Title: Looking For TILLEY/TILLY

I am looking for the Tilley/Tilly Family that lived in Yatton/

In the 1841 census I can find

William - 46
Sarah - 38
Emma 11
William - 8
Ann - 6
Alfred - 4
Henry - 1

In 1851 I can find

William - 56
Sarah - 38
Emma 21
Ann - 16
Alfred - 14
Henry - 12
Ellen 8
George 2

Then nothing in 1961

They then appear in 1871 in Wales.

The person I am looking for is Emma, and her son Alfred Tilley born in 1858/9.

Emma married Richard Morris in 1869 in Wales, and Richard Morris appears as Alfred's father on Alfred's marriage certificate.

If anyone knows where they may be in 1861 I would be very grateful.

Alfred was born in Yatton, Somerset.

I cannot trace him in 1961 or 1971, but there is a Frewrick Tilley living with George in 1971, in Wales that could be him. But he is named as a servant, which is an odd way to describe a nephew.

I now have Alfred's birth certificate for 1857 which shows their residence at the time as the Long Ashton Union Workhouse.

Are there any records anywhere of entry and exit to the workhouse so I can find out how long they lived there?

Hi,

Emma may well have gone there to have her baby and then left soon afterwards.

You can see the Workhouse admissions and departures at the Bristol Record Office.  Record offices usually have a lot of information on the workhouses of the district.

If the boy stayed there a long time he may have  been indentured to a master and those records are very informative, but he would have to have been about 14.

There is a good site for Workhouse information at www.workhouses.org.uk.
