Title: Rented ior owned
Post by: Whitley101 on Wednesday 12 January 11 09:52 GMT (UK)
Good morning

Does anyone know if it is possible for me to find out if the bakery at 30 Ormond street B'ham where my grandparents ( Thomas & Hannah Emery) lived and worked was owned or rented by them?

It is possible to get ownership details/ details of deeds for any property from the Land Registry website for a small fee - it might be worth doing a search on there.

land registry didn't come in to being until the late 1920's, so not sure they would have details of who owned a property.

The "doomesday" books, which was a survey of the whole of the country in 1910 ish would give you the name of the owner of the house, the name of the persons living in the house, the ratable value and then the books tie in with scheduals and maps giving further information which can be interesting.

You need to contact Birmingham record office to see what they hold. It would giuve you an idea of least how much the property was worth and the layout

As you've got a specific address, it might be worth contacting the Archives people at Birmingham City Lbrary and ask them if they have a relevant Rate Book for that address. In the rate books I've looked at, it gives the occupier (usually the head of the household) and the owner. It also gives how much they pay in rates, which can be interesting.

If they owned it then there is likely to be a will.  Worth looking for that.
