Title: Surname CASSENCE
Post by: nedster on Tuesday 21 December 10 11:39 GMT (UK)
I hope someone can assist in this problem.

I have found that Mary Ann Silversides married a James Cassence in Jul 12 1858, Bethnal Green.

The name has been transcribed as cassence, but i cant seen to go back through the census or even forward by searching the name, they did have two children James Henry born 1858 and George 1862, which have also benn transcribed as cassence.

Has any body came across the name before, or any ideas what it could be?

Thank You

There are no birth registrations for James Henry 1858 or George 1862 under Cassence

Where is it you have seen the children?

Hi,

Thanks for the quick response, i did find both baptism records for the children on Ancestory, the problem i have is i cant find any of the family in future census records, i have no knowledge of who James Cassence parents were, only his father from the marriage certificate, which i also found on Ancestory. i have looked at the certificate many times, and i  am not convinced its Cassence, i think its been transcribed wrongly. If you look closley it could be Calfence, but thats not given me any census records.

Thanks again for your efforts in my plight.

Have you tried on ancestry just putting in child's name and parents, date of birth plus or minus 2 years, born London and see what it comes up with

Well it looks as if there is a mixture of surnames IF they all belong to your James and Mary Ann

George CASSENCES
bapt St Mary Stepney 20/04/1862
born 07/02/1862
address looks like 2 Whitehorte Place or Whitchorte Place

The bapt for 1864  is for Henry James transcribed as Cassenchs
There is also a William Cassence birth reg Dec qtr 1868  St.George in the East free BDM

There is a private tree on A.... researching your Cassence family.

I have searched just by putting in parents names on 1861 but nothing comes up, I am intrigued, LM

I guess the east end dialect got lost in translation when the marriage took place, of the vicar was a bit tipsy,
Looking at the grooms signature it makes me think its Cafence, it certainly does not look like a double S.

If as you say you haven't found them on a census how did you find out who they were

Wasn't double S spelt as an FS, or am I imagining it

Hi,

Mary Siversides was the sister of my gg grandmother so i knew she exsisted, when i searched on ancestory for any records relating to her, i came across her marriage certificate to James Cassence, and the baptism records for the two children, then i hit the brick wall as no census records seem to exsist after the wedding, or any records for James before he got married.

Am happy to scan the certicate to you as i think it would make sense as to what i am trying to explain about the wording on the  certificate.

Once again many thanks for your time and effort.

I have looked at similar names with double S and they are shown as FS, intriguing though isn't it
