Title: JAMES SALKELD + ELIZABETH LOY
Post by: taevs on Wednesday 05 January 11 09:22 GMT (UK)
Hi was just wondering if anybody would be able to give me a bit of help? I have traced my family back as far as James Salkeld, born 1810 who married Elizabeth Loy in 1844. Amongst their children they had a son, Thomas Salkeld, who would have been my ggg grandfather. James and Elizabeth lived in Crosby Ravensworth.

I was just wondering could anybody shed any light on this side of the Salkeld family, and trace them a bit further back?

Thanks in advance!

HI
You might already have this but i found a Death for a James Salkeld on the Ancestry Index with a Birth yr 1810 & death of 1890 West Ward Westmorland. If this is your James there appears to be a Will listed on the England & Wales National Probate Index on Ancestry.

Welcome to Rootschat taeves :)

1841 Census has;
John SALKELD, 65, Tailor, Born in County
Elizabeth, 60, Not born in County
HO107/1162/14/Crosby Ravensworth
There other Salkelds and Loys living nearby

Trouble is John is with Son James in 1851 but James born 1810, is not Married to an Elizabeth :-\

When and where was your Thomas born?

Trish :)

OK, got him born c 1856 and in 1861 Census his Mother Elizabeth born c 1812  is a Landed Prop born Dufton and she is Widowed.
Children;
Isabella, 1839 (born before Marriage)
Agnes, 1846
John, 1849
Elizabeth, 1852
THOMAS 1856

Now James Salkeld does not seem to appear on any Census.
Is that what you have found?

1841 Census
John LOY, 75, Independant
ELIZABETH Loy, 25
Isabella Loy, 3, NOT born in County
Isabella Loy, 1
All others born in County
HO107/1156/18/Dufton

1851 Census we have;
John LOY, 85 (indexed as 35), Landed Proprietor, born Dufton
Elizabeth SALKELD, 30 (38?), Daug, Mar, born Dufton
Isabella Salkeld, 11, Granddaug, Scholar, born Dufton
Agnes Salkeld, 5, Granddaug, born Crosby Ravensworth
John Salkeld, 2, Grandson, born Crosby Ravensworth
Isabella LOY, 12, Granddaug, born Garstang, Lancs
HO107/2440/8/8

1861 Census
Crosby Ravensworth
RG9/3956/91/12
Elizabeth SALKELD, 48, Head, Widow, Landed Prop, born Dufton
Agnes, 15, Daug
John, 12, Son, Scholar
Elizabeth, 9, Daug
THOMAS, 5, Son
All Children born Crosby Ravensworth

Sorry more questions than answers;
Do you have your THOMAS's Birth Cert?
Can you give me his Fathers Occp from Cert?

Do you have the Marriage Cert to show their Ages and Fathers occp's?

Trish :)

Isabella LOY
Christened/Baptised 21 July 1839, Dufton, Westmorland, England
Mother ELIZABETH Loy

Elizabeth LOY,
C/B 22 October 1812, Dufton, Westmorland, England
Parents,
John LOY and Isabella MOSS
(Source Familysearch Pilot)

Most family Trees have James that Married Elizabeth born c 1775.
If this is true then he was probably Married before.

If you dont have the Marriage Cert of James/Elizabeth, it is crucial to your research to purchase it!

I too noted that James didn't appear on the census, which makes him difficult to trace, it has only been through his marriage to Elizabeth and their son I was able to find him. Their son Thomas was born in 1856 and he married a lady named Sarah. In the 1881 census they were living in Normanby, and he was a railway clerk. They had a son Arthur, born 1879 in Yorks, Redcar who married a Mary Jane Salkeld. They in turn had a son James Leo Salkeld who was my great grandfather (he married an Ada Hobbs). James Salkeld seems a bit of a mystery. I don't know his occupation, and have only started research online so don't have certificates etc.

Thank you for all you quick replies and help btw!

Hi taevs,
I would strongly recommend that you get that Marriage Cert as it is the only definite way to confirm your Family Line.
You are extremely lucky as it may be the only one you need :)

You probably have Sarahs name but will post anyhow as others may be searching your Family;
Marriage FreeBMD;
Thomas SALKERD,
Sarah Elizabeth DOBSON, June 1877, Guisbro', 7d 737

1901 Census Arthur is with his In-Laws and Mary Jane in Durham and is down as born 1879, Trimdon, Durham ::)

I now think that I may have found James Parents which would have to be confirmed by his Marriage Cert;

James SALKELD
Christened/Baptised 06 September 1811, Morland, Westmorland, England
Parents THOS (Thomas) SALKELD and AGNES RICHARDSON
(Source Familysearch Pilot)

Now as James and Elizabeth name 2 Children Thomas/Agnes this is a good possibility!

Hi Sharon, I did not know that - I had just looked him up on the 1881 census, but I had a look there at the 1891 one and see what you are talking about. Have you any idea why he would have been looked after by his grandparents in those days?

Trish, I believe there was two James Salkelds born c1810 in the same area, one born to John Salkeld & Elizabeth Thompson, and another to Thomas Salkeld and Agnes Richardson as the 1841 census has two James Salkelds living in Westmorland, so it is working out who is who  :-\

Thanks again!

Have you any idea why James would have been living apart from his wife at the time if he was living with his parents in 1841? Also as he married Elizabeth Loy in 1844 do you believe she was his 2nd wife?

As I said earlier only the Marriage Cert will give you the answer.
I have just set out possibilities although I would go with the one to Thomas and Agnes as the other one is Married to a Mary and with her in all Census entries.

Just because he was with the Parents on Census night does not mean he was living there all the time but as Father was elderly would have helped out. He still managed to spend time with Elizabeth to conceive Children though ;)

There could be many reasons why he was with his grandparents, I have seen it a lot in those days and have many examples in my tree also.

His parents are living in Skipton with children John, Mary Agnes & Thomas H & a sister in Law Mary Jane Steadman (born Great Crosby, Westmorland).

(My Salkelds have not been easy either)

Thanks, I am going to purchase the marriage certificate so I will post what it tells me when it arrives! It's a shame the census doesn't go further back than 1841.

Is there anywhere other than census and IGI I would be able to discover more about James and his parents? I am still confused as he was married in 1841, although he is listed as not marrying Elizabeth until 1844.

Sharon, I thought as Salkeld was an uncommon name it would be quite easy to trace but its proving harder than I thought. I dread to think what my other side of the family will be like as the surname is slightly more common!

ETA - Night Trish, thanks for your help.

My mistake by the way - have just realised the census I am looking at is 1851, not 1841, so Elizabeth may well have been his first wife. Oops!

Actually I also thought that Salkeld was an uncommon name but after a few years researching them I have come to realise the in North England (Westmorland, Cumberland, Durham & Northumberland) it is a very common name. I have a big Salkeld tree but am also stuck and can not get any further back than 1814.

Thomas Salkeld was born in 1855 and christened 30th September 1855, CR and married Sarah Elizabeth Dobson 23 June 1877 at St Peters Church, Redcar, Agnes Salkeld B1845 sister of Thomas married Christopher Liddle in 1872 both the Liddle and Salkeld families moved to the Redcar area. The eldest sons of Thomas & Sarah where Fred Salkeld and Arthur both had very large families Fred married Ellen Maud Carling and they had 9 children and Arthur married Mary Jane Catherine Roach they had 12 Children.
