Tim, I have a friend who lives in Tunbridge Wells - he probably wouldn't be interested in searching the entire grave yard, but if you already have an idea whereabouts your ancestor was buried, there's a fair chance that I could get him to photograph it for you  :)

Tim, my friend has said that he will try to find and photograph the gravestone for you, but can you please clarify that it's the Tunbridge Wells Municipal Cemetary that your ancestor is buried in, and can you also say what year she died ?   Apparently there's more than one cemetary in TW, but the Municipal Cemetary is the biggest.

Hi,

I live in T Wells and would be more than happy to get you a photo or two.

Do you know which one it is? There is a main one and lots of 'old' church cemeteries.

Rob.

Hi Tim,

I had a quick look this afternoon from 3.00pm until 4ish. Getting a bit hard to read some of the head stones in the light as the sun was very low.

Lots of stones missing or very well worn away.

Area B1 looks like its been reclaimed - so I will chase them to see if the head stones were moved elsewhere.

I looked quickly  in areas c3 and c13 but my luck didn't hold out.

It was getting too dark to get to c18 and have a look.

There is an office there open during the week which I think has the register. I will pop in and see if they can help.

I should be that way again next week.

Rob.

It's OK Rob,  I wasn't going, but I've persuaded my friend to help out.   I've emailed him the details, but he's not the fastest in the world at collecting his emails, so two heads would probably be better than one on this  :)

Just to say I live in Tunbridge Wells and whilst indexing a Middlesbrough Cemetery (where I originate from) for Charles Sale, Photographic Resource Project, I have been contacted to find and photograph some graves in Tunbridge Wells Borough Cemetery for someone in Canada.

He has given me the grave numbers which I'll be off to search for over the next week or so.

If you would like me to help at all with your search...I'd be more than happy to help, seeing as I'm going anyway.

best wishes

Julie

Dear Julie,
Hello,thanks for your kind offer!!!

Can you see my information about the location of the gravestones?

I was told that some are missing in that cemetery because of being vandalised.

I do hope some of mine are there,the person who said they were going to look never got back to me.

Thankyou again..............Tim

Hi Tim..yes got the info re your headstones from earlier message...I had already printed off your plan as I didn't have one!! I am looking for quite a few for this gentleman in Canada and one of them is in B1 so I note the comments about it being reclaimed.  I don't know when I'll get there...asap but a lot depends on when I have the car as its too far to walk from where I live. Will do it the first chance I get providing its a nice day..also I didn;t know whether a weekday might be better in case there's an "office" to ask if I'm struggling to find anyone.  I'll definitely do it for you though....if the other person comes back to you before I do...please let me know!   My ancestors are from different parts of the country/world so I would love to have someone help me...so you're more than welcome!!

best wishes

Julie

Hello David: Thanks for your help.There is a map posted on this string of the plot locations if you need it. Also I understand that there isnt someone at the cemetary at all times to guide you around the place so perhaps some prior arrangements are needed in case you need help.

thanks;
i have printed off the map from earlier on this string, and was there a few years ago;
i'm photographing the war graves there, as i have in some 2k other sites, so feel fairly confident;
am just sad that i'm likely to find some/many of thoise you want unmarked (as were my grandparents when i found their resting place near Croydon just a couple of weeks ago);
our share of their legacy was our first tv (back in the 50's) and i am saddened that that was at the cost of a permanent marker for them;
(incidentally they emigrated to Canada in 1913, and then returned to the UK in 1919; am not sure i'll ever know why; 2 others of their brothers went to different parts of Canada and also returned within a handful of years - why???)

I persuaded my friend to go there, but he (rather grudgingly) said that he would do it when he was in the area - he wouldn't make a special trip over there.  When others  volunteered to go, I didn't push my friend any further, sorry  :-\

hi
got to tunbridge wells cemetery but could not see any of the graves you listed; it's a big cemetery, but it's not difficult to find the right section; tracing the way the graves run is tough; lots of stones, especially in B12, but v few numbered anywhere; if one has a LOT of time one could take each query to the (v helpful) office staff, who would do their best to help; i spent an hour or two wandering, but sadly came up with none; i did find a gilbert grave in C4 (sophia d 1914, and her husband), and can email it (using personal as images are large) if you want; also a site pic of section C9; sorry for otherwise failure; david

Dear David,
What can i say but a HUGE thankyou for replying and for spending the time to look for the Graves,
I appreciate your kindness,

I may hopefully come back to the UK in 2013, i will hopefully have time to have a look,

This sounds like one of the cemeteries that needs the headstones photographed, maybe too bigger job.

Thankyou again.....Tim

Hello Endoftheline

Thanks for taking a look for the Gilbert headstone but I must say it was not a productive use of your time. If the graves are not properly marked why didnt you make contact with a member of staff in charge of the cemetary ( as I suggested before)and have them show you where the graves were located. That way their location could have been found and a picture and record of the headstone inscription made (if there was a headstone).At least I would know whether their graves were still marked or not. Was there not someone at the cemetary who could help you?  I guess I will have to hire a photographer in Tunbridge Wells to get me what I want. I have been waiting over a year for this information and I am no further ahead. Very frustrating!!!

Regards...Ed
