Just had an email from Genes Reunited - all their resources are free to view from 6PM - 8PM on New Years Eve. Not sure who is eligible, I have a basic paid membership only.
I hope they manage to cope with the rush!

This would probably be just for paid members, I didn't bother to renew my subscription, so am now a free member only and didn't get the e-mail you had.

Hi
I found that Genes Reunited plus the records including the 1911 census are free for 3 hours
on December 31st between 6pm -9pm. or has someone already posted this?
Good hunting & Happy New Year!

brilliant news, thanks for posting Glyn!
-
thanks very much for the heads up :D

Hi
I got it wrong, it is 6pm-8pm (not 9) but its free to anyone you just have to register.

Does anyone know does this mean you would be able to contact members during these 2 hours who share your ancestors?

Love the way they offer it as a " New Year's Eve party" - see you all there!
(As long as it's not so busy the site crashes or something ;D)
Will be busy in the days ahead making a priority list of 1911 census checks; which will keep me going until Ancestry start offering it "sometime in the New Year". Am hanging on by my fingernails...

Well, I'm having no luck so far! I have pretty fast broadband but still can't open the image!

Same here! >:(

Got some nice information from 1911, but now I think it has crashed!
-
What a con, it says they are doing maintenance work.
Glyn

It's back but super slow :o

Seems not to be the case :(

I just got the message that they're doing essential maintenance work. A con if you ask me >:(
-
20 mins to open one record and now it wont let me download. Not a happy bunny :(

Another unhappy bunny

Snap! ::)
-
I've been trying for nearly half an hour, and I can't get past the log-in screen. :(
Still, I haven't paid, so I haven't lost anything!
;) :D
-
Well, I wasn't planning on renewing my subscription anyway in Feb! It's nice of them to offer something for free, but don't do it unless you can cope with the extra traffic!
-
So have I, maintenance work, a con would be about right >:(
Happy New year to all at ROOTCHAT ;D

I eventually got to a listing page that bore little resemblance to my query. Place names were 'Morth Shileds' and 'Middlebough' !!
-
I managed to print out four records but I had already saved the search results to 'Favourites' the other day, I'm not getting anything now :(
-
I now have 2 1911 records that I was looking for but it's taken an hour

Amazing how often this happens when one of the sites offers something for free isnt it. Sites are always unavailable >:( >:( Makes you wonder how many people they think would try their sites out. ::) ::) Not very good advrtising for them is it ???
-
I am onto my sixth 1911 census record at the moment, taken an hour, it is painfully slow, but given it is free and email was sent to all members, no wonder the servers are overloaded. Patience is paying off though, have already made some small discoveries.. :)
-
Looks like the site may have gone down. I've got the message that they're doing essential maintenance.

What a shambles. If that's the best GR's IT dept can do, I'm sticking with Ancestry. For 2 hours I've been trying to access records and getting nowhere. They must have realised there would be a huge number of members trying to access the 1911 census. If they couldn't cope with extra demand they shouldn't have offered it. I stayed in near my computer instead of accepting New Year invitations, to no avail. I didn't manage to access one of my 17 prepared queries.

I tried to get on the site for 35 mins and then got message that maintenance work was being carried out. Tried again and it had crashed. Gave up after 4th attempt. Happy new year to you all xx

After reading the posts on here about the trouble with getting on to the GR site I thought that I would give it miss as too many people would be using it . However I did try it at 19.50, chucked my information in and bingo! straight to the correct entry. Only trouble that I had was that my printer decides that now is the moment to run out of paper and ink at the same time lol. However I have a blueish copy of it printed off plus my rushed notes from it which I can combine together and use. Tried my luck in getting another entry and the last I saw of it, it was still trying to load at 20.15 before I came off.

Eileen, you still have time to get out there and celebrate!
I got nothing, nowt, nix, nada! :(

Spent the first 45 mins tearing my hair out, along with the rest of you. I just knew it would be like this, but they obviously didn't.
However, stuck with it, and managed to get 13 records, but only because they extended it to 9pm. That was about half of what I'd sorted out previously in anticipation.
I suppose it's better than a poke in the eye with a blunt stick though ::)

I agree that perseverance paid off. I obtained and printed 12 x 1911 census records which gave me the details of all my grandparents and g-grandparents plus the gg grandparents who were still living, so not a bad return; system did speed up quite a bit after 8pm .
Now time to relax and enjoy ! A Happy New Year to all RootsChatters :-*
-
Despite the extra hour, I was unable to view or download anything.
Good luck to those who did, but I won't bother with GR in future.
:( ;) :)
-
Didn't know they'd extended it, that'll teach me to give up. :(
-
Well, sounds as if they didn't manage to cope with the rush! When will they ever learn!

I'm only a standard member and was thinking of upgrading when my other UK subscription ends.
I actually only wanted to test how efficient it was but at first kept getting the message Essential maintenance" matters and "please make your search details more specific", searches that Ancestry delivers in seconds.
Why they didn't open up for free for the whole afternoon, or day, is beyond me. The short period was doomed before it started.
I will not be subscribing, and will end my standard membership.
Their comments on the free 2 (3) hours should be interesting........ ;D
-
I have standard membership, but did not get any notification....and now I've missed it!! Bah!!
-
The only notification I had was from reading this thread!
It was neatly tucked away on the website under "Start your Family Tree Week - 26th December - 1st January". ;)
-
Didn't know they'd extended it, that'll teach me to give up. :(
Tenacious by name........ :D
However, my OH thought I was mad - until I told him how much it would've cost me to view them all on pay-per-view!
Happy New Year to all :)

Well done Mrs T!
I even made tea early so I could get on with it, having listed all the ones I was looking for on the 1911. Oh well, I'll just have to wait for the next freebie, it's too expensive otherwise!
I got my invitation by email, they say if something seems to be too good to be true, it usually is! :(
-
I left it trying to load while I had a meal, still trying to load when I had finished. Not to much of a problem, I can access the 1911 and ancestry free at the local library.
-
I must be pretty unique then!
I'm only a free non-paying memebr but I got well over twenty original screenshots downloded.
Yes, it DID crarsh two or three times, but I persevered and got what I needed (for the most part)
I also worked on the assumption that they would feel guilty about the 'maintenance work' and extend the two hours briefly, so I stuck at it. At 9:00 precisely it stopped dead and offered me the different subscription rates.
It did also speed up dramatically after 8:00 so I presume that the vast majority of folks gave up at that point, expecting it to be the cut-off.
S'pose I just got lucky!
MT ;)
