Title: Bernard Hibbert
Post by: Codd on Sunday 09 January 11 22:46 GMT (UK)
 :) Hi All.

I'm looking for the date of death and/or marriage of my great grandfather Bernard Hibbert.

The last record I can find for him is a passenger list from Canada to England in 1919.  On the passenger list his address is New Whittington, Derbyshire.  He was born in  1860 in Unstone, Derbyshire.

I have another brick wall concerning him but would be grateful right now to find a date for his death.

Thank you,
Codd

Hello there

There's an 81 year old Bernard Hibbert travelling out to Montreal on 14th October 1938 on board the Duchess of Bedford from Liverpool.

He gives his last UK address as 21 Holywell Street,Chesterfield.

Country of future residence Canada.

He is retired, but it doesn't say from what job!

There are also some Canadian WW1 signing up papers for an Abraham Lincoln Hibbert b 5 Aug 1894 who gives his next of kin as his dad as Bernard Hibbert address of Innisfail , Alta. This was dated 13th May 1918.

He is in 1881 RG11; Piece: 3445; Folio: 95; Page: 6 as a single man aged 23 yrs wrongly transcribed as 33yrs)

and then seems to disappear.

He is in  Canadian census, you probably have all this info, with wife Martha and children. His oldest child is perhaps Albert born 1887. This may help you find a marriage.

Thanks Carol!  That gives me something more to go on.  His daughter Mary was my grandmother and they were living in Innisfail in 1916.  I'll follow up on Abraham Lincoln Hibbert.  I know I saw his name on one of the censuses. That probably was his son as Bernard's father's name was Abraham.

It's possible that the 81 yr old Bernard was the same one as his daughter's husband died in 1936 leaving her with several children still at home.

I'm also looking for Bernard's passage to North America.  He left England sometime after the 1881 census and I can't find him on any passenger lists to the US or Canada.  But his daughter, Mary J was born in the USA and came to Canada with her father (Bernard) in 1903 at the age of 16.

Thank you so much for that information!  It is much appreciated :)

Thanks Heywood!  I do have the 1881 information but don't have him in Canada before 1903.

Which census did you find information about he, his wife and son?  His daughter Mary was born in 1887 and she's the only child I've found so far until Carol told me about Abraham Lincoln.

Thank you!! :)

He is on the Manitoba,Saskatchewan and Alberta 1906 census with Martha and lots of kids-again as Barnard Hibbert- arrived in Canada 1903- kids all seemed to have been born in USA.....so maybe he married there?

Will list them later if you like?

Good Morning Carol and Heywood!

Thank you so much for all of this information.  I don't understand why I haven't been able to find this information esp. the census records.  I thought I'd searched for alternate spellings.  I'll go back and try again.

I didn't know Family Search existed.  I'll be using that one more often now! I thought I'd checked all the Hibbert related family trees on Anc.  I'll look again.

I knew Bernard was widowed because he appears on 1916 Manitoba/Saskatchewan/Alberta census living with his daughter and son-in-law in Innisfail with marital status widowed.

Thanks again!

It's a pleasure and now you have the other family members, you may be able to find out more.
At times, Family Search can be a bit difficult to negotiate but in this case- it's great.

I don't know if you saw this in your searches - a bit of a story http://www.middlea.freeserve.co.uk/familyhistory/hibbert.html

good luck

Hello LL,

I'm pleased to meet you.  Bernard Hibbert is my great grandfather.  His daughter Mary married James Wilson.  Their son Allan was my father.

James was much older than Mary and in ill health.  He died in 1936 leaving Mary with several children still at home.  Perhaps that is why Bernard at age 81 came back to Canada.

I didn't have the information about Bernard at Blaine, Washington.  Do you mind if I ask where you found that information so that I can add it to my family tree?

Albert is my great uncle.  So we are cousins:-) Do you live in Canada?

Regards,
Codd

Yes I live in Alberta Canada. And where do you live? I found Bernard's Immigrations ID card that shows his port of entry. It looks like this has was his last trip back from England as he died the spring of 1941. He remarried in England but she never came to Canada, according to my grandma. Grandma says she remembers going to James's funeral at Settler AB.

I live in British Columbia.  I still have cousins in Stettler.  I'm going to visit them in July.  I hope to get more information then about the Wilson side of the family. My Mother left my father when I was 2 and I lost track of that side of the family. One of my cousins is 80 and still very sharp with many memories of my father's (Wilson) family. I keep in touch with her by e-mail.

It's wonderful that you have Bernard's ID card showing port of entry.  I know his first wife Martha died in 1912 but I wasn't aware that he had remarried. I can't believe your Grandma remembers going to my Grandfather's funeral.

I'm having a great deal of trouble tracing James Wilson's family.  I know he was born in Ontario but I don't know where and there are several James Wilsons born in Ontario around that time.  My cousins in Stettler have pictures and other information.

Hi Codd, I'm so glad to meet you.  Bernard married Martha on Jan 1, 1883. I have a copy of their Marriage Certificate and a picture not sure of when it was taken. He died Feb 2, 1941. All the children were born in Ardock, North Dakota.

Bernard came to the US with a family named Holes. He ran the post office at Bac, ND were he meet and married Martha Henderson. He remarried E.E. Dawson. I have a complete list of birth and death dates for all the children.

Look forward to sharring info about the family with you.

Hi Laura,

I'm so pleased to meet you too.  I'm so excited about all of the information you have about Bernard and his family and so pleased that you want to share!

I lost track of Bernard after the 1881 census in England.  I found him again in the 1906 census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta.  Then again in the 1916 census, widowed and living with James and Mary.  I have him going back to England in 1919.  I could find no information about his life in the USA.

I'm sending you a personal e-mail off line.
