James Prudhoe was baptised February 25th 1816 at Chester le Street. His Parents were George and Elizabeth Prudhoe.
I have found him in the 1841 census living in Hartlepool with the Emmerson family.
In the 1851 census he is living at Frindsbury, Kent with his wife Mariam, his niece and two workers from his pub.
After this i can find no trace of him or his wife. Any information as to what may have happened to him would be very welcome. Thank you.

i have had a quick look on A* & can't find them on 1861/71. there seem to be a lot of mis transcriptions of the Proudhoe name. do you have the names of any children?

Hello Diddymiller, thank you for your reply and efforts.
I´m afraid that as far as i´m aware up until 1851 James and Mariam had no legitimate children. As you said the name Prudhoe seemed to mis transcribed often and i have tried with various alternatives without any luck. I have searched deaths also without any luck and i´m beginning to think they may have emigrated but to where i have no idea !
I am still trying to piece together the rest of James´s family so there may a clue somewhere in there. James and the Prudhoes are a new line for me to research as he just came into the picture as the named father on a birth certificate of the 1841 birth of the person who i think was my Great x2 Grandfather. Finding him was a four year brickwall and he is no sooner found and he disappears again !

Not sure if this of any help, but criminal records on Ancestry show a James Prudhoe convicted at Lancaster Quarter Sessions on 19 March 1875 of "larceny from the person before convicted of felony". He was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment. I am wondering if the "before convicted of felony" might indicate an earlier prison sentence.

Hello Greensleeves, thank you for your reply and efforts. I´m also not sure if this is the same person, is there any indication as to age ?
The James i am looking for does seem to have been a "colourful" character with many facets so i would not be surprised at all if it was him !
I have received some information from a Rootschatter ( :) thanks P )about James Prudhoe for when he was in Kent and it seems he was there by the summer of 1846 and had metamorphosed from being a Platelayer to an Inspector of works on the railways ! Then in 1850 he was applying for a license for a pub in Frindsbury which was initially refused but granted in 1851.
Then he disappears again !

A burial on FamilySearch. May be your man, given age and occupation.
James Prudhoe, died 29 Nov 1857, buried 30 Nov 1858 (one of these must be wrong). Birdwan, Bengal, India. Inspector of Platelaying, age 41.

Hello Alan,
Apart from WOW.. i don´t really know what to say !
I think given his name, age and occupation this could well be him. How on earth did you find him in India of all places ?
I will try and follow this through and if i get an answer i´ll let you know if it is correct.
Thank you to all Rootschatters for the incredibly quick and useful help on this and special thanks to Alan.
A slightly stunned and grateful
Kabeja.

Alan you are a star 8)
Thank you so much for your time and efforts. Your information i think will help me tremendously. After being stuck for four years at my Great x 2 Grandfather we got a breakthrough three weeks ago by identifying his mother and birth and from that obtained a birth certificate which led to James Prudhoe.
If this is the James that you have found who i have been looking for then i can finish this line of research and move onto the new families which have come from the birth certificate.
What a great start to the new year. Cheers and good luck in your own research.

One last bit of info.
At the Annual Licensing day in Rochester, Kent, in 1850 the Railway Tavern was in the process of being built.
At the next Annual Licensing day, Sat August 30th 1851, James Prudhoe's licensing application was refused.
From "The Era" London, Sept 7, 1851.
"... The Town Clerk (Mr Lewis) on behalf of Mr James Prudhoe, formerly Inspector of Works on the North Kent Railway, and now Beer Retailer, applied for a License for the Railway Tavern, a newly erected house, the property of Sir Henry Meux and Co. ....."
Main opposition was from the landlord of the Canal Tavern a short distance away.
"The Magistrates having consulted. The Mayor said the application was refused."
Might have been enough to drive him back to his previous employment.

Again, thank you Alan.
James Prudhoe seems to have been a bit different from his contemporaries in Chester-le-Street. I suspect he had various reasons to leave first the North East (there was at least one, if not two children he fathered there outside of marriage) and then England. I am now wondering where his wife went to as there seems to be no mention of her in India or in the Arrivals.
All the best.

Not sure whether you already have this - James Prudhoe married Miriam Heyward in 1838 in St Botolphs, London. James' father is George Prudhoe, labourer. Miriam's father is William Laverick, shoemaker.
Meriam was described as a widow. There is a marriage in Stockton in Q1 1838 of Merryman Laverick and James Haywood.

Hi Purp72,
The wedding between James and Miriam in London i did know about but not Miriams original marriage to James Haywood. Thank you very much for this additional information to what you already gave me earlier, really appreciated.
The information keeps coming :) Thanks Rootschatters.

Can anyone put me in touch with Kabeja who, from what I can see, was researching James Prudhoe who died in Burdwan, Bengal, India in 1858. I have an old Bible that belonged to James Prudhoe which was part of his estate and somehow finished up in the Indian Section of the Foreign Office in London. If Kabeja is related to James Prudhoe I would be so pleased so the Bible can be returned to a family descendant.

As moderator can you please forward my message to Kabeja via his last known email address as I would so much like him to see my message and what I have for him if he is related to James Prudhoe.

Hi Little Nell,
I'm around again and have replied to Mendosa. Many thanks for pointing them in my direction.

Just to update you RootsChatters on the latest regarding James Prudhoe who was my Great Grandfather x3.
After some great and determined detective work from Mendoza they have been able to unite me with Jame' family bible which has been on an epic journey of both time and distance. I am eternally grateful to Mendoza for their persistence in both finding and getting the bible to me and Jame' direct descendants, it will now take its place in the family archive.
James died in Birdwan, India in 1857 and it seems that his estate was shipped back to London by the Foreign Office in 1858. The bible came into the possession of a friend of Mendoza about 50 years ago, they passed it on to Mendoza who in turn found me and completed the journey. Incedible !
Once again RootsChat comes up trumps by being the forum which facilitated the final link in the epic journey. Thank you.
