Some sites that may be helpful

Nova Scotia GenWeb Page
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~canns/

Historical Vital Statistics - You may find info on his parents and siblings on this site
www.novascotiagenealogy.com/

Nova Scotia Newspapers
The Bee (Pictou) 1835-1838
http://librariesns.ca/content/newspapers-digitization

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nspictou/

Also look at the Resources board for Canada as there may be more information. I would also look for books on families with the last name Cameron as that may give you more info. I do believe that I found a brother or father that died in 1866 as Janet was given as I think the mother's name. There are many Duncan Cameron's listed but if you narrow the family to a community in Pictou county you may have more luck. Also at that time Pictou County would have covered a much larger area than it does now. Also many Scot families used a naming pattern for the children so you will see the same names used over and over again by siblings. an example is the first son named for the father's father, the second son for the mother's father, the third son for the father, the fourth son for the father's oldest brother, etc. The same with daughters. The first daughter named for the father's mother, the second daughter for the mother's mother, the third daughter for the mother, etc. Hope this helps more than confuses with your search.

You can look through the cemeteries in which there are Camerons. I noted 2 Duncans on the Pictou 1817 but only heads of households listed and numbers and genders for others...
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nspictou/index.htm ( page 8 Marshdale is a couple without children)
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pictou/pict1.htm
I looked through earlier marriages in newspapers and nothing came up for the couple.

Have you perused our resource board?

1838 has a Duncan but no males over 14 in household ( so is this Duncan not in the house?) ...seems to be one under age 6 though  http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nspictou/index.htm look to left frame & scroll down to find the census...You can look through the 1871 in there to see if any clues remain

Are you still looking for Duncan and Jennie/Jane?  I believe their son Daniel went to Australia - he was in Broadford near Melbourne in 1880 - a licenced victualler.  I'm helping a descendant of their daughter Jessie track her family.  Duncan and Jennie lived at 'the Forks', East River Pictou County.

Hello destrask
Yep, still looking for info on this family.
You wrote a Daniel Cameron who was a licensed victualler in Broadford in 1880.
My Donald Cameron was such a person but in Seymour at about that time.
Can l ask where you found that info about Daniel.
As for Duncan and Jennie’s children l only really have Donald as their son.
As info for this family is hard to track down.
Would love to expand this family a bit further.

OK!  I tried to reply but not sure where it went - I've been trying to help someone in British Columbia [I'm in NS] who is a descendant of daughter Jessie and who is looking to find a United Empire Loyalist ancestor, so I've been trying to link Duncan to the UELs of the 84th who settled up the East River of Pictou.  The records of that area are pretty non-existent as you have likely discovered.
Here is what I have for their children:

Jessie, born c. 1824, married Hugh Fraser
Mary B., born c. 1825, married John Lank
William, born c. 1828, died 18 January 1845 age 16 - son of Duncan and Jennie Cameron - from his gravestone in Riverton
Daniel - no dates except that his father gave him and a brother Archibald land in 1844
and Daniel signed over his land to his mother Jane in 1870 when he was living in Broadford Australia, near Melbourne
I've found no info at all on Archibald - still have to have another go at the probate records.
Jennie died 27 Nov 1884, according to her fairly modern gravestone.
Tried to attach a photo, but maybe I should take the tutorial!

Thanks for the info. you’ve written.

Yes, it is hard to find info. on them.

Donald Chisholm Cameron was the 3rd husband of my ancestor Jane Davis/Barnes/Jones.
They were married for close to 30 years - and may have had 2/3 children together.
They owned land, blacksmiths, pubs/hotels etc from Broadford to Seymour in Victoria Australia.
Jane and Donald died in the 1890’s and are buried in Seymour Victoria Australia.

Daniel is still a mystery to me in Australia - do you have further info on him.
Are Daniel and Donald one in the same ?

Cheers
Jamison

I suspect that Daniel and Donald are the same person - I think that Duncan was the son of Alexander & wife Elizabeth Cameron, and that Alexander was possibly the son of Donald Cameron originally from Glen Urquhart Inverness Shire, Scotland.  This Donald and his brothers and sons and sons-in-law were pressed into the British army from their immigrant ship when they arrived at New York in 1775 - they joined the Loyal Highland Emigrants, which became the 84th Regt of Foot.  So the whole bunch of them were Loyalists.

Did your Donald leave any papers from the 1870s - family letters, family bible, anything nice like that?

Hi
Well, the Scots were an oppressed lot.
I had the impression that the clan were forced to do something against their will - so to speak.
I don’t have any personal documents from him etc...l wish l did but...
I have to dig out his time line but l think his first recorded time l have is - from the late 1850’s.
Also, opened a public house near Broadford in about 1860.
You’ve sparked my interest again.
Cheers

I looked again at the deed in which Daniel Cameron licenced victualler of township of Broadford, county of Dalhousie and colony of Victoria, signed over property in Pictou County NS to his mother Jane - this was recorded in Nova Scotia in January 1874, but he signed a document appointing his attorney in NS in October 1872.  This was witnessed by John Whittle and Verney Lovett Cameron [who is this?], and on this document Daniel is listed as a licenced publican.  Then John Whittle had his own credentials verified by the mayor of Melbourne, Orlando Fenwick.

Hello Deb

Thanks for the little tid-bit !!

I have just goggled Verney Lovett Cameron Snr and found him and his family living in St. Kilda - a part of Melbourne.

Found his family on Geni.com - take a look at that site and see if you can see a connection.

I have a question for you - Is it right to say that Daniel/Donald and Jessie are brother and sister ?

Cheers Jamison

Today I was in Halifax and stopped by the Archives to look up the court records for a property settlement in which Hugh Fraser and his wife Jessie seem to have brought suit against her mother and siblings for a division of property in 1865.  On the plan agreed upon, the others are noted simply as the heirs of Duncan Cameron, but the Judgement Book lists Jessie Cameron [I suspect this is a transcribing error and should read 'Jennie'], Mary Cameron, Angus Cameron, Daniel Cameron and John Cameron.  Don't know if Angus and John are other siblings of Daniel and Jessie or not.  Back down the rabbit hole!

Hello

So, l guess that Duncan Cameron (the father) died in the 1860’s and this caused much strife amongst the children with their mother etc...

Also, Donald in Australia is called Daniel in Canada - would like to find out when he left Canada for Australia. This is maybe the reason we can’t find him arriving in Australia as Donald. All official documents (also newspaper info.), l have of him in Australia, are as Donald NOT Daniel.

First concrete date in Australia is in 1858 (so far) was when he married Jane Jones (Barnes) but the marriage was illegal - as she was still married to Patrick Barnes. When he (PB) died in 1866 she married Donald for a second time and remained married until her death early 1890’s

I have to keep digging up info from wherever to narrow down his arrival time. In 1858 he would have been 31 years old.

Deb thanks for sharing the info with me - l will go through my files on him to find anything else that may help from my side.

Cheers Jamison

A problem arose with the UEL application and so this week I have dug out my files on this family, trying to help.  Of course there's new material always being added to internet sources!  I found a reference in the local New Glasgow paper, the Easter Chronicle, 27 Nov 1896 to the death in Mangalore "on the 22nd inst" of Donald Chisholm Cameron, age 69.  Did your Donald die in Australia?

Hello Deb,

A year later or years later on this site things still turn up.

We are looking at the same person for sure - Danial/Donald lived in all the places you have mentioned did all the jobs etc..you mentioned in previous postings.

My Donald Chisholm Cameron died 22 Sept. 1896 Mangalore.

How did you get on with the descendants of his sister...?

Cheers

WOW!  How fabulous is that!  I double-checked and it was not the Eastern Chronicle but rather the Pictou Advocate which noted his death.  Jennie was his sister, and she died 20 April 1888, age 64.  Their mother, Jennie Chisholm Cameron died 18 Nov 1884, age 85. Hope the attachment is there...

Hello Deb
It worked and thanks for attaching it - just a bit confused with the date of J Ch. Cameron’s death !
I’m not a direct descendant of Donald/Danial Cameron and there are no direct descendants.
He was married to my direct ancestor Jane Davis/Jones/Cameron they did have 2 children but died very young as there are no records of them found - still looking for them.
He was married to Jane for nearly 30 years and was a very well-respected step-father to her children from previous marriages.
Are there many descendants of his sister Jennie ? Where do they live ?
We should construct a timeline of Donald/Danial to put all info. together.

Verney Lovett Cameron was from  Weymouth, Dorset so likey not a relative, or at least not a close one..." he was employed for a considerable time in the suppression of the East African slave trade"
Perhaps the connection to Nova Scotia may have involved researching British Loyalist slaves in Nova Scotia & the move to Sierra Leone   Sounds as though they found gold and concentrated on that misson...  All Praise the Almighty dollar...  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verney_Lovett_Cameron  https://www.gutenberg.org/files/18506/18506-h/18506-h.htm

Here is Janet/Jennie on 2 censuses living with daughter Jessie.  If she was living with them it seems they could not have remained at odds.  It may have been the fault of the father, choosing favourites or Perhaps the fellows got the son's / male heirs crap / usual larger share of the pie so more had to be fought for?

Hello J.J
Thank you very much in posting the information on the family concerned.
It’s so nice to have more info. on the Cameron family after knowing very little about them for so long.
It’s nice to know that Donald/Duncan Cameron (son of Jessie) had family that remained in NS.
Life might have not been to kind to them with all having to bunk in with each other over time.
I lack the knowledge and understanding of how to research North American records.
But you have helped me to take more notice of how and where to look.
Again thank you for the info. and l will put it to good use.
Kindest regards
Jamison

Familysearch is a wonderful database. It is only as good as the volunteers who transcribe, though, as some are absolute aces...but a few are devil may care. Be careful as you will get many duplicates and also family trees which are often not entirely correct.  in this case there are duplicates galore.
Especially in the era being researched, where repetition of names can be very confusing, especially when fathers & sons are having children at exactly the same time, people are marrying cousins, and older widowers are marrying very young ladies who were thought to be caregiving parents for their existing children, but end up being vessels for another generation of children. Scottish naming may or may not apply as they are 2nd & 3rd generation Canadians...and without proper census taking being done prior to 1871...one's age seemingly more important that one's actual name.

Dear J.J.

Thanks for the tips - yes - l have had problems with names in the past and and...2nd and 3rd wives or husbands have also proved to be a stumbling block at times.

I have learnt to be careful with dates of birth and places of birth too.

I found a photo of Jessie and Hugh’s headstone in Riverton cemetery while poking around online.

Thanks again for the info.
