Hello Sue
Ages can vary between censuses but your family certainly does have a large disparity :o The biggest gap seems to be between 51 and 61. Have you seen the original 51 entry, or just the transcribed index? I wonder if the family were wrongly transcribed when the index was produced.
I cannot find 1771 James in Fressingfield in 1841, and as yet, the Suffolk 1841 is not indexed I'm afraid. Do you have parish record data for this family because lookups from them are available from the Suffolk Surnames List.

Sue. My mum was in Barnardos homes on two occasions. Do you realise they do keep very good records indeed. The information we got listed all 9 childrens names and ages... The 2 youngest siblings mum didn't even remember but the best thing was it also mentioned her mothers parents stating that they were unable to assist. It told us such wonderful things in the records such as my grandmother had tried to support the children by playing the melodian in the streets. (Mum had blocked this all out -all too painfull for her) The name was quite common and we had no chance of ever finding our Grandmothers family prior to this. The fact that the home made the children use their mothers name in place of Fathers let us know that her parents were probably never married and that is why we had been unable to locate a marriage record. In the absence of a marriage cert (We only had our grandmothers name from mum and siblings birth certs) we were destined never to know anything of this family. Through Barnardos listing the fact that her parents (Names and Town) were unable to help I now have wonderful info on this family. This allowed me to find my granny in 1901 and then trace her back So if you havent already done so I would suggest you contact them and see what the records contain. Kris :D

Hi Sue, I note your interest in Riches. I have been doing some research on the Baldwin family in Catfield, Norfolk and apart from marrying one of the Baldwins (Frank Riches married Emmeline Baldwin) there are many, many Riches buried in the Churchyard of Catfield C of E (now overgrown and defunct as a church). Presumably the records office in Norwich has listings of whose buried there. I haven't actually followed this up as I was after the Baldwins, not the Riches.

Hi Sue,
Not sure if this is your James, aged 65 (don't forget 1841 was rounded to the nearest 5 years) living in the Hoxne hundred which is in the parish of Fressingfield, with a Mary (aged 60), Lydia (15), Benjamin (11) and Sarah ( 8 ).

Hi
I don't know if my family is connected to yours or not. I have a John Riches baptised Fressingfield 1/8/1781 to John and Elizabeth Riches (nee Feveryear). They also had a son called James 18/2/1787.
In 1841 there are two possible James and I havent managed to work out which of these (if any) is the son of John and Elizabeth.
Hoxne
James 50, Bathsheba 50, Mary Ann 12, Rose 25.
Fressingfield
James 65, Mary 60, Lydia 15, Benj 11, Sarah 8
I'm inclined to think it's the second one because the names Lydia and Benjamin are consistently used in Johns family. Also, they are living next door to a William Riches aged 50 which might be their brother baptised in 1785 Fressingfield.

Hi again,
I am not sure but I think that one James (sr) (abt 1791) was the father to the James( jr) (abt 1821) Esther(b.1822) . Possible other children in that family- may have been -Amos(abt 1820) & Benjamin(b.abt 1831)
James(jr) (b. abt 1821)- married Susan ___?- children appear to be Thomas, Mary, Ban, Amos , David, Jane( 1871 & 1881 census)- Hoxne Laxfield
Amos(abt 1820)- married Phoebe _____?
Benjamin( abt 1831) married Mary ____?
Witnesses to Esther Riches & Samuel Ramsey marriage (2nd quarter-1840)- "Father’s names are Edward Ramsey and James Riches. It was signed in the presence of Allen Ramsey and Caroline Cooper. Their marks were crosses X. I have just noticed that Esther was under age. "
In 1901 -shows Esther living with her son Edward -
Name Age
Mary Osborn 14
Allan Ramsey 22
Edith Ramsey 21
Edward Ramsey 50
Esther Ramsey 79
Ethel Ramsey 13
Esther died 23 Dec 1910- 7 Holland rd Ipswich.
What do you think?

Fressingfield parish records show a christening for Henry Riches 1825 son of James & Mary Riches (nee Clarke).
Other siblings Lydia 1823, Mary 1825, Robert 1826, Benjamin 1828 & Sarah 1831.
My guess is that James in the son of John & Lydia Riches (nee Potter m 1804).
John Riches is the eldest son of John Riches & Elizabeth Feveryear.
John & Elizabeth are my 5xggp, I am decended through their son James Riches (1787-1851)
