Title: Iron Masters - Can anyone date please
Post by: cheshiremog on Monday 10 January 11 00:34 GMT (UK)
Thought to be the gaffers of Riddings, Derbyshire Ironworks owned by James Oakes & Co
If anyone could date by the costume it would be appreciated
Mog

Hi Mog, if you have the original could we see the whole thing in colour please, including the outer corners of the mount?

Cheers,
China

Hi China

No Sorry - I have never seen the original - this is just a copy that was passed to me - I have no idea where the original may be

Sorry Mog, without seeing the original I don't have a clue...why don't you PM jim1 and see what he says? I'm not very good at men's clothing and of course they didn't change very rapidly.

Cheers,
China

We can safely say that it was before electric razors had been invented.         ;D

If I had to use a cut-throat razor I'd grow a beard as well.
1880's I would say.

Someone must have told the guy on the right that it was dress down Friday.

OK. Grandad's put his hat away for another year.
The chap on the right's trying to bring back the 1870's rustic look.

It was the days before they had invented the word "glass ceiling"

James Oakes died 1867 but his brother Charles b.1826 was also involved in the business as were 3 sons of the family.
James b. c.1859;George b.c.1862 & Charles b.c.1863.So if it's them in the middle of this photo it would have to be late 1880's-1890's.

I don't claim any specialist knowledge but they do have a late Victorian 'look', so I'd agree with 1880s/90s

Mike.

I'm certainly no authority but the photo brought to my mind the one below.
This was taken in NZ in 1910. (Maybe we were decades behind the rest of the world but to my untrained eye the attire appears quite similar).
