I wonder if anyone can help. I have searched hard for the birth but without success. I've looked on Scotlands People, and the IGI, and the other sites I know of.
He was born 1851 -1854 in Glasgow. His parents - George McCartney and Elizabeth Thomson Smith married in 1842 in Sorn.
On the 1851 census they are living in Commercial Rd, Gorbals, Glasgow - Hugh isn't on this one.
On the 1861 the family are at Sundyfauld Lane, Hutchesontown, Glasgow Govan. Hugh is 7, born Glasgow - 1854 birth.
On the 1871 he is living with his father and his father's new wife at Mathieson St, Hutchesontown, Glasgow Govan, born Glasgow, age 17 - 1854 birth.
In 1874 he married Barbara Pursell who also lived in Mathieson St, they married in 1874,Glasgow, he gave his age as 23, giving a birth year about 1851.
In 1881 the family are living in Salford, Lancashire. Gives his age as 30 - therefore born around 1851.
I can't find Hugh, Barbara and their family anywhere on the 1891, Barbara turns up on the 1901 as a widow in Salford. I can't find Hugh's death anywhere either!
Can anyone advise where I could find his birth, for instance, where in Glasgow he might have been baptised, as it's such a big city.
I'd be very grateful for any advice or help.
Thank you
Julie

As it was pre 1855 his baptism record may not exist.
Were they RC or CoS?
-
Thanks for your reply.
I don't know if they were CoS or RC, I would have to find which denomination the church his parents married in was.
I know civil registration started in Scotland in 1855, but are parish records sparse before then? ( I've not done much research for Scottish ancestors).

I have McCartney (Macartney/McArtney) ancestors from Glasgow pre-1855.
Roman Catholic all the way!

If you look at the birth entry of his brother William born 1861 Hutchesontown hopefully you will get the parents marriage info.

BTW it's Sandyfaulds Road in 1861 although I can see Ancestry says Sundyfaulds.
Later......................................Just noticed this is an old post so hopefully you will have all your info by now! :)

Hi,
Thanks very much for the help. I think I have it sorted out now, though his birth and death records are very elusive!!
Thank you

What was Hugh's occupation?
-
Hi Sancti,
He was a printer compositor, and assume died in Lancashire as he was on the 1881 there, and his wife was a widow there in 1901.
Many thanks

1881 census gives Hugh's place of birth as Ayrshire and there is an Irish connection with 2 of the children born in Cork
Maybe the family were back in Ireland for the 1891 census

Family lore is that he pinched some money from his employer and ran off to Ireland for a few years! Possibly, as you've suggested, he returned at some time around 1891.
I know it's not crucial to have his birth and death, as I do have his parents and siblings, but its nice to fill in these blanks isn't it?
