I have an ancestor who immigrated from Malaya to Australia (Fremantle) in 1940 and died in West Perth in 1949 at age 60. I know much about his early life already but hope to find his Occupation while in Australia. He was unmarried, may not have owned property, and may have been a teacher there. At some point he lived at Como, and at Middleton Beach (in 1942 when he joined the Volunteer Defence Corps), before he last moved to 70 King’s Park-road, West Perth. He was almost always referred to with his middle name or initial; James Benjamin Carr, James B Carr, or Jas B Carr. I would appreciate any suggestions as to where to look for occupation information.

Hi Sue,
The electoral rolls give occupations, but I'm not sure what year they are available up to. 1954 was the latest I could access when I had a subscription to one of the subscription sites. Unfortunately I don't have one at the moment.
There will be people on RC with access to the electoral rolls who I'm sure will help you.
good luck,
Alison ;D

Hello Sue
The 1943 electoral roll shows him as 'retired' of Middleton Beach - not much help re occupation, I'm afraid! I haven't found him on any other rolls.
There are also a couple of mentions of him in the newspapers (again, no occupation given):

Thanks so much for checking the electoral rolls. If he was indicated as retired in 1943, he may never have worked at all in Australia. I've seen the Trove references thanks.

Sue,
You could contact the National Archives and find out if you can get a copy of his WW2 enlistment records, hopefully his occupation might be on that record.
I did this recently and the service was excellent, I did have to pay a fee and it did take a few weeks after I completed the application form. My records were for my father and I don't know how what the requirements are if the person is not related.
To make contact log onto the following site.
