Hi We are looking for any information on the Jackson family lived in and around Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire. My father in Law Fred Jackson was born there about 1932ish, We believe it was at large family who moved to Tibshelf in Derbyshire. We know that he had sisters called Sarah, Josie, Betty but we would like to know about his mum and dad and earlier family just to get us started

Hi Sheila,
Jackson is a very common name so it's difficult to research without much information. Just checking the 1901 census (30 years earlier) there are quite a lot of Jacksons in Edwinstowe. Do you have Fred's marriage certificate, to find out his father's name? Was Fred his full name, or was he a Frederick with a middle name perhaps?
I can't see any Fred* Jacksons born in Southwell district (Edwinstowe was in that district) around 1932.

Actually I seem to recall that Edwinstowe was part of Mansfield district by the 1930s, but I'm not sure if that is right. If so, there is this possible birth:
Births Dec qtr. 1931
Jackson, Fred, Simpson, Mansfield, vol. 7b: 159
I just want to make sure that Fred is not still alive is he, as we're not allowed to post about living people?

It looks like that is probably the right one as there are a number of other children with mother's surname Simpson, born in Mansfield district, including a Sarah, Josephine and Bessie. Won't post details in case they are alive.
This could be a possible marriage for the parents:
Marriages Jun qtr. 1916
Jackson, Henry, Simpson, Mansfield, vol. 7b: 125
Simpson, May, Jackson, Mansfield, vol. 7b: 125
However you want to be careful with names like Jackson and Simpson, not to make too many assumptions.

Hi Fred was my father in law and he died a few years ago, in Reading, Berkshire. We think he was the youngest sibling. We think that all of them are possibled deceased. Only one we are not sure was Sarah and she was living in London. Just remember another one was Annie, no males remembered.

Hi Fred married a Doreen Nora Parsons in Reading Berkshire in 1954m My husband was a 9month baby and was born at the end of January 1955
Both parents died at a young age and could not ask the relevant questions

To see all the possible siblings of Fred you can go to http://freebmd.rootsweb.com and select Mansfield district, put in Jackson for the surname and Simpson for the Mother's surname, and it will show their approximate birth years. Be careful though because they may not all be children of the same parents - there was another Jackson-Simpson marriage in 1911 in Mansfield district.
If you think that Fred's father came from Edwinstowe you could check the 1911 census to see if he was there - but no lookups are allowed on RootsChat.

Hi Sheila. This post is a bit old but I've just found you. I was brought up in Tibshelf in the Jackson family. I knew my aunts Josie (Oakley) and Betty (Clay) well and Fred, Annie and Grandad Jackson (George) when I was very young. My father was William (Bill) Jackson. He died November 1990 aged 74 in Cork, Ireland. My mother tells me that there were other siblings that I never knew - Bill, Charlie and Sarah. There's possibly more still there in mother's memory but it's hard to get to. She's 96 now and still going strong. She mentioned today that there are some well known characters in George Jackson's siblings in Edwinstowe - one may have been Peter Jackson. If you've found out anything more over the last year I would love to know it.

Hi Peter :) This is great news, as you know my father in law was Fred and he was the last born in the Jackson family in Victoria Terrace in Tibshelf and he was born in 1931. I have his birth certificate and this tell me his mother and father (upstairs in filing cabinet) but I will let you know the details. My husband Paul was also born in Tibshelf at Prospect Terrace in 1955 and he also remembers Grandad Jackson. I have done some research but it is leading me towards the Stafford area. Paul's grandad was born in Tibshelf but his father came from Stafford have you heard anything about this or am I wrong! Do you live in the North Notts area now. Sheila, I tried keeping in touch, writing to your Blidworth, Notts address and tried telephoning, but the reply was 'telephone number not recognised'.
It's Pat. Fred was my uncle, brother of my mum, Sarah (Sally). The last time we met was at Uncle Fred's funeral.
I found your below enquiries/posts when trying to research Grandad George Jackson.
I'm still in touch with Cousins Pam Hill and Colin Clay, Aunty Betty Clay's (Fred's sister), daughter and son, and Joy Newham (Aunty Josie's daughter) and my Mum's cousin, Pat Arnold. And, of course, Andrew and Kathleen.
I don't know how we contact one another outside this system.
Attached are some pictures - The Jackson Family (left to right back, Josie, I think, Charlie, Sally, Bnow ill, front, Annie, Grandad, Granma, Fred and Betty. Loulou, died in infancy, and I can't remember where she came. Uncle Bill's (Peter's father) wedding.
Peter, we've never met, but Mum talked a lot about your family, and I remember the hair-dressing shop that your mother ran, near Prospect Terrace. Didn't your sister go to the Royal College of Art? My son, Jon, is an artist.
My wonderful Mum died nearly five years ago now and I still miss her terribly.

WOW, WOW, WOW - it's the first time I have seen a picture of the Jacksons - let alone such a GREAT pictire of my parents wedding. It should bring back memories for my mum - now 97 years old. I have been in contact with Sheila but I haven't heard from her since June. She says that she has traced back to 1790!! Unfortunately she hasn't shared it with me yet. I've traced back the Jackson family through George and Emma (grandparents), Charles and Emily (great grand parents) to Joseph and Ann (great great grand parents). Joseph was born in 1832 so I've got a way to go to get to 1790. I have George's birth Certificate, George and Emma's Wedding Certificate and George and Emma's Death Certificates.
Everything before George and Emma needs to be reconciled but I'm 90% certain it's correct.
George was the last of four children - Alice, William and Annie - born in December 1886 but registered in 1887. He and Emma married in 1911 and there followed possibly 12 children. (Interestingly, George gave his address as 50 Lincoln Street, Tibshelf, on the Marriage Certificate. The 1911 census has a William Jackson living there with his wife and children. That would suggest that George stayed there prior to his wedding and gives credence that William was his brother.) My dad was third born and Sarah was fifth born. I have all their names and dates of birth. I know that the first died before the age of one and there was another child who died young.
Census information has Charles a widower by the time George was 4 and he was being looked after by his grandparents Joseph and Anne.
I'm hoping that someone will buy me a subscription to Genealogy.com so that I can get confirmation of what I have surmised and can get earlier through Parish Records etc.
Sheila gave me her email address on this site but the moderators didn't like it. After a couple more "posts" I should be able to sen a personal message to you via rootschat and we can talk.
It's really exciting. I have three cousins on my mother's side but the Jackson's have been a closed book except for a few vague memories of Aunty Josie and Aunty Betty and even vaguer memories of granddad, Fred and Annie. It seems that there are many cousins out there in the Jackson's family.
By the way, you mentioned Susan. She went to the Slade where she met her husband Joe Keys. They moved to Southern Ireland and made a living out of their painting. She died last year in the prime of her artistic creativity. They have a web site I'm sure and I'll see if I can get it for you.
