Post by: Prufrock on Thursday 30 December 10 18:06 GMT (UK)

I am searching for any relatives of of Liza (Eliza?) Free living in Croydon in the late 1800s, she was my Great Great Grandmother - does anyone know of her family?

Thank you.

Have you found her on a census, indicating her age and Place of Birth?

Not yet Mort29, although I do know for sure she was living in Croydon during the last qtr of the 19th C (as I have the birth certificate of her son, my GGrandfather).

Her married name was Foster.

Thanks.

This is the only post-1871 marriage with both surnames ( and Eliza is the forename of the Free)

Marriages Dec 1876

FOSTER  George    Mile End  1c 1058
FREE  Eliza      Mile End  1c 1058
Jones  Mary Ann     Mile End  1c 1058
NEWELL  William     Mile End  1c 1058

assuming that they were the right couple within the 4 names to marry, a look at 1881 census and later may find them in Croydon - providing the needed vital stats for Eliza.

What was the son's name and when was he born?

Hi,

I'll look up the date of the birth and get back to you.

She was married to Solomon Foster.

I'll double check details though.

Thanks.

There are 3 Solomon Fosters marrying in Croydon after 1850 up to late 1890s .... this must be yours ... I started the last search at 1871 for some reason ...

Marriages Mar 1863

FOSTER  Solomon    Croydon  2a 199
FREE  Eliza      Croydon  2a 199
THORNTON  Charles     Croydon  2a 199
THORNTON  Isabella     Croydon  2a 199

Thanks Mort29,

what would you suggest I do next to trace back on Free?

Oh, and what I do not know - are there are any other children; apart from my GGrandfather?

Regards.

now we have her PoB (see addition to previous post), we may find her easily in Cambs - otherwise you need to get that Marriage Certificate to see if she names a Father....

LOL, you still havent named your GGrandfather!

OK, the 1861 seems to match her PoB, allowing for a small mistran both by the Enumerator and the modern transcription.

1861 census of Dagenham, Essex RG9; Piece: 1069; Folio: 50; Page: 17

Charles Free 34 Head of Household born Cambs 'Harheath': an Ag Lab
Mary Ann Free 30 Wife Cambs, West?michter?
Eliza Free 16 dau Cambs, 'Horheath'
Agnes Free 14 dau ditto
Judith Holdle Free 4 dau ditto
George W Free 7 son Essex, Barking
Thomas Alfred Free 11Mo son Essex, Dagenham

Isaac Foster 26 Lodger born Essex, Hempstead

Look closely at the Foster Lodger - his PoB matches Solomon's in 1871 ! Mabe a relation?

Also, I'd wager this is a 2nd marriage for Charles given Mary Ann's age and the kids ages ...

In 1851 census of Horseheath, Cambridgeshire HO107; Piece: 1761; Folio: 353; Page: 22 - Eliza is a Visitor in the Household of John Free - I'm guessing that he is her Uncle ....

Back to the Fosters...... in 1881 - RG11; Piece: 816; Folio: 101; Page: 59 Croydon .... Eliza isnt there. This is the Family as shown on the Enumerators Page at 44, Warren Road.

Soloman Foster 37 Head of Household born Essex, Hempstead: a Coal Porter
Charles Foster 15 son born Croydon: a Carman
Soloman Foster 11 son ditto
William Foster 8 son ditto
Walter Foster 6 son ditto
Alfred Foster 3 son ditto
Sarah Foster 17 dau born Essex, Walthamstow
Eliza Foster 13 dau born Croydon
Florance Foster 9 dau ditto
Sarah Chote 27 NIECE born Sussex, Hampstead??

Age closely matches ...

Deaths Mar 1880

FOSTER  Eliza  36  Croydon  2a 168

Deaths Sep 1899

Foster  Solomon  age 56  Croydon  2a 147

leaving this as a memory jogger, as I havent been able to see him yet in the 1891 census.

Added: Think this is him - spelled Solimm or similar - Lodging in Ely Road, Croydon - RG12; Piece: 593; Folio 111; Page 55 'Licenced Lodging House'

age is shown 'NK', but amended to 35 !: PoB is 'NK' - occupation is General Labourer .... strangely shown as 'Married'

We could try and trace the younger kids if you like ?

Isaac Foster seen with the Free family in 1861, was indeed Solomon's brother ..

Thank you again,

it appears there is a change in the spelling of the name, or might this be an enumerator's error?

Regards.

Ely Road is interesting, and the younger kids would be too?

Happy New Year Mort29, and thanx.
