Hi Lou,

I was in St. Joseph's orphanage tivoli road for 3 years, from 1959 to 1962.  I remember names and events that took place at that time.  I should be pleased to let you have the information to help your mum.

Dear Lou,

I'm so sorry that I was late in replying to your request for information, I only discovered this site recently.  It's heartbreaking to hear that your mum has passed away. I hope she had a peaceful end and a happier life after the orphanage.

Best wishes.

Is there anywhere I can write to about this orphanage. My grandmother's two sisters were sent there in 1915 aged seven and three. I would like to find out where they went/ were they adopted, as I have since found one of their daughters (who didn't know she had even been to an orphanage).
Thanks.

Hello Everyone,

I was resident in this orphanage in the late 1950s and early 1960s.  It consisted of a convent, orphanage, day school and various businesses run by the nuns of The Daughters of the Heart of Mary, and staffed by the children (unpaid).  They later sold up and moved to Wimpledon London, U.K.  the convent and orphanage were demolished and a medical facility now stands in their place.  The address for them in Wimbledon is Edge Hill, London SW19 and the telephone no. +442089460305. If you require any further information I will be happy to supply it.

That should read Wimbledon not Wimpledon.  Suzy

I'm very new to this researching and not exactly sure where to start.  I was born 1959 in Donnybrooke (?) Dublin, Ireland.  My understanding is that I was taken as an infant and sent either to St. Josephs Orphanage or Magdalene Laundries (?).  I was adopted in 1960 or 1961 and raised in the United States.  My given name at birth was *(not sure of the correct spellings).  I am trying to locate my biological parents and would love to know if I have any siblings or other relatives in Ireland.  I recently went to a well known and respected psychic in the Cincinnati, Ohio USA area and he told me that my biological fathers name could possibly be Tony.  He did say that he is no longer living.  He mentioned that my biological mother is still living and that I have a sister.  If anyone can help me with my research I would be forever grateful.

John,
When I enquired about my great aunt who was adopted, I was given the following to contact:
The archivist, st joseph's, Tivoli road, dun Laoghaire, Dublin, Ireland.
Also for fostering / adoption: Tusla child and family agency, information and teaching service, 2nd floor, units 4/5 nexus building, banchardstown, corporate park, ballycoolin, Dublin 15, Ireland.
If they can't help, they may be able to point you in the direction of others who can, maybe?
Best of luck in your search.

Hi

im sure it has been a few years since this post.

my mum and aunt were in a 'orphanage' in dun laoghaire in 1957- 1960-62. they called in an orphanage but i think it was more of a boarding school. it was run by nuns, in dun laoghiare in the 1950's. My mum and aunt remember it being a magical place and loved it, they have been back about 10 years ago , but all of the nuns have passed on, as well as all of thier memories and stories.

im hopefully looking for some photos of this time, or an email address that i can contact them on,or home address so i can discuss if they have any archives of this time.

any information would be much appreciated

thanks

Kara

Hello, I am actually searching for our half sister. She was born Jan 1951 and then likely (we have been told) fostered out or in St Joseph's. We have just learned this is a possibility so I am trying to find out more. Her name was Caroline Conway

It is possible my mother Kitty Lyons was in the St Josephs back in the 1930's - possibly with 2 siblings.

Is anyone still reading this I wonder.

I was a guest, along with my two sisters around 1964.  We stayed in the guest house and were looked after extremely well.  I wondered at the time why we were not invited to the orphanage to meet the children as we were just kids ourselves.

If anyone is reading this, I'll continue.....

@Angela Cullen, very interested in you continuing.  My wife was adopted  in 1964 "from Dun Laoghaire" according to her Father, via the agency in Haddington Road.
