Title: J Katterns 7 Gold St, Northampton
Post by: retepniltub on Thursday 20 January 11 17:59 GMT (UK)
I have a portrait photo that was taken by J Katterns of 7 Gold Street, Northampton.

I also have another similar but later photo on card taken by the same photographer but his address is now 14 Marefair.

Can anybody tell me when this Mr Katterns was at 7 Gold Street.

Hopefully with this info I will able to identify who is being photographed with a lot more confidence.

Thank You

Peter

Hi Peter is it possible to scan the photos and put them on here.I have seen some photos dated 1870's that were taken by James Katterns at his Marefair address. This would of course depend on whether they were dated correctly.

George.

Yes, much easier to date by looking. Please show us the whole thing including the outer corners of the mount...and scan in colour please.

Cheers,
China

Well, that's late 1880s, maybe a hint of a shoulder kickup so call it 1889ish. Very nice photo.

Cheers,
China

Well this one says J. Katterns of Marefair, late of Gold Street but alas not when he left Gold Street. But if he is still using it on advertising I would imagine it was fairly recent.

Katterns photographers moved from Gold St to 14 Marefair in 1878, remaining there until the chap died in the early 1890s

He also had a "Celebrated Cigar Divan" on the premises!!

Basically its a "posh" smoking room/club/shop...Katterns was also a tobacconist....In the window there are "cartes de visite" at the top, and pipes at the bottom!!

Oh and some coffee houses were also known as "Divans" (coz of posh chairs!) where they had mainly smoking rooms...

Hi All

Thanks very much for your help.

Here are the two photographs, I have also scanned the backs of them.

I also have a couple of similar photos taken in Shefield, I will scan them in on another topic.
I have a good idea who the people are but a date of the pictures would confirm it,

many thanks

Peter

Ah, the much vaunted photos appear ;D

Top one late 1860s. The lady is wearing an 1860s style skirt but without the hoop petticoat which disappeared in about 1868, and a shawl which obscures her bodice and was a sort of universal old-lady custom of dress. Could be a little later as older women didn't always dress the latest, but the back shows the simple style of the 1860s.

See how the floor is a little out of focus? Early camera lenses had limitations.

Bottom photo, hard to date the clothing style but the photo style is a hard-edged oval, not seen before about 1870 and very popular in the late 1870s. The back also shows a late 1870s/early 1880s design.

Cheers,
China
