Hi All
I have Hector Ross McDowall being born in 1906 (WA) to Donald Ross McDowall and Ellen McMullen.
I know that Hector Ross married a Lillian Iris .............
But I can't seem to find a marriage or death for either person.
They were found in Melbourne in the 1949 electoral role.
Can anyone help?

Clair I wonder if Lillian Iris McDOWALL was a relative not Hector Ross's wife....she is not with him in 1954.

Unfortunately marriages only extend to 1942 in Vic and Hector names Nellie [?Ellen] NOK when he enlisted in 1942.

If Hector served overseas he may have married, if indeed he did marry, in the UK. Perhaps his service file may help you. Facility to purchase a copy online

There is a rather nice two storey terrace house at 130 Hambleton Street, Middle Park.
Springvale Botanical Cemetery

Cremated and the ashes have been collected.
His death notice would give you more details.

Did you ever get to the bottom of this? I have been chasing the same question from the MCDOWALL side ...
Where did the info "that Hector Ross married a Lillian Iris" come from?
I had come to the conclusion the most likely scenario is that Lillian is a sibling, born after the family came back to Melbourne [where the birth index closes after 1920] from Perth [where the birth index is available to 1932].
Hector gave his NOK as "Nellie" for his [remarkably short—i.e. 4 weeks] WW2 enlistment. His mother was still alive at the time, so this might indicate he did not yet have a partner? I have put in an access request for his service file at the Archives. But unless the nominal roll is in error as to his date of discharge, it seems extremely unlikely he could have married during such a short enlistment. I cannot find any marriage for him [or for Lillian] in UK [or WA or NSW via index, or anywhere in Aus via Trove] during or after WW2 anyway.
But I note there is still no sign of a cremation like his at Springvale. And no probate.
I have so far failed to find where Hector's mother Nellie MCMULLEN was born. There is no sign of any family of John MCMULLEN & Sarah PALMER [parents in her death registration] in either Victoria or WA. There was, however, an enigmatic connection with Maryborough [presumably Vic?] at the time of Nellie's 1943 death—The Argus (Melbourne), Saturday 1943-02-27, p13: Deaths ... MCDOWALL (nee Nellie McMullen).—A tribute from Maryborough and District F R Association to our esteemed member of the committee, who passed away February 24.—Until the great reunion above. J H Smith, Pres. F J Carlyon, Secty. I can only guess what the "FR Association" was about! But for Middle Park residents, what was the connection to Maryborough sufficient to be on the comittee?
Any snippets of info would be welcome! cheers

You will find that her parents given names are incorrect on her death certificate.
This previous thread will be of help:

Many thanks for that.
I had already concluded the parents given in the death registration were most likely in error for some reason, and that previous thread confirms this, but also mentions the death notice which makes clear that Nellie's children were [just] Jack and Hector, confirming Lillian most likely as a spouse.
But the matter of when & where they married remains, as does what happened to her ...
