I hope I am in the right place to ask this question. I am wondering if anyone has access to birth records for Kingston. I am looking for an Edmund Galley born c1798-1812. He was quite famous as the convict who received compensation and a royal pardon 44 years after he was transported to Australia. At his trial in Devon 1836 he said he was 26 and born Kingston. When he received his pardon in 1879 he was 80, so I don't know his DOB.
Any help appreciated.

Hi Judy,
Hope some of these entries might help confirm that Edmund Galley was born about 1812 rather than between about 1798 and 1812. It is useful to establish this because some baptisms can be "late baptisms" where the person being baptised was not of infant age.
Establishing the year of birth:
Home Office: Convict Prison Hulks: Registers and Letter Books, collection dated 1802-1849
Edmund Galley (who may have been misindexed as Gully), was shown to be aged 24, which would have meant he was born about 1812. His date of conviction was shown as 23 Jul 1836 and the place of his conviction was Exeter.
Date Received was 10 Sep 1836 and the Ship was the Ganymede, which was moored at Woolwich and Devonport
Australian Convict Index, collection for years 1788-1868
showed Edmund Galley was aged 26 in the year 1839 and his birthplace was entered as Kingston Upon Thames, and his occupation was Brickmaker.
The state he was sent to was Nsw and the ship was the Parkfield.
The approximate year of birth being about 1812 also tallies in with his entry in England and Wales Criminal Registers for years 1791 to 1892, as does his trial date and location.
Re a conditional pardon
NSW State Archives
New South Wales, Australia,Convict Registers of Conditional and Absolute Pardons 1791-1867
The entry for Edmund Galley shows a Conditional Pardon date of 1849
Vessel Name: Parkfield
Pardon Number: 273

Abigale's approx year of birth:
From Pilot IGI: Abigale Galley, the wife of William Galley, was buried on 28 May 1823 in Kingston-Upon-Thames, Surrey. She was aged 38 when she died, so she was born around 1784 to 1785.

IGI extracted record.
Edmund Galley ch. 8.12. 1811 Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey
Father William Mother Abigail
Just checked Pilot IGI and it adds Edmund's birthdate as 15 Nov 1811.
There is also via Pilot IGI another baptism for a female child of a William and Abigail Galley, that being of a daughter "Etherel" but in Speldhurst, in Kent, on 13 January 1805.
-
Most probably William and Abigail's marriage: :)
From the latest version of the IGI:
William Gally married Abigail Stone on 13 Sep 1803 in the parish of Marden, Kent, England
-
Possible baptism for Abigail - from latest version of IGI.
27 Jun 1784 in parish of Cowden, Kent, England, parents David Stone and Mary.

Hi
William Galley buried All Saints Kingston upon Thames 14th March 1821 aged 50 (if the correct man Abigail would be a widow on her burial 2 years later)
Baptism same church 28th October 1770
William Galley parents Robert and Elizabeth
There are several Galley Prerogative Court of Canterbury wills for Kingston including one for a Robert, though none of these may be directly related to William. Occupations for the men are given are malster, coal merchant and barge master. William's occupation on his later children's baptisms (last child baptised 11th February 1821 born 18th January and buried 17th June 1821 aged 5 months) was a labourer.
If both his parents died when Edmund was this young no wonder his subsequent early life was tough

Checked a scan of the original burial register for Kingston upon Thames, in 1823, and on page 163, and entry no 1306 in the register it shows Abigale, widow of William Galley, abode Kingston, buried 28th May aged 38, ceremony performed by BB Golding. Abigale didnt have a surname added to the index so have added it.

From scans of the original register; Burials of Robert Galley's at All Saints in the parish of Kingston Upon Thames (not necessarily a comprehensive listing):
Burial date 13 Jan 1815: Robert Galley, aged 84 so born abt 1730/1731 (occupations not recorded)
Burial date 22 April 1820: Robert Galley, aged 26 so born abt 1793/1794 occupation Malster (if the Pilot IGI matching record is correct this Robert was also connected to Hampton Wick).
Burial date 14 Sep 1818: Robert Francis Galley aged 7 weeks so born in 1818, son of Richard Galley
-
Possibly for the Elizabeth, the possible mother of William Galley, and widow of Robert:
Burial of an Elizabeth Galley at All Saints in the parish of Kingston Upon Thames:-
Burial date 14 Oct 1845: Elizabeth Galley, abode Hampton Wick, aged 74 so born abt 1770/1771. (Marital statuses not listed)
Most probably goes with the following 1841 entry:
From the 1841 census return for Wick Lane, in Hampton Wick in civil parish of Hampton, in the hundred of Spelthorne, in the county of Middlesex, registration district of Kingston, sub reg district Hampton
Elizabeth Gallay aged 65, occupation Independent, not born in county [Galley]
Sarah Bamford aged 35, occupation Independent, not born in county
(In the 1841 census ages of adults were rounded either up or down to the nearest unit of 5)
-
From the National Archives Documents Online - Wills:
Will of Elizabeth Galley, Widow of Hampton Wick, Middlesex 17 March 1846 PROB 11/2032
If this Elizabeth was William Galley's mother, and Edmund's grandmother, and if it was correct that she was the surviving partner of the marriage, then the above referenced will might be worth downloading.
The problem with the wills is that you cannot prove or refute any relationships until you have sight of them.

From Pilot IGI:
Children of couples called Robert Galley and Elizabeth, christened at Kingston upon Thames, Surrey
First lot:
Mary christened 8 Feb 1761
Edmund christened 31 July 1765
Margaret christened 4 May 1768
William christened 28 Oct 1770 [probable father of Edmund]
Then from a separate couple presumably, also called Robert and Elizabeth
Robert born 18 Feb 1794 christened 19 March 1794
Elizabeth born 3 April 1795 christened 22 April 1795
Sarah Jane born 31 July 1797, christened 23 August 1797

So far...

OK... now I've mapped the tree I can see I made a fundamental error in suspecting the Elizabeth living in Hampton Wick in 1841 was Robert's wife and mother of William. So please also ignore the earlier suggestion about Elizabeth's will possibly being of use.
Will now upload an amended version ::)

Sadly, I cannot find any UK/US/Canadian census returns for Edmund's brothers; Joseph and Charles, nor any burial or emigration records, but I did find a marriage for his sister Abigail:
Abigail Galley, spinster of Leatherhead, of full age,
Thomas Mansell, bachelor of full age, labourer, of Leatherhead
Married on 10 Oct 1841 after banns at the parish church of St Mary and St Nicholas, Leatherhead [in the county of Surrey]
Both their fathers names were William and both fathers occupations were indicated as Labourers
Thomas and Abigail made their marks on the register
Witnesses Maria Goff and William Brown

All Saints church, Kingston upon Thames, baptisms for children born to Thomas Mansell and Abigail Mansell:
Abigail Mary Mansell 15 Oct 1843
Jane Mansell 8 Feb 1846
Thomas Mansell 16 Jul 1848
Charles Mansell 23 Mar 1851
Edward Mansell 26 Sep 1853
Louisa Mansell 19 Aug 1855
Sarah Mansell 7 Feb 1858
Deaths: Abigail Mansell, registered in 1862 in Kingston, in county of Middlesex/Surrey Volume 2a, Page 132 (This death would appear to match Abigail Galley as opposed to her daughter Abigail who seemed to live on and possibly marry in the 1870's).
HappyFeet,
I hope that Abigail had found happiness in her marriage. I could not find her anywhere in 1861. What an awful outcome for these two siblings; Edmund and his sister Abigail. Do you know what happened to Edmund in Australia? - apart from him being awarded £1,000 compensation from the British parliament.
I dont know whether you have access to UK records, but I've done my best to find some more positive findings for you regarding Edmund's siblings, but don't feel as I have managed to find any. :'(
Please let us know if you still need help, and I hope others will also check for the siblings too in case I missed anything and continue to add advice / ideas that I may have missed.

Wow, thank you to everyone who has helped me with this. You are right, I have been busy, been away off and on, but should have noticed all this sooner.
Edmund was one of the lucky ones in Australia, as he was assigned to a caring master and he stayed on the one property, (which was out in the sticks, as we say) for most of his life. It was a sheep station and he was a shepherd. He always claimed he was innocent and just before he died he did get justice but did not live very long to enjoy it.
In August 1881 the newspapers of the day were still reporting that Edmund wanted the compensation in cash and that the government were still deciding whether to give him land or cash.
He did end up with Land, 320 acres of it, not far from the property he worked on - but whether he bought it or it was bought for him I don't know. Edmund Galley died 6.11.1885 - I haven't been able to find a death certificate for him as yet, so don't know what happened to him, only probate records showing his date of death. His widow died 2 years later.
Thanks again to you all.

Hello, I have recently started a One-name-study for the name of Galley and have been looking at convicts transported for their crimes.. Edmund is a cause celebre and I've been in touch with a few people about him. I have now produced a summary of him if you are interested and also know quite a lot about his brother Charles.
What is your connection with the Galleys? Are you interested in the study? If so please get in touch. Meg Galley-Taylor
