born 8/10/1878 St Austell District son of Richard Kendall and Edna Best. Have located a possible sighting for him in Seattle, Washington by virtue of Naturalization papers in 1911. but I cant see the image. Can anyone provide any further info.
Does he marry?
any children?
Have been looking for his dad for some time a Master Mason from Cornwall. Edna his mum says she is a widow in 1901. in 1881 the family is in London and Richard vanishes after that, I cannot locate a death entry that matches his age so I wonder if Edward John goes to USA to be with dad.
Richard is born 1850 St Enoder, Cornwall.

It looks as though Minnie Kendall married Harry Herbert Foster in Vancouver, BC in 1910.
Hope this link works...

I can look up the marriage registration if you're interested in a transcription.
So this would be the contact Mrs. H.H. Foster on the WW2 draft card who would always know his whereabouts.

Minnie Best Foster, w/o Harry Herbert Foster and d/o Richard Kendall and Edna Best, died in Victoria, BC on June 7, 1951. Harry predeceased her.
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0bba/
Harry Foster, age 30, was one of the roomers with the family on the 1910 Census.
I can do a look-up of this death registration also if you're interested. It may be a couple of weeks though.

Harry Herbert Foster served in the CEF during WW1. You can view his attestation papers (2 pages) at this site.

In the US Naturalization records of the Superior Court, King County, Washington, there is a Declaration of Intention that Harry Herbert Foster signed on January 17, 1910. He says he is a carpenter, born on August 20, 1879 in Little Boakum, England. At the time of this document, he is residing at 303 - 1st W., Seattle. He says he arrived at the Port of Seattle aboard the Tinequois (?) on or about January 28, 1909. His last foreign residence was Vancouver, BC.

Is that normal for someone born in Surrey England moving to Canada then crossing over to USA being naturalized and then joining up in WW1 in the Canadian army?
Barry
-
I don't know if it's "normal" but it certainly did happen. Perhaps the job opportunities were better in BC (more building taking place) so that drew him back to Canada. With Seattle and Vancouver being so close together, I think there was a lot of back and forth.
In the early 1900s, my grandfather used to regularly go back and forth between the 2 countries. He told my sister once that when things "dried up" in Canada, he would head to the US and liked to work in saloons and travel around. I think I've found him on the 1900 US Census working as a barman in a saloon in Oregon, but he's back with his family in Saskatchewan for the 1901 Canada Census. By sheer coincidence, I found the marriage of this grandfather to my grandmother (an emigrant from the UK) in Spokane, Washington in 1913, but they are in Lytton, BC, for my father's birth in 1914 and back to Saskatchewan by the 1920s. He was a carpenter so could pick up jobs in that trade. He was a bit of a wanderer in his younger years.
I don't think we know if Harry ever did get naturalized in the US....the documents were an intention of naturalization. I just looked at the 1910 US Census again and see that the Harry Foster rooming with the Kendalls is shown as being born in Sweden as were his parents ??? I think it is far too coincidental for this not to be the "Harry Foster" who marries Minnie. I am anxious to check the marriage registration now to see what the POB states on there. Perhaps, Harry was a bit of a story-teller!!

I have a few of Scottish ancestors who lived in Massachusetts, but joined the Canadian army during WWI. Canada entered the war before the US, so maybe they viewed it as joining up to fight for their original homeland?

Thanks Barry for giving me this link. I'm sure that Jim Best will be happy with this info.

Hi to all,
You did a wonderful job on this research. I am looking for Anthony Francis Kendall born 1888 at Inglewood New Jersey.
His Father was William Kendall born 1855 St Enoder. William was a railway tunnel miner in Cornwall and came to the USA to work on the Hudson Railway Tunnel linking New Jersey to New York. This project was delayed because of funding and William returned to England with son Anthony and Newly married wife Catherine Hernan. I don't know if she is the birth mother.
Anthony Francis marrried Sarah Cooksey at Rotherham, England and had three children. During wwI he was an ambulance driver. After the war he came home to a broken marriage and immigrated to Canada in 1919. The passenger list indicates that his profession in England was ACROBAT but he was heading to River Hebert, Nova Scotia to work as a mechanic. His Father William had migrated to Canada in 1914 to River Hebert but before 1919 had moved out to Winnipeg, Manitoba. I suppect that Anthony would have gone out west but he seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth after his 1919 arrival in Canada.
I would reaaly love to trace him and also find out who his birth mother was..
I really would appreciate any info you might be able to find.
Thanks

might be better Wayne if you asked a moderator to move this post to the Canadian boards and to start a new thread. If you arent sure one of us can ask a mod for you.
Barry
-
If you're looking for information about William & Anthony's life in the US, then we can either carry on here or I can spin your post off to a different thread. (If there are any census records, vital records, etc., from the US that you already have for them, let us know, so we don't duplicate what you already have.)
Since you're also looking to find Anthony in Canada, it might be best to start a new thread on the Canada board and mention that you also have a thread on the US board looking into the earlier part of his life.

shelley Wayne is a newbie I will email him and ask him to get in touch.
Barry

Hi,
I did all the research I could in Canada with no trace. I suspect Anthony Francis went to the US as his step brother Sydney was living in Chicago at the time. I have found border crossings to Winnipeg travelling from Chicago for both Sydney and William in the late 20'. Sydney died in Chicago and buried in Winnipeg.
That is why I posted on this link. Also his father William would have been Richard's cousin as he was the son of Francis, brother of Edward who was Richard's father.
Same family
