Title: BARRACKS AT MARYLEBONE 1846

I have an ancestor William Douglass who is listed on his marriage cert in 1846 as being a soldier living in Marylebone,London. Were there any Barracks in that area and any idea of what regiment he could have been in. He was born in Whitby in 1820. I cannot find him on the 1841 census,but by 1851 he was not in the military. Portman Street Barracks was in Marylebone, and St John's Wood Barracks is nearby. In fact there were probably 10-12 barracks within walking distance. His record does not appear to have survived which would make it a lot easier. If he was in the infantry it would probably have been one of the three Guard regiments. But there were also cavalry regiments, Royal Artillery etc, all serving in London.

would there be any census returns for the barracks in 1841? and when you say his records did not survive, which record are you referring to?

I dont see why the barracks should not included in the census. You will need help from the London section I suspect.

Findmypast have put all of the NAtional Archive's records online. There is an index for men disharged before 1854 on their Catalogue. He is not listed. If you really like clutching at straws you can pay a £20-30 donation to each of the three Guards museums. They have kept more records than the NA/FindMyPast. But as I said in my first post, there were other regiments in London.
