Does anyone know where Wintruphead is. I was looking at an old family headstone in St Michaels Graveyard in Dumfries
and it says John Kirkpatrick, blacksmith died at Wintruphead 2nd October 1867.
Any information would be grateful

Kathgill,
I suggest that you might consider that Wintruphead might represent the farmhouse of Winterhopehead in the parish of Middlebie. The map reference is NY 273823. Perhaps you have some further clues.
Bealach.

Hi bealach
Thanks for your reply. I have searched and searched and have come up with Winterhopehead near Dumfries. It is on the Bankend Road about 5 miles from Dumfries and quiet near to where other members of the Kirkpatrick family lived. It would appear to have been two cottages which are no longer there and replaced by a bungalow built many years ago. I was looking at William McDowall's record of St Michael's Church Memorials and this is where I got the original spelling of Wintruphead.
Thanks again for your help.

Hello Kathleen. Could you give me a bit of help finding Wintruphead. I know there is a Winterhopehead up in the hills to the East of Dumfries but I can’t find anything on the Bankhead road 5 miles away. My ancestors lived there as shown on the 1851 census.

Which parish is this Wintruphead/Winterhopehead in?

Hi there. It says Nithsdale, Dumfries.

Nithsdale isn't a parish, it's a district.

Winterhopehead is N.E. of Middlebie on Ainslie's Map.

Dougie44's post seemed to imply that there might be a second one in a different place, as he knew about one but couldn't find the one he was interested in.

There must be if it's 5 miles NE of Dumfries.

I've just been looking at a modern OS map (Street map) and the Bankhead Road runs to the SE of Dumfries - the Crichton is on it.
-
1861 census on Ancestry has John Kirkpatrick, blacksmith (63) living at 3 Winterhopehead, in Civil Parish Dumfries St Michael, therefore Winterhopehead would be much nearer Dumfries than Middlebie area.

This is I think a transcript from the excellent Scottish Indexes of the family found by hcc in 1851. Scroll on the map links and you will see there is a place called Wintriphead.

That definitely coincides with the Bankhead (Road) , referred to in #14

ev- it looks to me as if the OP and Dougie are referring to two different but similar places - one in Middlebie and one near Bankhead, SE of Dumfries.

and it says John Kirkpatrick, blacksmith died at Wintruphead 2nd October 1867.

My first time using this forum. Didn’t expect such quick and fantastic help. I wasn’t aware of the Scottish indexes. It indeed was SE of Dumfries at “Wintruphead” and not the farm at middlebie as I first thought. I’ll be back with more questions. Thank you all.

Winthrophead is on the Bankend Road about two miles from Dumfries. John Kirkpatrick the Blacksmith was my great g grandfather.
