Hello,
I have been doing this family tree research for a while, and just thought I would put this out there and see if anything comes back.
I am desperately looking for information on Matthew Clough- the surname may also be spelt as Cleugh. The records flitter between the two names.
He was born around 1770-1778 in Northumberland, UK, it was likely that he was born in Longbenton. He married Phyllis Parkin, who was the daughter to George Parkin and Isabel Crone.
I believe they had 5 children together:
John Clough B 1801-1881
George Clough B: 1803-1877
Mary Clough B: 1805
Matthew Clough B: 1807-1878 (my direct line)
Isabel-Ann Clough B: 1811-1812
Matthew died in 1811, though I cannot find the place nor the reason why. His wife remarried a couple of years later to a man called John Cambell, who she had more children with. She lived a very long life.
I am only assuming Matthew was born in Northumberland- this is why I would like to find out more information, to see if he was in fact an immigrant from Europe.
I would appreciate anybody with any information, or any links to my own family to contact me. It would be incredible if you could, who knows what we will find out from each other.
I hope to hear back soon,
Jemilla Russell-Clough

Do you know where the children were born, and do you have baptism details for them?
If any were baptised in County Durham or Northumberland, then they were in the period when Shute Barrington was Bishop of Durham, and baptisms held a lot more useful information including the father's birthplace and the mother's birthplace, and sometimes her (the mother's) father's name.

Hi Colin,
Thank you for the advice, no I dont know where the children were born... I will concentrate on finding where my 4x gt granddad was born then go from there. I havent been able to find a baptism record yet either for any of them.
However I do know that there were most likely to be born in Northumberland- this is where their Mother was born also.
Thanks again,
Jemilla

Well done Tony, nice finds.
I have had a quick check of the BT's on Familysearch and found the first baptism. (Image 142 of 673 for Longbenton Northumberland)
George Cleugh born Oct 25th 1803 bapt Jan 29th (1804), 1st s. of Mattw Cleugh Native of St Andrew's, by his wife Phillis Parkin Native of this Parish.
I would assume St Andrew's is Newcastle upon Tyne and those records are also available.

Hello,
My link to Matthew Cleugh is this:
Matthew (1779 -1811) married Phyllis Parkin
Their son Matthew (1807) married Elizabeth Hunter....
Their son Matthew (1836) married Francis William Patterson...
Their son William (1874) married Jane Bland...
Their son William John Bland Clough (1898) married Catherine Ann Evans...
Their son (my Granddad) is called George Evans Clough (1930), he married Beatrice Annie Forster and had 3 children:
Nancy Evans Clough (1956)
Alison Clough (1958)
George Evans Clough (1962)
Alison Clough is my mother...
How are you related to Matthew? How much do you know about him? I havent been able to get any more information back on him, I have started thinking all sorts, like he may have been an imigrant to the country; as i have been able to find out about phyllis but not him.
This is exciting, we are most probably related!
I hope to hear from you soon,
Jemilla Russell-Clough

Hello Jemilla,
In your introductory posting you stated, referring to Matthew,
“He was born around 1770-1778 in Northumberland, UK, it was likely that he was born in Longbenton. He married Phyllis Parkin, who was the daughter to George Parkin and Isabel Crone.
I believe they had 5 children together:
John Clough B 1801-1881
George Clough B: 1803-1877
Mary Clough B: 1805
Matthew Clough B: 1807-1878 (my direct line)
Isabel-Ann Clough B: 1811-1812”
Well firstly I only have four children. I suppose, rather puritanically, I have accepted George as their eldest son. Matthew baptised 25th February 1770, married Phillis Parkin, baptised 26th December 1779, on the 21st of February 1803 at St Bartholomew’s Church, Longbenton. I believe there is a significance that nine month later on the 25th October 1803 George was born. (He was baptised 29th January 1804.)
When Matthew died 14th August 1811 he was said to be a Pitman of Benton Colliery. Isabel Ann was christened on the day Matthew was buried.
I am down from George and can take you two further generations back.
