, born abt 1892 in Ireland
See my reply above

Horatio's grandparents - Ebenezer Weir and Mary Agnew, married 14/8/1836 Glasgow. You can get this on SP, but because it's pre-1855 there's no guarantee it will name their parents.
-
David McAulay married Jessie Ralston in 1930, Camlachie, Glasgow. You can download that marriage extract too, and find out the names of David and Jessie's parents.
Jessie died in 1970. It looks like she was born around 1898. There's a suitable candidate on the 1901 census, living with her grandmother and parents, 39 Charles Street, Camlachie.
Parents: Daniel Ralston (born Ireland abt 1857, shoemaker) & Agnes Somerville (born Glasgow abt 1858).
Others:
Maggie Somerville (grandmother) 69
Andrew Somerville 34
Hugh Ralston 20
Agness Ralston 18
Robina Ralston 14
Sarah Ralston 10
There's a possible entry for Davie's death showing for 1989.
-
Horatio's parents - Horatio Nelson Weir & Lizzie Henderson, married 1876, Blythswood, Glasgow.

This is fantastic, will digest this and explore deeper
Thanks so much CaroleW and Jokdy!!!!

I've started a family tree and placed this info in - over 100 names for starters - WOW.
Am going to embark upon the Scotland's People journey which looks very promising given your excellent information.
I'm really curious to see how far back I can go and how much can be learned about these people.
Will need to try and find out a few things too. There is a family debate over how many kids Horatio & Matilda (married 1913) actually had, which is more tricky to resolve now there are few people left.
Many thanks again, this has been a massive help

Glad we could get you started on your journey, TW. Good luck with your tree! :D

I've been trawling through a great deal of archive now on the SP site and making great progress. However, I can't seem to link the Weir side properly. Some conflicting info on Horation Nelson b1849 seems to have parents as Ebenezer and Elizabeth Black whilst I was sure they should be Ebenezer and Mary Agnew.
Very interesting stuff though
TW

Where are you getting the info on his parents being Ebenezer and Elizabeth Black?
-
Hi there,
It's on the death certificate for H N Weir in 1916
TW
-
Hi TW
Be careful with the death extracts, information about parents is not always correct since it's reliant on the informant knowing all facts. I have several extracts in my possession where information pertaining to one/both parents has been wrong.
Having said that, if the informant is a son or daughter you'd think they'd know who their grandmother was ;D
Who is the informant on the certificate TW?
Jo
-
Hi there,
It was his son, Ebenezer so would have thought he should have gotten this right surely
TW
-
When did Mary Agnew die?
Would Ebenezer have met her?
-
Not sure, whe died in 1891 in a poor house sadly
-
Typos - sorry. She died in 1901 in a poorhouse
-
I think you just have to accept Horatio's son got the info wrong about his grandparents. As I previously said, it does happens. The marriage extract for Horatio and Elizabeth/Lizzie Henderson (1876) is you best bet for confirmation of Horatio's parents, since Horatio himself would have provided the information. It should have his father as deceased (died 1868 I think) and Mary as still living.
-
Yep, I think that makes sense
Thanks for this.
Any ideas on how I get more info when I hit the 1700s? Hitting a wall with John Weir and I think Elizabeth Robb as parents of Richard. Would be keen to keep going if at all possible.

Hi Dave,
Do you mean how many brothers and sisters did your Grandfather, William have? Quite a few Horatios in this family so just to be sure it's the right one
TW
-
Hello again Dave,
Think your saying:
Horatio had bothers called William (your Gfather), Horatio, Abraham and James and a sister Marion - I think this is all correct except have Alfred instead of Abraham and also a Mary and another Ebenezer - think Marion may have died very young. Your Gfather was the youngest.
Horatio jnr did have the 4 kids you named plus a James, Robert and Thomas.
What was the name of your uncle who remembered this?
