Hi, is any one able to help with look ups for Queensland Railway employees 1910-1920's?
Many Thanks
Our thoughts are with the people in Queensland at this terrible time.
-
Sue,
Any names you looking for?
Gerry

Yes, just the one person
John or Jack L'Estrange. Should be after 1911.
Thanks

Sue,
Sorry I can't help you with any Railway info for Jack/John L'Estrange but someone may have handy access to the Qld Railways Employees Index 1889-1940. I could probably check it for you next week if someone doesn't do so in the mean time when I visit the QFHS which I'm a member of.
The earliest record I can see is for a John Henderson L'Estrange on the 1913 Queensland Electoral Roll at Windor Rd Redhill as a miner.
There is a fair amount of info on the L'Estrange surname in Queensland if you need it.

Thanks. I have a fair amount of info on the L'Estrange family of Brisbane, I am a descendant of a brother who didn't go to Australia. We would like to confirm or discount whether John Henderson L'Estrange worked for the Queensland Railways so a look up of these records when someone is able to would be great.
That will be him in 1913 on the electoral roll. Some family understand he worked for the railways in explosives but I have an article in 1922 when a John L'Estrange appeared as a witness in a case in the arbitration court for the Redbank Colliery so may be he worked in the mines in explosives not the railways. We have a possible death for him in 1925 but death cert has no details of parents, spouse, children and age is well out. Death was at Kingaroy Hospital. He was estranged from his family.
Thanks
-
Hello
The Queensland Railways Index does not show any L'estrange employees. The 1913 electoral roll shows John Henderson L'Estrange as a miner of Windsor Rd Red Hill which is a suburb of Brisbane. Not a lot of mining around there but Ipswich a near by city & the surrounding areas were very important mining areas. A huge amount of this area is today under water with massive floods. The death you mentioned shows Jack L'Estrange & the absence of details would be because the informant did not know any details about him - could be explained by his estrangement from his family & the hospital not having any real details on him.
Cheers Pauline

Thanks Pok. I have found another reference to the John L'Estrange mentioned in the arbitration court hearing in 1922, an article in 1928 about the explosion at Redbank Colliery which killed the managing director J P Lestrange and two others. I have found his death under John Paul L'Strange on the Queensland BDM with different parents so not our John Henderson L'Estrange, but ours appears to have been working as a miner in 1913.
Is anyone able to check whether John Henderson L'Estrange appears on any further electoral rolls?
Thanks
-
Hi
John Henderson L'Estrange is not on Queensland electoral rolls for 1903, 1922 or 1934. On his marriage record 1895 he has an extra name of William.
Might be worth looking at other states as it is strange he was only on 1 electoral roll.

Hi Aussie1947
When you visit QFHS could you do me a favour and see what information you can find on - Warren, Charles T. 1 May 1899 Southern Division, Locomotive Branch Cleaner, he is my Grandfather and I am trying to find his place of birth and names of parents. I hope this is not too much trouble. Thanks

Thanks so much, but that is not the Charles Warren I am trying to find. I have had a posting on Rootschat previously and everyone had been wonderfully helpful but I still cannot find where Charles Warren was born.
I am sure this is the Charles Warren I am looking for -
Name Date Branch Position Remuneration Year Volume Page
Warren, Charles T. 1 May 1899 Southern Division, Locomotive Branch Cleaner 2 shillings 6 pence per day 1899 3 70
http://fhr.slq.qld.gov.au/qldrail/names_w.htm
I am hoping there is more information on him.
I know he lived in Toowoomba and was working on the Railways & then was transferred to Thulimbah between Dalveen and Glen Aplin (where engines were filled with water).
He was married to Constance Baldwin and was born on 12-1-1872 or 1871 and died 5-12-1960.
Hoping you can help and thanks for your assistance.

I was down the wrong track with the wrong Charles Warren. The Charles Thomas Warren I was looking at was also a railway man but not yours, he died suddenly while on duty on a train in 1935.
For your Charles Warren who married Constance Baldwin I see there is electoral roll information for Constance Lillie and Thomas Warren which you probably already have.
I'll see if I can get any information and get back.

Just a random thought about Qld Rail employees - for a long time I was stumped trying to find my wife's ancestor - an engine driver from Qld. Turns out he wasn't employed by Qld Rail but drove a cane train on a sugar plantation in Qld. Mining companies today have their own rail networks - don't know about Qld at that time, but could JH have been a miner and also involved in rail without being with Qld rail?

sorry to be a bit random on this thread but do similar records exist for Victorian rail?

cma,
I believe that they once gazetted the names of State Government Railway employees. What name or names are you looking for.
Gerry
-
james davoren casey - around 1890 & on I think as he moved to Williamstown Vic after the death of his wife in 1890. He was apparently a rail employee.
don't want to hijack suechris's thread so should I start a new one?
cma

Probably a good move to start a new thread.

will do but not today - i'm hot on the trail of the other side of the family at the moment & have to learn to focus i think :) I was just browsing my unread posts when I saw suechris's topic heading & it started me thinking.

I had a quick search and in 1890 there were a couple of James Casey Railway employees with no middle names though.

thanks Gerry - I'll have to do a search... so much for focus!
