Please can you help me find my 2 x g.grandfather John Caldwell; baptised 5th Oct. 1801 Pembridge; son of John Caldwell and Elizabeth Barnett. Married Ann Jones 14 March 1831 Pembridge; they had Eliza(beth) - baptised 21 July 1837 Eardisland. Ann was buried 28 July 1837 Eardisland. John was a cooper at Eliza's Christening (Eardisland). Eliza is with her grandmother Hannah Miles in an alms house in Pembridge in 1841. I can find no concrete evidence of John's whereabouts or death. Eliza went on to marry Anton Nida in Paris in 1859.

I think I have located John Caldwell; he appears as John CAULDEWELL in the Death Index 13th June 1859; he died in St. Martin Hereford City, occupation COOPER. He's aged 68 but born in 1802; if this is correct then where was he in the census' of 1841 & 1851?
Thank you for your help.

Hmm, this is a bit of a difficult one. I cannot seem to find any John Caldwell in Herefordshire with the occupation of cooper in the 1841 or 1851 census.
Although the John Caldwell who died in 1859 has the right occupation, there is a big difference between 1801 and the estimated birth year of 1791 (age 68 in 1859)...
I found a small snippet about this John's death in the paper, but it doesn't add much. It just says that he was a 68-year-old cooper who lived on Saint Martin Street and his death was sudden.

Eliza went on to marry Anton Nida in Paris in 1859.
Does the marriage have any information concerning her father?

There's only this one from Herefordshire in 1841 that I can see listed as an agricultural labourer but no possible wife with him which would fit with yours being widowed by 1841.
John Caldwell 38
William 11
Thos 9
John 7
Don't think this is your chap :-\

Thank you looking. I had also eliminated him.

Hereford Times 16 April 1859 and Hereford Journal 20 April 1859 have reports on "the inquest on the body of John Caldwell, an old man about 68 years of age, a cooper, who lived in Saint Martin Street."

That's the small snippet I mentioned in my post above. It is a shame there is no mention of anything else that could help identify him.
