Hi there,
sorry it is not a lovely photo, but can any one make this death cert, readable.
many thanks
Image Removed. Only a small portion of a certificate may be posted for help with handwriting.

I tried PhotoZoom Pro on it, and got this, but it's not much better.
Best wishes, Jon

Hi Rados,
It's not really possible to make a blurry document readable :-\ You will most probably have to try to get a better copy of the original - was this scanned or photographed?
Cheers

Here's a small piece to see if it's any better. As PrueM says, it's not really possible to make it legible.

Hi Jon :)
I've tried to transcribe it but I can't read half of it :-\
Here's my attempt, anyway:
Twenty fifth of ?October ?1881, Stratford
Martha …
Female
?26 years (could be 36 or even 86!)
Wife of ….
….
….., Husband of the deceased, … ?White Lane, Stratford
Twenty-seventh of October, ?1881
Cheers

Hi Prue,
I've tried to add to your excellent transcription, but I can't read half of it either (might be a different half, though :)
Here're my additions, anyway, from a quoted version of your:
Twenty fifth of ?October ?1881, Stratford
Martha ?Brooks
Female
?26 years (could be 36 or even 86!)
Wife of ?Edward ?Brooks ?Esquire
?Howard ?Brooks ?Esquire, Husband of the deceased, … ?White Lane, Stratford
Twenty-seventh of October, ?1881
Best wishes, Jon

Hi Pru,
cheers for having alook, and to all that have.
the original is very poor and I had to use the zoom to read parts of it myself.
It is Original
-
If the DC is from the GRO you could try ordering another copy from the Local register office which should be more legible.

Wife of XX XX LYON

The column headings are probably.
Date and place of death. Name and surname. sex. Maiden surname of a woman who has married. date and place of birth.
Occupation and usual address. 7(a) Name and surname of informant 7(b) Qualification 7(c) address of informant.
9. cause of death.
Those column headings are those currently used on todays death certs.
-
jjoojj, can you give us the column headings off the certificate you are reading from please.
-
I read the surname as LYON
Can you please tell us how you obtained this cert? and what is the registration district and county?
-
Could it be Stafford?
-
Dear All,
here's what I think they say:
No.
1. When and where born
2. Name and Surname
3. Sex
4. Age
5. Occupation
6. Cause of Death
7. Signature, description and address of informant
8. ?Where eng[...]?
9. ?Witness of ?signature
Does that make any sense?
Best, Jon
-
And could the name be Howard Brooks Lyons/Hyons

I have a recent death cert in front of me, so admittedly the order of the columns may have changed over 100 years.
But if it is a death cert then the first date is likely to be the date and place of death IMO
-
Col 5 could be "wife of xxx xxx Lyon" but what I see as LYON could be the occupationof the husband.
If you read the last word as an occupation, what could it be?
-
Yes indeed, ScouseBoy, it's much more like
When and where *died*.
Sorry about that.
Jon
-
Jjoojj.
have you ever been on www.findmypast.co.uk
or freeBMD on the internet.
try the name and date of death on that site and see if that helps.
-
Dear All,
ScouseBoy: Thanks. I tried as you suggested FreeBMD, but it didn't give me anything.
Rados: Does any of this tally with other information you have?
Best wishes to you all, and merry Christmas!

Yes - Rados, where did you get the cert from? Can it be scanned again to make it clearer? Do you know the name of the deceased, at least?
I agree with others that what looks like "Lyon" is actually the occupation of the husband. I can't read it though :-\

Strangely, I see "Dyson" rather than "Lyon/s" ... there appears to be another letter after the "y" ... ?

Could the occupation therefore be DYER which fits with Lancashire and cotton.
-
From what I remember, before the cert was butchered, the death was registered in the Belper district of Derbyshire.
-
Martha Brooks/Dec.1841/Belper/19/293.
1841:
no.1 Well Lane.Milford.Derbys.
Edward Brooks/40/Dyer..well done Scouseboy
Martha/30
Patience/10
John/8
Hannah/6
Mary/1
In 1841 ages were rounded down to the nearest five for over 15's

Milford is the only parish in Belper district ending -ford.

cause of death?
-
Dear All,
I can see I have lots to learn from you guys :)
Have a great time!
Best wishes, Jon
-
Inspector Morse has got a lot to learn from us guys. ::)
-
Did we need to try and decipher cause of death?
It looks like Respitory, but that is just a wild guess, really.
-
Looks like rupture to me.
-
cause of death?
Cause of death was a rupture :'(
-
I doubt it's Rupture. :-\
1. It's not a medical term;
2. It's surely not (in itself) fatal, it could only be a contributory cause;
3. It wasn't a sudden death as the Coroner wasn't involved.
-
Hi Geoff - my certificate copy definitely states Rupture as the cause of death. I too was surprised for the very reasons you list. My wife (a nurse) assures me though that it can be a cause of death - very rare these days but she thinks without treatment it would have been more likely back then - although we're happy be to be proved wrong. I've put a pdf at http://www.brooksfamily.name/getperson.php?personID=I1988&tree=1 which if you zoom in is fairly clear (I hope :-\ )
Regards
Keith

Yes, I agree, it says Rupture ... I wonder what she died of. :-\
