Title: Annie Dickens
Post by: goody66 on Thursday 13 January 11 09:40 GMT (UK)
I have a photograph of my mum and me with Annie Dickens (of Charles).
It was taken in about 1982, when I was 16.
Annie lived in Hereford at the time, and would have been about 70-80 years old.
I have tried to trace the family tree - but nothing mentions this particular Annie Dickens.
Any advice would be great

Thank you

Welcome to Rootschat Goody - and what a needle in a haystack you have just presented us with  ;)

Do you happen to know if Annie was married?

There is a death for an Annie Elizabeth Dickens in Hereford in Dec 1998, aged 101!  Birthdate 29 Apr 1897

Hello there

I am not sure if she was married - but I think not.

How did you find that info :)

I was not able to find anything - but that sounds like it could be her

Ancestry have the BMD indexes up to 2005, and so she was on there - no great magic involved  ;)

Do you know anything of her life - where she came from etc, because if you want to look at her family then I think we may need a few more clues!  Obviously if you are serious about tracing her history, then the death cert will be the way forward.  If she didn't marry or have children then possibly the person registering her death was a nursing home manager or neighbour etc

I am sorry - I do not have much information.

I just know that she is related through my mum/granddads side.

Mum, dad and I went to visit Annie in Hereford in 1982, and that is all I know really.

I wish I knew more

Are your Mum/Grandad still around to find out if they know any more about Annie's origins?

Also, it might be worth going to Hereford archives and seeing if there is anything in the Hereford Times about her 100th birthday; it's still uncommon enough to make these sorts of events newsworthy (especially in Hereford where last week the whole of the front page was dedicated to the story of a couple who also happen to be called Will and Kate, and who also happened to get engaged  ::)  Slow news week or what!)

Mum and grandad are no longer here   :(

I will look into the Hereford Times - thank you for that

Would you like to see the photo of me with Annie?

Sorry to hear about your mum and grandad.  I take it you have traced your grandad's tree back and there is no obvious signs of Annie there?

The million dollar question as to which site is best!  It's horses for courses I'm afraid!  Depending upon where you are, you might find that your local library offers free access to Ancestry library edition, so if you are able to get to your library on a regular basis then that might suit.  Ancestry and possibly Find my past offer 14 day free trials for which you have to give your credit card details but providing you cancel before the time is up you wont get charged.

If you have ancestors in Scotland, then scotlandspeople is really the only site that will help.

Depending on the counties/countries of your research there are several free sites around as well.  freebmd is invaluable especially pre 1930, and the familysearch beta site is good too.

If you want, we can have a quick look at your grandad's tree now (just enough to see if we can slot Annie in, without going too far back to spoil it for you doing it yourself!)

Thank you for all of the info

I have emailed my Aunt - to see if she can come up with anything.

In the meantime - I will try to get those certificates

To bring the thread up to speed: through PMs (due the recent nature of the events), the link to the Dickens family has been established via the marriage of Frank Bliss and Edith Kate Dickens in 1899

21 May 1899 St Mary, Willesden
Frank Bliss / 21 / bachelor / painter / 46 Brownlow Road / Mathew Bliss / Painter
Edith Kate Dickens / 19 / spinster / 46 Brownlow Road / John Dickens / labourer

The 1911 census gives birth places for both of these people as Stewkley, Bucks.

I suspect that Annie Dickens was born Jun qtr 1898 Wandsworth 1 d 609, and appears on the 1901 census with her grandparents in Great Brickhill, Bucks:
THomas Dickens  Head  Mar  64  Labourer  bn Stewkley
Jane Dickens  Wife  Mar  66  bn Gt Bricknell
Chas Dickens  son  single  27  Labourer  bn Gt Bricknell
Thomas Dickens  gson  15  bn London
Annie Dickens  gdau  3  bn London

continued from above, cos I ran out of room!

However, at the moment, I can't find who the parents of Annie were and nor can I find Edith on any census other than the 1911

Which bits are you struggling with?

Don't feel you can't ask for help at any point - we're all pretty friendly at RC, and know that when you are starting out on something new, it can feel that everyone else knows what they are doing except you.  Which is completely daft cos I certainly learn something everyday from here!

Head = head of the household.  All the relationships are linked to him, so for example dau = daughter, gson = grandson

Fan/Tom is the name of the boarder.  It is rather mangled, so Fan and Tom are my best guesses as to what is written

The reference (RG13 etc) shows whereabouts within the census you can find this entry, so anyone else who wishes to look it up can do so.  Censuses were taken every 10 years from 1841, and apart from 1841 and 1851 have different codes.  HO107 were 1841 and 1851, RG9-1861, RG10 - 1871, RG11 - 1881, RG12 - 1891, RG13 - 1901

Hope that helps

Looks like there are a couple of other RCs who have Dickins/Dickens from Stewkley http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,374550.0.html
