Title: Wilkins/Dibden Marriage 1837
Post by: feliscatus on Sunday 02 January 11 22:25 GMT (UK)
Background: My husband would like to look up his great great grandparents and by using the verbal information his father gave him before he died, we have established (we think) that Charles Wilkins who married Caroline Dibden 1837 are who we are looking for. We knew that Charles came from Hampshire, and that they were buried in Purlieu or Beaulieu in Dibden. This my husband knows because his father tried to find their graves and visited the cemetry but we dont know which one he visited.

I have found Caroline Dibden marriage using FreeBMD: Vol 8 Page 309 of Oct Nov Dec 1837, and Charles Wilkins is matched to that record. Now I hope to obtain the info of the parents etc if it appears. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am again standing and clapping in admiration for the magic that you and the moderators do for us. My husband is very (in a male understated way) ecstatic with this find. The names confirm with his knowledge & of the places mentioned, esp Millbrook. And, to do the search so late at night for you. Thank you.

I had hoped that the marriage would have been on the new IGI website as fathers names are shown - no such luck!!

There is a Charles Wilkins baptism on the IGI in the right year but I'm wary as it's not specifically in Eling

I've just been checking the 1841 for Eling and have Charles and Caroline with their first 3 children but nobody else called Wilkins on the same page - rather hoped they may be near his parents if still living

Well done. We are still buzzing with the info you first found, so the rest is a bonus. In New Zealand, the family name has continued, i.e. Charles, Edward, William & Thomas continued to be used by the great grand children of Charles. We also found that 'Dibden' has become 'Debden", so the Charles that died in 1996 in NZ was Charles Michael Debden Wilkins. We have enjoyed tracing the origins of the name to the place etc.

Post script: By the way, Barney is very hansome, we have three felines & at one point ten years ago had 5!! The older & only female is "stately" and asleep beside the computer in the sun.

Spot on, Charles has clearly named one of his daughters after his mother - eureka! William and Harriet have to be the same family. I really do need to go and have a coffee, Im loosing the feeling in my legs - we are glued to this unravelling of hubbies family tree like a darn good soap opera.  We have to go and get some air. Big hoorah to you & any felines you may now have.  Even the dogs are now asleep from all the excitement, and the elderly female is not excited because she knew another cat lover would find the info anyway.

Same IGI website has the following christenings in Eling with parents William & Harriet

William 2.7.1820
Harriet 16.6.1822
Patience 29.7.1827
Thomas 18.10.1829
Henry 18.8.1833

Patience is a servant in 1841 aged 13 and so is Harriet aged 20 - both in Eling

This is a submitted IGI entry

William WILKINS    Spouse:  Harriet OSMAN    Marriage:  09 APR 1812   Eling, Hampshire

Have not had coffee yet - but hubby has just seen latest info and said that the name 'Stephen' he has never heard as a 'family' name, but William, Thomas & Edward are very prominant names in the family.

Umm, that lad Thomas is a bit baffling if his age was correct at time of 1851 census, because it would be 2 years out - going by the christening date and census date, two years have disappeared off his life. The rest checks out.

Hello, my grandmother's name was Harriet Maria Foster, the daughter of Charles Debden Wilkins and Maria Swords, born 1874. Does that tie in with your Husbands Family.

Hello. I have just registered with Rootschat and read your message from 2016. Its been ten years since I used Feliscatus UserID and sadly my memory has faded along with the email & password I registered. I couldn't find where to contact someone and ask how to register my new email and password so I started an entirely new account with Rootschat. So I hope you sign in at some time as I can see your reference to Charles Debden and Maria Swords is my husbands Gt Grandfather.
