General query re BDM registration on Hoy. Would the BDMs in 1700/1800's been registered on Hoy or the nearest place on Orkney ie Stromness?
Thanks in advance Ian Clingan

Statutory registration of BDMs only started in Scotland in 1855, so prior to that date there would only be church baptism records, which should have recorded been at the relevant church on Hoy. Can't tell you whether there was a Registrar on Hoy post 1855. No doubt someone will know.

Hoy was a registration district after 1855...........are you looking for anyone in particular?

Hi torilar,
By the looks of it same as you, Clingan/Hacklands etc. Midlothian Clingans - in fact all Scottish Clingan's connected - back to KPD. Includes John Clingan the baker who cleared off to Orkney with family later returning to Leith area after his passing, with one of daughters marrying into the Hacklands.

Ian,
I would direct you to Walt Cursiter's site at http://www.cursiter.com/pages/indices.htm
No Clingans listed but he does have christenings and marriages for some Hacklands in 1700s & 1800s.

Hi Ian
I don't really know much about a connection to Hoy ....as far as I know the Hacklands were from Sandwick but if you have other information I would be grateful for it.
