As we seem to be on a roll and people have been great at helping me decipher the last couple of problems, lets see how we can do with these 2? Both records are from 1872.
My transcriptions:
(first one)
Joseph Gambrill
Thos Hutchinson-Crumpford
John Henry ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
? ? ? ? ? Strood Agent
(Second one - I can't figure out Frederick's Surname for sure)
Staff of Life
Cooling Street Cliffe
Frederick Scott [Jaott?]
James Batchelor
-
John Henry Spiller, Canonbury Park, Islington.
Alfd .........
hope that helps a bit!
-
Well the first letter of Fred's surname certainly looks like the S in staff and street but I have to agree that second letter looks like an a.But I think Scott, Leofwine.
Could it be Thomas Hutchinson - Crayford?
George.
-
Perhaps Frederick TROTT?

Hi
My suggestions for Alfred:
Alfd Hors??ll Stroud Agent
(Stroud as in the place in Gloucestershire)
I also think Fredrick's surname looks like "Trott"
-
I think the place name after Thos Hutchinson is Crayford.
I can't decipher Alfred's surname either, but I tend towards the place as being Strood (Kent) rather than Stroud (Glos) -- geographically this would be more likely, as it's a lot closer to the other places mentioned.
I agree with Trott as Frederick's surname.

Hi,
I think the same as Fosseway, on the Crayford bit.
I think it is John Henry "Hilton" Canonsbury Park Islington
On the Scott front it looks to me like Trott or Jaott
The other bit looks like, Hosmill/Hasmill or Hosvill/Hasvill.
Best wishes,

What about Ironside for Alfred's surname?
-
Alfred Horswill or Horwill?
-
Thanks for the suggestions, I think it is Thos Hutchinson - Crayford as ther is a Thomas Hutchinson, Carpet Manufacturer at Barns Cray, Crayford in the census.
Following the suggestions and looking at the 1871 census I found an Alfred Horsnaill, town councillor & coal merchant in Strood, so I think that is probably our man. Also found John H Spiller in Canonbury Park, North, Islington, a retired wine merchant, so I think that's another match. :)
Still no luck on Frederick, but I can't find a Fred Jaott (or variant) in the census

Hi folks, it is amazing what you can find just by googling - I am always on the hunt for my HORSNAILL family and guess what pops up.
On your list it is definately Alfred HORSNAILL, Strood, Agent. He is my 3rd great-grandfather.
Hope this helps,
Cheers

Hi again, sorry, but I forgot to ask you where you found this record. I note that you say 1872, but what was it for.

It is part of the Lathe of North Aylesford Licensing records from that year in the Medway City Archives at Strood (and available online through their website). They also have loads of other local online records too if you are looking for relatives in the area.

Thanks for that - I obviously need to dig a bit deeper, the HORSNAILL are one of my main lines. Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.
