Well, we'll have to wait for an answer from my contact.
Hopefully she'll know - she's into the area's local history.
Of course she may be away for Christmas.
I'll let you know, when she replies.
I put "Omrah Coorparoo" into a search engine and got our conversation!!

Hi,
A couple of tid bits .. some pics of Coorparoo in the following link, > Cooparoo (http://onesearch.slq.qld.gov.au/primo_library/libweb/action/search.do?ct=Previous+Page&pag=prv&dscnt=0&fctN=facet_domain&submit2=%20Go%20&fctV=Picture%20Queensland&tab=default_tab&dstmp=1293610488341&ct=Previous%20Page&mode=Basic&indx=11&vl%28freeText0%29=Coorparoo&vid=SLQ&fn=search)
page 2 has a pic of Dawn Gibson and Gill children (looks early twenties though).
Most houses seem to have a 'name'.
From a much later date..
The Courier-Mail, Saturday 6 January 1940.

Find Mr and Mrs H W Atkinson @ 1940 and you should find 'Omrah'

Interesting, the bit via TROVE, but these days people use numbers instead of names.
Must have been a fair sized house to have the wedding reception there, but there are a few big houses on OCR (Old Cleveland Road) even now - its house numbers go nearly to 2000, it's at least 10k long though of course not all Coorparoo, but that part would be a few km at least.
My friend hasn't answered yet - must have gone away for Christmas. I'll be surprised if she doesn't know - Coorparoo house history is one of her hobbies.

My point being if the Atkinsons can be found on an electoral roll or other directory, then perhaps a street or lot number will be discovered.

The name of the house may be a clue. Perhaps those who named the house migrated on the ship by that name.
"Omrah" is the name of a passenger ship (the Orient Line) that sailed between UK and OZ from 1899 then became a troop carrier for WW1. Google the name. Here is one site there are others.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Omrah
Perhaps there a passenger list for this ship that may be helpful.
Best wishes, Gazania

Yes Mr Wilson I had that thought too, but I don't have access to 1940 ER. the QFHS Inc. has indexed the 1949 ER for Qld. but I can't get to look at that for a few weeks. Hopefully my other contact will come good ere then.
Dawn M
PS Hey, if you really are a Mr Wilson, we might be related! :D

There's a chance someone with ER access will come along soon. :)
Of course I'm a Wilson.... ;D

Ah well
My Wilson line (Mum's maiden name) is from Leicester, but that's all I know.
Can't even find out when my Robert Wilson arrived in Australia, or when/where he died.

My families Brisbane ER addresses around that era mostly only give the street name, occassionally a house name, and a few as vague as "near the railway station" :-\ ... and only one gives a street number ...
-
I just had a thought - I wonder if the Qld State Archives holds any records which may help you trace this house?

Hi,
Try the Brisbane City Council Archives.

Hi again Ozjobri et al
I just g***gled "Omrah Coorparoo" and got on to a site in FamilyTreeMaker.genealogy.com called 'Descendants of John Daly' - it says: his daughter Margaret married Thomas Martin O'Dea 1917 in Coorparoo (St.James RC). "Tom travelled the world 7 times as a merchant seaman. At the beginning of 1916, he brought out his mother, 2 sisters and brother, and his fiancee from Ireland. He bought a house for his mother at 120 Old Cleveland Road, Stones Corner."
It doesn't say this was "Omrah". Stones Corner is the next suburb to Coorparoo, towards town.
Don't know if that's any help!

Thank you everyone for your info. Dawn -all I know is abt George Gibson .Do you get the "feeling" it was some sort of lodging house ??
I will wait with anticipation for your friend to return .

Was my thought too. Seems there's too many bodies to be discovered at 'Omrah' for it to be an everyday home.

Hi Ozjobri et al
Well, my Coorparoo historian doesn't know "Omrah" ! I was surprised.
However, she tells me that 120 Old Cleveland Road, Stones Corner, was "a Workers Dwelling for Thomas O'Dea and then widow Brigit O'Dea, probably built in 1914-15. The mortgage release (MR) was 10 Oct 1924."
It was built 1914, and a site visit 1996 describes it as "in a row of small pyramid/short ridge roof cottages ....with green timber louvres on verandah"
So I doubt that it would have been "Omrah"
The search continues

Hi all
The QFHS Inc. has indexed the 1949 Electoral Roll. I'm told that on that roll:
There is a Henry William McCready ATKINSON, architect, 243 Old Cleveland Road, Coorparoo.
I'll try to go by there at the weekend and see if it still exists.

I refer to an earlier post re an Atkinson family having a wedding reception there. This family was headed by a well known architect, Henry Wallace Aitkinson, who appeared to live in Cavendish road, Cooparoo Their son, Capt James Victor Aitkinson on enlisting in WW1, said he was born Cooparoo & also gave Cavendish Road, Cooparoo, as his father's address. James was KIA in France in 1918 and his father's address was given as "Martha Villi" Cavendish Road, Cooparoo.
So "Omrah" may not have been so much a private home as a lodging house which could hold wedding receptions at some stage. I understand Cavendish Road is off Old Cleveland Road.
Just read the post re Wm Mc Cready Atkinson. I think he is the son of Henry Wallace and brother of Capt James - from memory.

The item in TROVE says the wedding party repaired to the bride's parents' home, "Omrah" at Cooparoo. The bride was apparently some well-known golfer, daughter of the Atkinsons.
Cavendish Road and Old Cleveland Road intersect at what would be considered the main intersection in Coorparoo, They are both long roads.
As Henry William McCready Atkinson was an architect, he almost certainly is connected with the H W Atkinson mentioned in the 1940 newspaper report, also an architect (Gazania's post)

Atkinson Snr, the champion Qld cyclist in 1887, was the more famous architect, he died in 1938. His son took his place in the firms partnership of Messrs. Atkinson and Conrad.
Coorparoo was a rapidly growing area in the first decades of the 20th century, I imagine 'Omrah' saw a number tenants pass through. I did find a reference to the Atkinsons living in Cavendish road in 1942. Obviously they moved, as people do. Earlier electoral rolls may shed some light.
On Google St view , 243 Old Cleveland Road, Coorparoo, looks to be a block of 8 units.
Was 'Old Cleveland Rd' called that in @ 1915? It was :-[
-
I don't think they moved, except when HWMcR Atkinson moved out of home ;)
Henry Wallace Atkinson (the 'snr' architect of the family) lived in Cav Road at Martha Ville, and died in 1938 according to my local historian friend.
Henry William McReady Atkinson (the 'jnr' architect of the family) lived in OCR at #243 in 1949, on the 1949 electoral roll.
They were probably just around the corner from each other.

Hello
I finally got to go along Old Cleveland Road at Coorparoo, last Saturday. Mr Wilson was right, 243 would be now a block of flats/units, on a corner. Didn't see a number, but 247 was the property on the eastern corner of the side street (forgot to look at its name), and MacDonalds next door on the western (town) side is #235. These are on the southern side of the street.
So, Ozjobri, "Omrah" apparently no longer exists.
