Hi everyone,
I am trying to help a friend find out about her Grt Grandfather's family.
Charles Sylvester Bullen born we think about 1877 Liverpool. Had half dozen children but we can find no record of his wife. We think he founded some sort of health care company Stomacare?
Found some old photos on the web (that we already had originals of - with nothing on the back of them). He seems very well to do in the pics - though wife is nowhere to be seen in many photos.
I am mystified why I can find no family trees, and nothing on web except for Stomacare info. if family so large and he obviously well known in area.
Son Joseph Henry Bullen is the line, with Lil, Sylvie, another Jo as siblings.
Tried Free BMD and Family Search and Ancestry searches will little result.
Thanks for anyone that can steer me where to look.
Marie

Would this be him in 1901?

Hi Marie
According to FreeBMD there was a birth of a Joseph Henry Bullen registered in Sep(qtr) 1903 in Liverpool.
Finding the family in the 1911 census will tell you how long they have been married, which may help.
According to the 1911 Directory –
Bullen, Chas S - truss surgical instrument and artifical limb manufctr. 93 Mount Pleasant – Tel: 2197 Royal.
WW1 would have brought in a lot of business. He was still there in 1938.

By the time of the 1911 census, Charles Sylvester is a widower - which explains why you can't find a wife.
He has 5 children with him.
Potential marriage:
September qtr 1902, West Derby, Vol 8b, page 928
Bullen, Charles Sylvester to either
Brown, Elizabeth Ann or
Lynch, Mary Frances
-
The 1901 census entry may be incorrect (unless his then wife died) as his marriage is on FreeBMD in Sep(qtr) 1902 in West Derby, either to Elizabeth Ann Brown or Mary Frances Lynch

Hi,
1881 Census has the family at 68 Yew Tree Road, Walton -
Joseph Bullen - 39 - Financial Agent
Catherine Bullen - age 37
Mary C A Bullen - age 15
Josephine Bullen- age 14
Joseph Bullen - age 11
Mary W Bullen - age 6
Austin Bullen - age 5
Charles S Bullen - age 4

Hi,
1891 Census has the family at 27 Erskine Street, West Derby with 2 additional girls at home -
Elizabeth and Jane (both age 18 - twins?). Joseph and Mary C A seem to have flown the nest.
Austin died in 1881 age 6.
Head of the family Joseph is described as an Estate Agent.

Wow - all in a few hours...Thank you all so very much for your time and know-how.
So Charles S Bullen (1877 - ) married Mary F Lynch (abt 1877 – 1911) in
In 1881 he was 68 Yew Tree Road, Walton-On-Hill, Lancashire
1891 with parents at 27 Erskine St. West Derby, Lancashire,
In March 1901 with parents at 50 Eastbourne St., Everton, Lancashire, as a Surgical Instrument Maker
In Sept 1902 he married Mary F Lynch (abt 1877 – 1911) in Lancashire.
They have:
Joseph Henry Bullen in 1903
Francis Joseph Bullen in 1911
By 1911 he was widowed and living in 93 mount Pleasant, Liverpool with 4 males and 5 females, still as a Truss Surgical Instrument and Artifical Limb Manufactr.
Km1971
Where did you find that Charles S Bullen in 1938, he was still truss surgical instrument and artifical limb manufctr. 93 Mount Pleasant?
KGarrad
Where did you see that he is a widower? I saw the brief 1911 census and the one I saw says 4 males and 5 females living in house….how did you get more info…is there another 1911 source I should be looking at…I was just going via the Ancestry Census list that says 1911 England Census Summary Books
For anyone interested, these are the copies of our photos on below site but unable to contact person who loaded. Lil, Sylvie, Jo etc are names we know but can’t work out where they go.

So I will look on Genes to see if I can see if I can find any other children of Charles S Bullen and wife Mary between 1903 and 1911. I think there are another 3 or 4 in there to find but obviously can’t use England census info. I will go through Bullen births on the fantastic Lancashire BMD listed – thanks for that link.
So many thanks,
Marie

I subscribe to FindMyPast, and have the 1911 census subscription.
So, I get to look at the proper census info - but (of course!) I can't reveal much, due to copyright reasons.
I thought it was safe to tell you he was a widower.
The latest child was registerd in March quarter 1911 (as others have said), and I would guess that his wife died in childbirth, as the census was taken on 2nd April 1911.

Hi Marie,
I may be able more information to the story and a further picture of the family! A relative of mine told me that he had an aunt called Jo (Josephine) Bullen, whose family had shops and made artificial limbs and that she had three children, Winifred, Lizzie and Josephine and that one his aunts brother's in law married someone called Sylvia. I have a picture from an old album which I was never able to identify and now, thanks to your photos, I see it is Charles Sylvester Bullen with his wife and three of their young children. I remember that the photo gave the names and ages of the children but I don't have access to the album at present and only remember that one is called Harry. They are clearly the same family as in my album. The maiden name of the aunt has to have been either 'Williams' or more likely 'McArdle'.
I always thought that she must have been a McArdle aunt but now I am not sure. The story might have got a bit distorted over the years. Can you see a link to a McArdle or Williams marriage?
Fiona,
Germany.

Hi Ladyhawk!
I didn't have all that information. It is really great. Now I have a good lead on the McArdle connection and can fit together slightly garbled story on the relationships. How did you get it together so fast? That makes a lot clear to me. The uncle of my relative was Jo and the aunt Catherina (McArdle) Bullen. Catharina must have had a brother Henry and a sister MarieAnne and a further sister Elizabeth (Lissie) whose married name was Moynagh if I now have the relationships straight. I will have to try to find the parents to be sure.
Many thanks for the information on the posts and the personal messages. I was just wondering how to send a personal message in this system when I read your reply... Perfect timing on your part.
Kind regards,
Fiona.

Hi Fiona,
Marie has been very helpful in setting up our family tree. It is a beautiful photo of the Bullen family you have posted. In fact it is very special as I think it is the only photo we have of Mary Francis Bullen (nee Lynch). She would have been my great grandmother.Joseph Henry(known as Harry) was my grandfather. He died when I was about four. We have a few McArdles in the family tree. I would be happy to exchange info with you. I am new to rootschat so hope this ends up in the right place.
Thanks also to Ladyhawk and others who have helped along the way.
